I would really like to know robey/gronk

Recommended Posts

See the thread I started regarding the systemic breakdown in D communication yesterday, as reported by Corey Graham in his post-game interview.

He suggested every big play NE had was the result of communication breakdown, with one side of our D playing one defense and the other side of the field playing another, etc.

All the product of an excellent coaching staff which is clearly on top of things, much as Bill B. and the Patriots usually are.

I don't see any miscommunication on the Gronk TD--in fact, it was great communication. Every player in the back 7 got the call to check RAT, and they did.

Good communication; bad defensive scheme.

I knew the coverage and I saw the check and coverage called. It was... hilarious. This is the offense simply doing what it needs to against a bad d scheme. Tom Brady sees us call single man coverage and knows Meeks is **** so he had options.

Needless to say, at no time do we need to go nickel with Robey on Gronk or any other nickel either. We need a LB on him jamming and on him like Lawson used to and a safety over top of him. He's the only one that will ever beat us deep because of his seam routes

My exact reaction was: "they just checked rat; it's man coverage...oh ****."

Is that a standard check for most teams? Seems like an elementary way to line up when a team is going no huddle? Just a guess.

FWIW, on the TD, it looked like NRC was very close to swatting that ball away. The all 22 probably will have a better angle.

I thought so at first as well, because my seats are on the visitor's sideline. The replay angle from the Bills' sideline shows me he wasn't all that close.

I dont think Ive ever seen a team try to "assign" defenders to Patriot players yet. And at this point, what does anyone have to lose?

For example, "No matter where Edleman lines up, if he is on the field then Robey is on the field and assigned to cover him. No matter where Gronk lines up, AWilliams is on the field and assigned to cover him".

(AWilliams is just an example since we dont really have anyone close to being able to match up on Gronk. And given how long hes been in the league, I cant believe we havent brought someone in for just that reason. Heck we carry 8 kickers for every scenario, we should be able to justify a Safety/LB/Hybrid for covering our Division Champ's biggest weapon)

Part 2 of my scheme proposal above! No matter where he is, line up a LB in his face and make sure he cant come of the line clean.

peewee football we learned about tight ends. Always the ones that kick your ass. In junior high I was a right end. And pretty good. I didn't go out for routes much in a very important game where I'd have made a difference because I kept getting chopped at the line. Of we used defenders to simply take out his legs we would slow his ass down or stop him

Manny Lawson was decent at it. George Wilson would have been fine. Daron lee was undersized but gronk is why I wanted him. If you can get a good linebacker in coverage you'll fair better than having a good linebacker in pass rush. They're a lot harder to find and anyone can rush the passer.

Lawson was good at it, for sure, but that was 2 years ago and Lawson has lost a couple steps. Hughes was pretty good at covering Gronk last year, but he's needed upfront. Need another, cheaper Hughes for covering.

Good question...not sure about the commonality of automatically checking to man when the backfield gets emptied, but I can guarantee you that NE knew what they were going to do. I mean, if I recognized it from the stands, you can bet better than even money that Brady knew.

I feel like we (TBD and even you and I) have had these same conversations about how to stop the Pats, every year for the past 6 years.

Jam Gronk and <insert fast white WR here>, knock them off their routes and disrupt timing.

But it never happens.

Right, I was thinking the same thing. Little Tommy must have a joygasm when he sees that check.

He definitely did, and then picked his pre-snap preferred matchup, which is obviously the smallest man on the field vs. the largest receiving threat on the field.

How in the heck did Robey end up in single coverage with Gronk in the middle of the field on that touchdown

I mean....I know Brady might be the best ever.....but how does that even happen

That was a classic mismatch. Robey never had a chance unless Brady would have got off a bad throw.

No question NRC blew it. Kelso said he used the wrong technique and should have shaded inside instead of outside. I'm just saying that the Bills formation presnap gave Marcia an easy read.

Except that it wasn't man coverage at the initial call, so it wasn't an easy read.

The check made it man coverage, so it became an easy decision.

Bad scheme
