Jason Cole report on Doug Whaley

Where did I say we need to have pro-bowl talent for depth? I guess I went too far with "dominating" but I still stand by the fact that we have been practically throwing unprepared players to the wolves for the most part when someone goes down. We signed a guy who hasn't suited up in over 12 months. Not an encouraging back up plan, if you ask me.

Whaley was named GM in May of 2013. Jeff Tuel's first start was in October 2013. Whaley was the GM (in title).

*Edit/Rant: This whole Tuel thing...I don't want it to get overblown because it was a few years ago...but the fact that people are conveniently not accrediting that to Whaley shows how little accountability he has. He gets an unnecessary pass and we shift blame on to Nix. I just can't really say Whaley has done a great deal to impress me. He doesn't strike me as a very prepared man.

You mentioned Spikes who has have suited up in 12 months. That's bull ****. Kelvin Benjamin has not suited up in 12 months and coming off a injury.

Does that mean he is not worthy of playing because he didn't play last year.

Don't give me oh nobody wanted him crap. The Pat's wanted him until he got into some legal issues that the pats or no other team wanted to deal with last year

Honestly, no, I don't have a clear memory of it. I thought the opinions on him were pretty mixed.

Here's a mutlipager with references by many posters to Kolb's injury concerns. Kevin Kolb > Ryan Fitz was Whaley's worst move, followed closely by Chris Williams ( at a ridiculous price) > Richie Incognito

Ringing endorsement for Spikes.

Once again someone at 1 Bills Drive is chirping. Same sh*t, different day.

I'm 50/50 when it comes to Whaley. There's things I like and things I really dislike. His trend of always wanting to trade up in he draft is concerning.

I'm also waiting to see how he handles this Tyrod contract. I'm worried that the reports of $35M over 2 years maybe true. If so Whaley would be giving Tyrod an additional $10M over the next 2 seasons for no reason. That would truly be concerning.

Disagree. In addition to providing a bit more time for TT to prove himself at a discounted rate for franchise QBs, it will provide easier inroads into retaining Gilmore.

GO BILLS!!!

Tuel was an invention of Doug Marrone. He was the one who liked him and wanted him.

Whaley got rid of Fitz?

Thanks for the link, I'll browse through.

Yeah, don't you remember? Whaley sent the Tampa GM some pornography showing Fitz and a donkey in compromising positions, but some jokesters intercepted the email and sent it to Buddy Nix, who mistakenly forwarded it to Jerry Sullivan.

I should clarify, that I don't think Whaley is a perfect GM, I just think he's put together our strongest roster(s) since our last playoff appearances, combined with the fact that he's still relatively young, I think it'd be silly to move on from him at this point in time.

I posted this in the Ragland thread, but I suppose it belongs here...

The rookie injuries are bad luck, but Whaley has been really short-sighted with a lot of moves and these types of injuries shouldn't be so crippling. We never seem to have a back-up plan and have been put in bad situations by a lack of depth. Jeff Tuel started a game at QB. When Kyle Williams and Aaron Williams went down with injury, it was the theme of the season. No one stepped up and dominated in those roles because we had no depth to fill those spots. Our current WR depth is questionable, and I don't know who Whaley could possibly blame for that.

I'm still on the fence with Whaley, but I feel like he needs to be better prepared. Even though he is a great player, the decision to move up to get Watkins looks more like a Detroit Lions move every year. I don't know how a team with no depth can afford to be throwing 1st round picks out the window, and that is a prime example of the nearsightedness I'm referring to.

Jeff Tuel started a game after the two guys before him went down. Kolb was the intended starter and went down in pre-season, then EJ went down. Then Thad Lewis crapped the bed. Show me a team with a strong 4th string QB.

I don't disagree with you that Marrone was all about Tuel, but why does that mean Whaley is absolved of blame?

Because he was signed as a camp arm not as an answer. He wasn't even drafted in the seventh round. As soon as Kolb got hurt Whaley made a trade for a QB who actually played decent and signed a bunch of scrubs. Then the coach said I like this guy and want to keep him/play him. When Marrone was gone, Tuel was too

Again...it's mind-numbing the 2013 QB situation could be justified at all. Kolb went down early and we essentially were down to just EJ. He had plenty of time (an entire season) to fill the roster with QB's other than Thad Lewis and Jeff Tuel.

My memory is a bit rusty, but wasn't Thad brought in late in the pre-season w/ Leinart, they kept Thad, but stashed him since he hadn't had as much time with the system as Tuel? Tuel then was forced to play, and he sucked, so they brought up Thad?
