That's why, to those who didn't vote for him/weren't inspired by any of the candidates in 2016, it was strange to see the media/entertainment industry go from -- "We love Trump" (1980-2014) to "HE'S HITLER AND STALIN ROLLED INTO ONE!"

He's a lot of things, some of them objectionable, but he's not Hitler or a monster. But the media/DNC couldn't help themselves and had to start the conversation/protest at 11, which left them no place to go. Now that we're nearly three years in, most of the independents/non partisan die hards are bored/tired of the extreme claims and ignore it. That's going to make 2020 a tougher slog for the DNC than it  otherwise would have been had they just not been crazy.

Instead, they went full crazy -- launching histrionic attack after attack, backdoor coup attempts, all while railing that anyone who dares support Trump is by extension a Hitler/Monster/Racist too.

Losing strategy all around.

It's not about her citizenship -- but her brother's/husband's.

Trump is going to keep using it because he doesn't see it as racist or xenophobic. He sees it as an issue of loyalty (which is his primary filter) and as a way to tie the party to their most extreme members. He's going to keep counter punching, it's what he does.

Ahh, so he is the one who gained citizenship ..see I am an idiot!!! Should that not be easy to confirm, at least the part on him gaining citizenship/ visa etc? Maybe not whether her brother or not, I get that may be hard to conclude one way or tother

And that saddens the hell out me..and i don't buy he does not see it that way, i think he just does not care..sad where we have slid

I haven't dug into this issue at all on my own to know one way or the other about it's legitimacy -- though I have been told getting records from Somalia (or any war torn nation) is next to impossible, which I would assume would make proving it one way or the other difficult.

Trump sees everything through the lens of loyalty. It's easy enough to see in practice -- before he was POTUS and during. He's not a racist imo, he's just an extreme narcissist who demands loyalty above all else to "Trump" while in business, and to "America" while in office.

Unfortunately, to minorities, and immigrants, and people who have those in their families,  this isn't some political brinkmanship.  Whatever his true motivations are (as somebody who has been very aware of Donald Trump since the 80's and a New Yorker, I think he has always been a racist p.o.s.... sitting back and waiting isn't a luxury that all Americans have, so yeah, they might get a little emotional), he isn't smart enough, or isn't caring enough to temper those doubts about him.  Remember that "president for all Americans" bs?

We're going to disagree on this point, but the left has always jumped on Republicans. Always. They wrecked Sarah Palin, Mitt Romney, etc. with horrible, childish, embarrassing tactics. Lies so disgusting, most people simply couldn't stomach the fight any longer.

What you're seeing here is a person who has decided to push back, and a country that has been waiting for someone to do so.

Trump is too much of an ego to admit it, but I believe he saw the window to have a winning fight after watching Newt Gingrich jump on the moderator for starting the debate asking about his infidelity. Here.

From that article:

Quote

If the opening moments of Thursday night’s CNN debate is any indication, bashing the mainstream news media over alleged biases is a surefire way to rouse the GOP faithful.

That effort never got traction with Gingrich because he's not a likable candidate.

Trump threw gas on it.

I agree, there is a large amount of stupidity on both sides of the aisle...but we have a leader, our elected president, who does absolutely nothing to discourage it. Whenever he makes even the faintest comment scolding this type of behavior, you can bet, like clockwork, within 24 hours he will send out a conflicting message, as if to say, "don't worry white America, I got your back"...

Barack Obama told his faithful to 'punch back twice as hard." Nancy Pelosi walked through the Tea Party crowd arm-in-arm with black congressman so they could falsely claim someone spit on them, or lying that the people who were against Obamacare carry swastikas to town hall meetings, like she's too stupid to know who LaRouche was.

Let's not pretend like what we're watching is suddenly unprecedented. The difference here is that the right got tired of the left's schitt and started pushing back, and the left, predictably, started squealing like Ned Beatty on a boating trip.

A lot of minorities and immigrants LOVE him. Thinking of people as "groups" rather than individuals is how your party got into this mess of toxic identity politics in the first place.

Prepare for 5.5 more years of Trump. There's no one that can beat him currently running.

I'm actually way more confident. If Trump has to drop to this level of bigotry just to get the blood pumping in his deplorable base, he is in trouble. This will not work.

