New England Patriots caught deflating game balls

Oh Jesus Christ, they won by 38 points. They could have been using a marshmallow and this wouldn't have mattered.

This is getting old and makes us look like jealous idiots.

And for theove of God, enough with the asterisks askter the name Pats. It's childish, but more importantly MAKES NO SENSE. You're not questioning their name. If you want to use it after one of the Titles (should you mention one of those), it's still childish, but at lease it makes sense - if that's what you're going after.

I think that is what any organization would count on in a conspiracy . We actually still live in a country where a coup de etat happened in 63 and simple idiots killed other people that made a difference etc. We are made to feel like babies about this . Why not a stupid football game . Even in the spirit of competition harbaugh was correct in taking a penalty instead of burning a time out . Not a lot anyone can do and the league won't embarrass itself . So aside from empty stadiums whenever the pats play...

Or talk to coughlin and see that he evened the playing field by installing a frequency if his own in a linebackers helmet . It's amazing that we still want to believe they are straight up that good when the difference between a blowout is three or four key plays.

No ?

Green Bay blows out Seattle if they don't get fake field goal and McCarthy tries to score at mid girls instead of trying to run clock . Perception is a funny thing . I'm not saying Indy wins .. It's just that you never know. It's not whining to strip a sprinter of a win because of steroids or to strip lance of seven straight wins. It's simply that we and the patriots never know what really happened . Once the league swept it under the rug . It one .. Made them complicent and two .. Encourage the rest if the league to cheat as well . Who knows .

Aside from searching all teams gear for radio frequency gear before they leave the field and drug test everyone from each side ... What can you do .

I only think you can assume the worst .. It's just like the NSA doesn't give info out to "friends" .. Nah that would be wrong . This happens in life , why not football . I only a agree that whining doesn't help except to inform the next team that they are stupid not to prepare .. It's what us and the Russians have been doing to each other for years. It's why we sent pros to play sports in the Olympics . If you read the spy gate book it's hard not to believe it . We should have fun reminding them every game that they always cheat and try to fock em at every turn instead of expecting compliance . Do you think the NSA is gonna say .. Whoops .. Sorry let me stop having this awesome advantage over the world .

Bad batch then?

Maybe I don't get the uproar involved in this. Apparently, the league measures the balls prior to gametime to ensure they meet pressure spec and then entrusts a NFL attendant to preside over them during the game.

Are people suggesting that the Pats found a way to deflate the balls (for whatever value they felt that might have provided) without anyone noticing?

YES. OBVIOUSLY.

The NFL admits that 1 or 2 balls are taken out each game because of this. So they must have a way of measuring. The conflicting part of the Patriots* balls are that several were found to be under. And the NFL gives some leeway in terms of pressure saying the pressure needs to be between 12.5 and 13.5 PSI, which they measure before the game.

Sure, how they are measured could be faulty but it was about the same temperature in Seattle and no mention of ball problems there. Plus, I would hardly call 50 degrees "cold" in terms of NFL games. I'd also add, if the refs noticed by feel that they were deflauted, they must have been fairly low on pressure.

I thought the ambient air temp. in Foxborough, particularly later in the game, was in the high 30s. Is that not correct?

Also, how do you know a potential PSI problem was discovered by referees feeling or eyeballing the suspect balls?

We don't know how the first ball was found to be low. It may have been a product of a normal test/check.

Yes, which tells you all you need to know about why they would potentially modify the air pressure yesterday. Cheater's gonna cheat, basically.

16 and 0 .. Yea .. They might be still cheating . It took how many years of denials to hold lance down and pull his wings off .. And you still don't know if he would have won straight up or not .

to me.... if these things are still happening, Im sure it extends very much elsewhere in that outfit.

The team overall really hasnt been that good, especially when you look at the injuries.

Almost 40 straight meaningful home wins against the AFC. In a capped league with a good deal of parity... that seems pretty fishy. The recent cheating allegations ripped the bandaid off the old wound and I am again questioning all results. Part of it is hatred for the Patriots, but I think I would be really angry if I were different rivals. I have many Broncos and Eagles fans on my facebook feed and I see a lot of venting from them as well.

It's amazing the access home teams have to everything . A little distraction etc. Again . You never know the degree to which this or that helped in such adverse conditions

Regardless of the impact the deflated balls would have...it makes you wonder what doesn't get detected. They're the only team that needs a forensics team to go through and make sure they're not up to some bullsh*t

What's next ...... the Pats were also guilty of deflating the Colts DL which allowed Blount to run roughshod over them.

Please see above posts commenting on your attitude here.

The fact that NE is the better team and would have won (maybe by a ton) without tampering PSI levels in balls is completely irrelevant here!

Why don't people get that? If there is a rule saying X and evidence proves you deliberately acted to break X, you CHEATED.

No one cares if you were the better team anyway, or what color hoodie Bill B. was wearing during the game, either.

