Why do people refer to pants as a "pair" of pants?  It's one article of clothing.

What else don't make no sense?

Because a "pantaloon" is one leg of "pantaloons," and "pants" is an abbreviation of "pantaloons."

So really, "pants" is plural of "pant," of which pants have two - a left pant and a right pant.
