Gofundme has a $1B limit. I have my doubts it will ever be obtained. That isn't what the politicians are looking at, however. They are focusing on how many people are donating. A donation is a "vote" for wall funding.  As of now, 235K people (in 5 days, with little publicity) have decided to express their support for the wall via a direct donation.

As far as where the fund are going... there is a precedent for direct funds being directed toward a specific purpose, and that money being used for that purpose (David Rubenstein and the Washington Monument elevator is the latest example (2016)). The claim here is they are working with the administration (and attorneys) to get the money to be used directly for a  wall.

*******

Yup, building the wall is a real conspiracy movement. / insert sarc tag

$1K.

thank you for the info.

So let's take a rough guess of US citizens over 18 being at 250M people. so we have 1/10th of 1 % of people donating...not exactly a large number, certainly not a mandate of any kind.

Partial government shutdown triggered as funding lapses amid border wall dispute
by Alex Pappas

Original Article

Funding for a slew of federal agencies lapsed at midnight after Congress and the White House failed to pass a spending package amid a bruising fight over border wall funding. The missed deadline means nine of 15 Cabinet-level departments and dozens of agencies will close just as the Christmas break begins.

But it does not mean the whole federal government is affected: Only about a quarter of the government is actually shutting down.

The Senate planned to reconvene at noon Saturday to continue talks

That's being a good sport!  What was your friend going to have to buy? (I'm almost afraid to ask.)

Well, he was going to have to buy drinks for the first 2 hours at the bar without have a single sip. And yes, that would be pure torture for him!

It’s the projection factor. Think of how polls work. Having said that I don’t believe 250k is a significant enough sample to project. It’s enough to take notice early on and if it snowballs....

With negotiations expected to continue, the House and Senate both scheduled rare Saturday sessions. House members were told they’d get 24 hours’ notice before a vote.

The gridlock blocks money for nine of 15 Cabinet-level departments and dozens of agencies, including the departments of Homeland Security, Transportation, Interior, Agriculture, State and Justice.

The lack of funds will disrupt many government operations and the routines of 800,000 federal employees. Roughly 420,000 workers were deemed essential and will work unpaid just days before Christmas, while 380,000 will be furloughed, meaning they’ll stay home without pay.

Those being furloughed include nearly everyone at NASA and 52,000 workers at the Internal Revenue Service. About 8 in 10 employees of the National Park Service will stay home and many parks were expected to close.

The Senate passed legislation ensuring workers will receive back pay, which the House seemed sure to approve.

Some agencies, including the Pentagon and the departments of Veterans Affairs and Health and Human Services, were already funded for the year in agreements reached earlier, and they will operate as usual.

The U.S. Postal Service, busy delivering packages for the holiday season, will not be affected because it’s an independent agency. Social Security checks will still be mailed, troops will remain on duty and food inspections will continue.

Also still functioning will be the FBI, the Border Patrol and the Coast Guard. Transportation Security Administration officers will continue to staff airport checkpoints and air traffic controllers will also remain at work.

It was Trump's shutdown, as he said, if Congress would not address the budget with the wall spending in it, BUT, the House DID pass it..........much to Nancy's dismay,

Now the Senate HAS enough votes to pass it (over 50) but without some democrats to reach the 'artificial' end-debate 60

it can't be passed

Guess who is holding those votes hostage ?

Chuck Schumer closed the government b/c he would not allow $5 billion of the $4 trillion the federal govt spends annually to be spent on border barriers. It’s an absurd, political stunt....................... By Chuck Schumer..................... It is his shutdown.

Bottom line: Chuck Schumer is closing the government and creating genuine hardship for hundreds of thousands of federal employees b/c he’s afraid of his “base” which wants zero border security funding. It’s all on ,Chuck Schumer  period.

Wait a minute.....................I didn't know the nation, and it's children, would face THIS hardship.....

We’re sorry, but we will not be posting updates to our social media channels during the government shutdown. Also, all National Archives facilities are closed and activities are canceled until further notice. We’ll be back as soon as possible!

When Trump announced he was running for president people believed his chances of getting elected were somewhere around zero as well.

But...you mean...if the president is impeached, the other party doesn't get to take over everything?

Not actually true.  It was a border security bill that included $8 Billion for 700 miles of fencing.

Which is interesting, because...$5B for a thousand-mile wall, but $8B for a shorter fence?  Shroomer may be a partisan asshat, but this would be one of his "stopped clock" moments, because this wall bull ***** is, in fact, bull *****.

Schumer provided some very interesting soundbites about the border wall. No wall for Trump, no money for trump wall, you'll never get funding for the trump wall etc etc etc.

The problem is people are dying over this issue, and many, many folks support the building of a wall, more still support security at the border in some way, shape or form.  Yet old chuck sounded like an arrogant politician playing games with money at the expense of the security of the American people, not to mention those in govt impacted over the $5b. Nothing like a NYC lib on a rant to rally middle Americans at election time.

Don't remember where I read it but the 5b was for 200+ miles with the 25b intended for 1200 miles.