And, all those Republicans not speaking out who still have ambitions for higher office will always have to confront that question of why they didn't say anything? The GOP is in trouble

Do you really think the story will have that much staying power though? I tend to doubt it. We're over a year and a half out from going to the ballot box in a general... had this gone down in September/October 2020, then I'd be more inclined to buy that take.

But this far out I have a feeling there will be hundreds of "explosive" type stories (from all sides/partisanships) which will make people forget about this (at least in terms of a primary voting motivation).

If the Dems are smart, they won't let it die, or the Epstein story. But who knows, an economic or foreign policy situation might arise that will let all the air out of this balloon

I'm not looking to be adversarial, but take this for what you consider it worth:

You are 100%, almost inconceivably, wrong about what he says and how often he says it.  I would attribute that to listening only to voices that sound like yours, or the fact that you're my old buddy Smitty the practical joker.

His approval rating is impacted in large part because there is a chorus of voices screaming in unsion "JOKE", then "RACIST" then "SEXUAL PREDATOR", then "TAX CHEAT" then "TREASON" then "OBSTRUCTOR" and now back "SEXUAL PREDATOR".  All of this, btw, wrapped up in the theory  that he can't stay on message. Soundbite tyranny.

And, imo, I think of people like  you as "extended warranty" voters, buying what's sold without even questioning the cost or the value of the purchase.

That last part probably sounds adversarial, but it isn't. Some people find comfort in the extended warranty.

Btw--on my comment on soundbites, I get the argument that Trump causes some of that. I don't disagree, my point is only that is not ALL  he does.

Considering he tweets this stuff practically everyday, I don't see how I could be wrong. It's all there right on his tweeter feed.

Trump uses his sound bites to control the narrative. They have zero plan whatsoever on how to fix immigration, and now instead of the media focusing on kids in cages, and the inhumane treatment of some people at the Southern Border Detention Facilities, that entire news cycle is gone. Now the Democrat Party has now been labelled as socialists with the face of the party having become 4 Congresswomen whose politics don't resemble anything close to the Democrat Leadership's.

It was brilliant on his part, and he's become a very savvy politician over the past couple years knowing how to attack his opponents.

Every attack Trump conducts via Twitter is very calculated. He hovers over the line of inappropriate, and probably crossed it this week, but it changed the narrative and it fires up his base and the bottom line is CNN and MSNBC aren't showing pictures of kids in cages anymore.

Short term goal, achieved.

There are plenty of smart Dems...but I don't know that they are smart (or at least as focused) as they need to be, collectively.

my take is that they want to run the most outlandish group, ever, to secure Trump's 2nd term.

how else can you explain the madness?????????

Doubtful.

Pelosi knows they can't win with AOC's policies as part of the Presidential Platform, which is why she's trying so hard to shut her up.

Unfortunately AOC is a crusader and an ideologue. She's under no threat of losing her seat next year and accordingly will continue pushing her policies until the cows come home.

Pelosi has no control over her, and it's probably going to destroy their chances of winning the Presidency next year.

I know, people are really freaking out right now. But its a long game and Trump is doing more long term damage to himself than anything.

I don't think they are, but they could surprise. - If the dems were smart they would get out front on the four rookies and either get them in line, or get rid of them. Trumps tactics made that harder for them to do. Those four are driving the left so much farther left than is sustainable. Bernie was fine cause he was a cute old man who was never gonna be given anything and he knew when to shut up- these ones are a much bigger threat to the dems.

I also don't think either side wants to embrace the Epstein story (as evidenced by how ignored it has been anywhere that isn't this board) It's mud for both sides of the isle.

You think both sides will be making tv commercials with the other sides candidate hanging and partying with a child trafficking rapist? I can only think the Democrats will be able to do that.

There is apparently a highly qualified immigrant from Jamaica, a successful business woman,  who will be running against her, as the GOP candidate... that will be the true litmus test.

I know she has her quirks, but she really isn't as stupid as many here seem to feel she is.  She is young....remember the learning curve we had to give Trump?

I don't think any other attack on Trump has worked, and this one has even less substance than the others. (at least so far) Socialites party together, it's not a big revelation. Clinton on the flight logs 2 dozen times is a much bigger deal. And there are a billion other threads to be pulled on.
