Does signing Vontae say anything about EJ Gaines?

I guess consensus is EJ is gone.

I dont really mind if hes gone or not. I think we have to find another guy to add in now.  We dont know what we will get out of Vontae and hes coming off season ending surgery.

We did very well in the secondary last year, which was a big surprise.

Signing Davis also might make next year's 3rd round pick easier to deal this year due to the comp formula.  I say go with Davis and draft a rookie to play behind Davis and White.  Hopefully, you get a 3rd comp for Gaines or someone we are losing.  Use next year's original third as some ammo for moving around this year.  That's how I'm looking at it.

Does it mean hes gone? Do we need to have both? Did we have any rotational guys do well in EJ's absence? I remember there was one guy out there last year that was horrible.

My guess and hope would be....it does NOT mean EJ is gone.  IMO we need 3 very good CBs.

We only had two last year.  Resigning Gaines and signing Vontae would give us 3 and a huge overall roster upgrade.

However, I have not seen the amount of Vontae's contract.  That could tell you if Gaines is still in play for us to resign.

And, I am not confident in Vontae totally recovering.  It reminds me of Takeo Spikes being I don't know if he will regain is previous form.

I'm resigned to the idea that Gaines will not be back.

Too bad but I agree he is gone - when he played he was dang good - when he didn't the Bills took a step back......would be awesome to keep him but the handwriting is on the wall - he wants bank.  BIG bank......good move by the Bills....more and more I am liking the way these boys are running the FO.  ABOUT DAMN TIME!

Go Bills!

Based on what?  A hunch?  IMO we don't know as this FO is a new regime.  You could be right.  But, I am not sure yet.

Based on his lack of reliability due to injury history and the fact that a better player in the person of Davis was just signed.  Beyond that is the compensatory pick formula that Beane is on the record of saying it will be a consideration in what they do in UFA.  It also explains why Chris Ivory was in for a visit as both he and Davis don't hurt the Bills in that regard.

EJ's gone.

Davis and White are your starting CBs. Johnson likely to be re-signed for vet minimum or close to it. Depth in draft.

Anyone holding onto the notion that Bills will pay Gaines AND Davis for this season -- when there's only room to start for one of them, since neither are slot corners -- is kidding themselves.

As much as I (as a fan and seen what teams can do with comp picks) think comp picks are good.  This FO showed last year that at this point or last years point the comp picks were not a priority as we could have released guys to get a 3rd round pick.  I know the FO is different this year as McD ran the show for the start of FA last year and now McBeane is doing it this year and I know each year is different.  But, don't fully believe that is the main reason behind these moves.

Does anyone know Davis' contract at this point?

Yeah. If they bring in Kurt Coleman for a visit -- thus going 3 for 3 on visits with "won't count against the comp pick formula" guys -- then we'll know there's something to it.

Nope. But even if it's for vet minimum, which I doubt, I STILL don't think they bring back Gaines. Availability and buy-in are big to this coaching staff, and Gaines seems to lack both, based on his injury history and his seeming eagerness to leave Buffalo at season's end.

It's part of the equation just as Beane said.  The players still have to fit team needs which is certainly the case with both Davis and Ivory.

Maybe it has to do with a plan and comp picks.  But, it could also be they are bringing in players that they are allowed to bring in before FA starts.

I do not think it is one or the other though.  Probably both and a good plan.  But, we bring players in year round to evaluate and entertain options.  These are players we are interested in (and/or using for leverage) because at this point in the year's calendar we are able to bring in.

I think Gaines may still be possible. He has a very specific skill set as a zone corner that is not a great fit for every team and he's had injury issues, so I'm not sure what type of interest he will receive as a free agent.

That said, if we do re-sign him, we could play Davis in the slot. He is a bigger corner with good man to man skills, which would help him there. Leonard Johnson could be #4, and then you are in a very good place depth wise.

I agree we are ready for someone to overpay for him.  But, not sure it will happen.

Agreed, that Gaines may or may not get the pay day some think based on injuries and fit in our system.
