dpberr
What's your take? Think it's saber rattling or something more? Is the "training exercise" the public cover of a military buildup? Would the Chinese tacitly approve the removal of Kim Jong Un? Would the United States remove Jong Un with the understanding that the Communist government would remain but under leadership selected by the Chinese? Would we wait for the North Koreans to strike first?

Azalin
As far as I know we do this every year - an annual joint military exercise with South Korea. Unless there's a new dimension to it that I haven't heard about, it sounds like any rumors of impending war are nothing more than fanciful reporting and fear mongering. Would we wait for the North Koreans to strike first? I have quite a few. The entire peninsula over the past 12 months has been a freak-show of epic proportions. Not just on the northern side of the border: http://www.npr.org/sections/thetwo-way/2016/10/29/499864915/swirling-scandal-involving-shamanistic-cult-threatens-s-korean-president http://www.bbc.com/news/world-asia-37971085 I'll keep my Deep State theories confined to the thread designated for that kind of speculation... but it seems to me like DPRK has been let off its leash and are intent on testing just how far they can push things now with everyone distracted by the political unrest in both Europe and the US. If I were a betting man, and I'm not, I'd lay my money on China being the one to use force before the US does. Their patience seems to be running thin and they certainly will not comply with a US led strike (and eventual occupation/regime change plan) so close to their border. /dev/null
If we do there will be a ton of dead South Koreans. A ton is 2000. The death toll would be in the millions. So more like kilotons of dead

Would we wait for the North Koreans to strike first? Technically speaking the war (which also technically speaking wasn't a war) never really ended. We've been doing annual joint military exercises for decades (Ulchi Focus lens, Team Spirit and now Foal Eagle) for decades. We're not exactly covering anything up. Regardless of who strikes first, casualties in the south will be massive. Granted, the capabilities of the north to hammer Seoul with artillery is a bit overstated but as dev/null noted the first 24-48 hours alone would see millions in casualties. Not to mention the humanitarian crisis that would quickly follow. I hope we don't see armed conflict over there, but it's always been on the verge. They're essentially a turn of a key away from being a nuclear power, same with Germany. Edited March 15, 2017 by Deranged Rhino
