Josh Allen already impressing in Buffalo

The point is the spin in rookie camp or OTA's or whatever is generally overly positive. For many reasons - build fan excitement, sell tickets, marketing / advertising, player morale, and on and on.

Until they put pads on and start playing other teams we dont know what we really have.

Yet there is a camp that thinks we always have to blindly agree that player xyz is the best ever because our new front office and coaching staff (who are also the best ever) say so. By saying that EJ also got praise does not mean anyone is rooting against Allen or saying he sucks. Its just saying things tend to always looks this way this time of year. So hearing about the pass that was thrown in shorts with no rush to an undrafted WR caught against an undrafted CB, are not the type of things to make you believe he is the best guy ever type of stuff. That see "proof we have our franchise QB" or falsehoods that "Tyrod or Fitz or whoever never would have made that pass", etc.

I get it to a point. Then it gets to be overkill. You guys are the vets. Lol.

Buffalo Bills head coach Doug Marrone likes what he's seen from rookie quarterback E.J. Manuel -- in fact, Marrone says the former Florida State signal caller is the best rookie player he's ever coached (Marrone was an assistant with the Jets and the Saints). The Bills selected Manuel with their first-round pick in the 2013 NFL Draft.

"Rookie quarterback EJ Manuel passed the eyeball test in his first practice with the Buffalo Bills Friday. The 6-foot-5, 237-pounder from Florida State showed off his big arm and a nearly effortless ability to throw deep down the sideline during the first of three rookie minicamp practices inside the Bills’ fieldhouse."

This is definitely selective memory. I remember EJ had inconsistent at best OTAs. Everyone remembers the hospitality tent... I don't know if Allen will continue having good OTAs and I'm not gonna say that guarantees he'll be our franchise QB, but if anyone thinks every Bills QB looks good in OTAs I can say that's not true.

I just remember he was big and strong, and a “very nice guy”. What a ringing endorsement! I don’t remember much about how he was at playing football.

i remember him being pumped up just as Allen is being now.  It will last until his first I'll advised pick. The best thing Allen has going for him is he's never played.

That is his strength. He's better at the longer stuff than the dink and dunk throws.

long passes are nice. But a NFL QB makes his living throwing dink 'n dunk passes. JP had a nice long ball but regularly bounced in passes to guys a yard down field on 3rd and 1.

Yeah, it’s funny how if you don’t have a franchise QB, the backup QB can be so popular. They never miss the wide open WR,  never fumble, never throw a pick, etc. Actually playing often exposes them for what they are, and why they are the backup.

I pray Allen can make those “controlled running game” passes to move the chains. A nice long ball is great, but this isn’t the Raiders of the AFL anymore.  That Brady guy does ok with a lot of short passes...

All I can say is Allens old OC never had the "it" factor when it came to calling plays. There was no rythem or fluidity to his offense. It was always herky jerky. He never tried to get Allen into a rythem passing. Never managed to get his offense into a rythem where the other team didn't know what was coming at them. Or made the defense sit back on their heals undecided on how to defend a qb who had all this talent. It was almost like he was standing behind the offense while they were lined up telling the defense what play they were going to run next. Imagine one of the worst OC's the Bills ever had and times it by 2. How that offense won 3 national championships at North Dakota State with him calling the plays amazes me to this day.

So when you watch what Allen had to persevere while he was qb at Wyoming, it is astonishing what he and Wentz accomplished despite Vigen and his horrible play calling. I was used to the Paul Roach and Joe Tiller eras at Wyoming. Providing wide open offenses and zero predictability other than high scoring games. Tiller went on and brought the West Coast offense to the Big Ten and Purdue. Giving Brees his shot at the NFL. A predominantly run first  conference. Bohl is building a great base at Wyoming,  but it would go a lot faster there if Vigen was not a part of it. So please understand that if Allen were under an offense like Texas Tech, or Oklahoma, his numbers would be crazy. It takes a lot for me to get up for a football game knowing Vigen will be calling the plays. Bohl is a loyal guy and keeps him. I understand loyalty. But how Vigen got to coach Wentz and Allen is mystifying. Probably the only reason he is still coaching. In our bowl game against Central Michigan, Allen had thrown for three touchdowns in the 1st quarter. So what did Vigen do after that? He went back to his usual and ran on 1st and 2nd down every series. Sometimes 3rd down depending on where the ball was. In Allens last game with Wyoming , Vigen smothered Allen one last time and didn't let him air it out. Made him hand it off even though it was a blowout. And some of you guys wonder why Allens numbers were what they were. You had to live it to believe it. I hate Vigen with a passion. If a good qb wanted to go to Wyoming to play to showcase his talents to the the NFL, I would tell them to take a pass. As much as it hurts me to say that. I love Bohl as the HC at Wyoming. He is a good man and learned under Tom Osborne at Nebraska as a player and coach. His defense is being lauded by some to be a top 10 defense this year. So Wyoming should be in most games this year just because of that. Wyoming defense might have 4 to 5 drafted players next year, they are that good and deep. The only question marks are at defensive backs. You never know about them until they are under fire.

Interesting...seeing this keeps me reserved about Allen then

I've been in the Allan camp since we've taken him but you're absolutely right.  We'd all love the kid to be the guy but "you lose with potential you win with performance". Mr. Parcells

I can't think of any sources off hand but Allan has been described as a guy who can identify his problem and self teach.

It's really any one's guess now.

The open practices are going to be the most clear.  I would say easily half of the media members that follow the Bills were against his selection.  They want to prove their own intellegence.  So far no peep.  Even some forced praise.  Allens strengths are apparent and easy to see.   His accuracy knock are not as severe as they were protrayed to be.  I think Allen starts week 1.  And preseason game 1 he is announced as the starter.

Doug Marrone, the guy who up and quit on the team... seems like a trust worthy guy if you ask me.
