I'd love an it job. I could be a policeman. Or a butcher. Whatever it is I could be it. But she needs to pinpoint exactly what "it" is she wants to do. I was a postal service carrier for 60+ years. It served me good. Good luck.

IT stands for Information Technology. He wants to work with computers, Howard.

Not willing to work with a head hunter?

She might be. She really is all about what works for her. She's an ace and it kills me to see the lengths she goes to in the non-profit sector. They have no clue how good she really is. So, any help would be awesome.

Just bumping. Any ideas?

So she has decided not to get in contact with a head hunter? Seems to me that would be her best options.

She's down with a head hunter. I guess in her view, it comes to whether the bump in salary offsets the time off in non-profit. 35 hr work week, 9 weeks vaca, etc. I just know she is waaaayyy undervalued for her skill set. Frustrates me.....and her, because she really is an ace.

If you're searching online, limit the searches to Indeed.com and LinkedIn. Indeed has all postings from Monster, CareerBuilder and other, smaller, sites that don't refresh often. Indeed refreshes more frequently than any of the others. LinkedIn jobs are not normally posted on Indeed.com, which is why I recommend the separate search.

Glassdoor is good for job searches, but better to get company insight, including former/current employee reviews, interview questions/procedures which one can filter by job title, and most importantly, salary information - also filterable by job title.

If she doesn't have a LinkedIn account, make sure she gets one and makes it somewhat decent. Employers look there - often prior to the first phone interview (gatekeeper/talent acquisition person).

Best of luck!!

Well, she applied to the job on Monster Sunday afternoon, put her resume up and got a call from an IT headhunter by Noon yesterday. I guess they'll Skype later this week. She also got a few e-mails of inquiry. So far, so good. We'll see where it goes from here. Thanks again to all who helped with your input!

Keep in mind that she can work with more than just 1 head-hunter. If she's serious about looking for something else, even if it's just to see what's out there, she should contact as many as she can find.

I'd also recommend these guys: http://www.systemspersonnel.com/

I worked with them when I was just starting out way back in the day, and they're a great company. Based out of West Seneca so they probably have leads on the southtowns too.

Ha! Not sure who is CEO over there but I'd happily take their money.

I'll also add SelectOne to the list: http://www.selectonellc.com/

I've worked with a couple of recruiters there and could put her in touch if she wants.

I'm (desperately) looking to hire at least one, possibly two, Techs myself. Along with 6 more outbound sales reps. We're based out of Amherst, great company, all I'll say for now. If anyone is interested PM me and lets exchange details. I've been working with all of the staffing agencies mentioned, but it's tough finding good candidates.

To that end, when I moved back to Buffalo last year and started my real estate venture, it was also a struggle to put together a crew of construction/carpenters/etc. Everyone already had jobs and were too busy.

Between both companies Im managing in two very different industries, and the lack of available candidates, I dont ever want to hear anyone say there are no jobs in Buffalo! From what I've seen personally, and talking with executives from other companies, the huge shortage of (qualified) workers is the bigger problem.

This.

At HSBC and M&T both, it's a struggle to find entry/mid-level IT professionals. Even when workng with local colleges to recruit.

For sure.

And its not like we're paying peanuts. $40k-55k for entry level (with a lot of opportunity to grow) is pretty good living in the Buffalo area.

I just got back from a partner conference in Phoenix, and the company I was meeting with out there averages 2000 applications to every job they post, get highly qualified people, and arent even paying what we are.

The jobs are here in WNY, but the people arent. I'm thinking of starting my own marketing campaign in California, "Move to WNY! All the taxes you're used to, but with jobs, affordable housing, and drinking water to go with them!"

It snows in WNY and the girls are ugly over there. Sorry. Id rather be dying of thirst in a 99 story apartment building full of rats.

That really is better than WNY.

Of course. It's why most big companies choose to locate where ever they do.

"The state of New York is literally building a $750 manufacturing plant for SolarCity, and charging $1 annually in rent"

This was the lesson learned from Bethlehem steel, and from other large companies closing major factories. The city of Seattle has recently done something similar. The local government owns the property, factory, and all of the equipment. If SolarCity (or Bethlehem Steel) shuts down, they simply find other people that want to use it and keep the jobs in the area. No more abandoned buildings and thousands out of work overnight.

I've already talked to a few people who work at the SolarCity plant in California and they are planning on transferring to Buffalo when the new factory opens. How about that?!? People moving TO Buffalo!

Any Good paying jobs besides IT that is the ?

Yep. Marketing and Advertising is on the rise. Bank (First Niagara and HSBC) jobs are always around. Plenty of trade-type work to go around, as every carpenter/plumber/laborer I know is booked pretty solid.

What industry are you looking in?

Without naming names, how did the TBD poster influence her getting the job?
