Freddy injured again.

Recommended Posts

I agree that the coaching, the overall play of the offense, and the offensive line play--really, in all of these, the poor coaching was a significant factor--makes it very hard to evaluate last year's offensive players. And I agree that McCoy likely would have been much less effective as well.

But Jackson has looked slow the last few years, and especially last year. And the relentlessness and explosiveness that were the hallmarks of his running style seemed significantly diminished. In the past so often it seemed he was tackled but then he would explode out of the pile and keep going... That is no longer the case.

Yes, I am hoping that those skills that seemed so diminished last year were the result of a poorly functioning team and his injuries, but it seemed like more than that, like he hit the wall. We will see this year...

I would love it if you are correct, that Jackson returns to form and is a central figure in the revitalized Bills this year. I think this can happen via his receiving more than his running, though. He needs to be in open space catching balls and not plowing through a line like he once did. I hope that is how they use him.

However, as much as I would love to see a major resurgence by Jackson, images of him running last year keep popping into my head..

Really? Because I've rewatched games from last season and I've seen him plow through guys like he has in the past. He's never been explosive in terms of speed, so that's why I don't agree when people say he's lost a step. He's as smart and shifty as ever and I think he's going to have a great year, assuming he can stay healthy.

So now it's 3 and that's not enough. How many would it take?

I want the best guys THIS YEAR. Screw the future. Besides, the future is now and Fred can still bring it. I'm sure we could find another RB as good as Karlos Williams in the 5th round next year if it comes to that.

How many times was he stuffed on 3rd downs, goaline runs? How many tds last year huh ? On how many carries, what 2tds. It was the O.C. It was the play calling ,It was this. It was that. Excuses, excuses. It was Fred a lot of times. Hey I love Fred, but when its time...........

my point is hes losing his explosion. as a running back, thats a big deal. 3 years ago his long run was 15 yards.

hes averaging under 4 ypc over the last 3 years, has dealt with a bunch of injuries and is turning 35 in a few months. its not shameful to say hes heading towards the door. the guys been a warrior, but he cant play forever. yesterday someone was pointing to adding 5 years to his career by making him a 3rd down back. thatd take him to 39 years old. call me a hater, but hes probably in his last year, and im not confident in whether he will have the legs for that. he might, but its a tough bet.

I can't argue with someone who just looks at basic numbers to make a point. YPC and age are all relative. He has less career carries than Shady. Does that matter to you though? Probably not. Hands over ears, eyes squeezed shut, everyone chant "Fred's too old! Fred's too old!"

Anyway, the season is only a few weeks away. We'll see how it all plays out.

I don't know. How about you tell us how many?

Not so sure about that. He looked very good last week, he needs to be kept for sure.

i think ive shown to be a lot more than just a stat sheet guy. so far youve told me im not allowed to use stats, or point to a lack of explosive plays to make a point about his effectiveness. what would you accept?

im not trying to tear fred down but at some point, age does catch up. there arent 37 year old specialist backs, even if theyve always been good role players that havent been given a million touches. the guys that everyone compares him to as examples of how an older back with less touches can succeed all retired around THIS age. hes already on a few years borrowed time as a result of his scenic path to nfl starter. but that doesnt mean he gets unlimited time.

does he have 8? 16? 24? games left in him? I dont know but im pretty sure anyone that is not emotionally invested in fred would agree that its probably at most this year and as a real outside shot maybe next.... and it might end up not working out this year.

sure he could lay a great block or make a smart situational drop at 40 but hes still got to be a healthy and productive rusher to earn that spot and the window is starting to close.

What exactly did he do that was so "very good" last week? Was it the 2.9 ypc? Was it all the tackles he broke? Was it all the times he found a hole that you couldn't drive a truck through. I've been hearing how great this guy is, but at least last week, he looked mediocre at best. He had 1 10 yard run and then 13 for 30. We've got at least 5 other RBs on the team that could have scored that TD.

I don't think he's horrible, but the hype on this guy and then the performance he turned in just don't jive IMHO.

Based on your previous posts I think it is a stretch to say that you love Fred, other than in the more abstract "I love him as a human being" sense.

He was productive in 2011 and 2013, and not effective in 2012 and 2014. IIRC, both 2012 and 2014, he played injured because CJ was out, and we had thin depth at the position.

This year we *should* have at least 3, if not 4, good runners on the team... it's just bad luck they're all banged up at the moment. Anyways, my point is, if FredEx is injured this year, most likely he won't have to rush back and play before healing, not to mention he likely won't get the majority of the carries, so should stay fairly fresh as a depth guy.

That all being said, if the coaches feel Brown, Karlos, and Boobie are more valuable to keep, then I'll understand. FredEx is old. He does a lot of the little things well, and he churns out yards when there are none, but it's hard to argue against father time.

I think a fair take. To a degree, with his lack of health the last year as well as camp currently- we would simply be throwing darts while blindfolded if either of us made a definitive statement about whether he's going to look good week 1, or if he does can it last all season. All we know is he's on borrowed time at this point and we hope his body will last as long as his roster spot does.

  • 2 weeks later...

They still don't want him because he's 34.

i am of the opinion that freddy has a spot on this team until he is 54! we need to get this guy in a playoff game at The Ralph this year! no offense to any of the past players, but i cannot remember ever loving a player like i love freddy.