I will say it is funny that ESPN and others are putting Brady's comments on as some sort of proof that this did not happen.

Some dude on ESPN, former ref, said if this did happen only a $25,000 fine.

Again, much ado about nothing

This is what I was asking way up thread. I agree, if this is how the league handles a "proven infraction" then who give's a rat's ass.

It does not change the fact, though, that the Patriots possibly did intentionally cheat and are obviously looking to gain illegal competitive advantages.

That's worth noting.

A tired line and luck completing 40 percent .. Yea brady must be that much better ..it's possible for it to look demoralizing . .. Point is you don't know .. Be just as careful to extrapolate to damage of a competitive advantage on the whole picture IF True . What would cycling look like if the postal team didn't having cheating down to an art .. Maybe exactly the same . Who f in knows

im sick of the whole "they would have won anyway" or "oh well" attitude.

This is just what they (apparently) got caught doing. God knows what goes on week-to-week for these advantages. People wonder why this team gathers misfits, botches draft picks, suffers giant injuries, yet still can get 1st round byes and win playoff games. Their home record also raises red flags IMO.

you just watch and its all choreographed plays that seem to do the exact opposite of what the defense is going for. Last night it was at like a 95% clip. Nobody guesses right with that much efficiency.

Totally agree

allegedly...

and of course as soon as the league says no crime committed.....folks will be screaming cover up.

If they actually proved they cheated .. No good ratings for the puppy bowl . It will be squashed . Bellichick should be tarred and feathered and laughed at as a buffoon

I can tell you Bills fans are the k my ones who have this thread at 6+ pages already.

Seriously? It's a pretty big story today across the nfl. It is being discussed on every national show. It's all over twitter. I've seen longer threads on TSW about backup long snappers. I don't think it has anything to do with Bills fans only care about this because they are Bills fans. Its a real story today in the national media.

the 25k fine is what USC got when Lane Kiffin was caught. Not sure but maybe that is what they were referring to, it's the closest precedent of it happening.

this is so stupid

I have an idea, why doesn't the NFL actually have league officials in charge of game balls starting 3 hour prior to the game.

and exactly why is this a big news story...oh yeah, because people now think NE cheated. Yep that's why they crushed Indy 45-7!

or the fact they invest their money wisely in front 7 players and get WR's, RB, and DB's off the trash heap. refuse to over pay veteran players like logan mankins. get rid of dumb players who make mental mistakes. bench players who screw up. trade down more often than trading up.

What I find interesting is this stuff way, way up-thread about allegations that came out at the time of video taping scandal.

All that stuff someone posted in italics.

It suggested Brady had a 2nd frequency in his helmet and that Bill B. or whoever else as talking to him right up to the snap of the ball, on an unmonitored channel (so they could say incriminating things without fear of reprisal) and it violated the "no radio 15 seconds before expiration of game clock" rule.

NEVERMIND PSI LEVELS IN BALLS. THIS RADIO CRAP IS INTERESTING!

What measures are taken at NFL games to inspect players' equipment before, randomly during, and after games?

I'm guessing NONE.

What sophisticated electrical engineering consultants are brought in to monitor the airwaves during an NFL game, in stadium?

I'm going to say NONE.

What specialist consultants are used before every game to inspect the telecom equipment used by the teams (coordinators up in the booth, coaches on sidelines, players' helmets) to try and make sure nothing strange is happening with the equipment itself.

I'm guessing NONE.

What specialist consultant (MOTOROLA?) is used as a neutral party to manufacture ALL EQUIPMENT USED BY ALL TEAMS assuring that it is all the same, can only do what is legal (can't broadcast on 4 channels) and is deliberately designed to be able to be monitored easily for tampering?

I'm guessing NONE.

I'm not a conspiracy nut! All I am saying is that if you want to alter the outcomes of football games, don't play around with an inflation needle and footballs.

Play around with telecom equipment and give key players on the field key information at key moments so they can better make decisions.

Imagine Kyle Orton dropping back in the pocket with good protection on a given pass play. He is looking to his right and locked on a covered receiver. He doesn't even turn to the left side of the field.

In the meantime, a "spotter" up in the booth shouts into his head "LEFT LEFT LEFT" and this makes Kyle turn to his left and see a wide open receiver and throw him the ball. Receiver catches ball and scores TD.

You wouldn't need to luck out with this illegal communication system more than a few times in a game to potentially really help alter the outcome of the game.

At other times, it probably wouldn't even work! Humans being fallible and all...I can imagine shouting into the headset of some QBs and telling them "LEFT 20 yards (receiver's name)" or something....and they just ignore it and panic in the heat of the moment anyway...and take a sack.

But if you have the right QB...a good one...an experienced one....a calm and confident one....man, you could create a scoring machine by being able to talk to him all through a play.

You can also tell him PRECISELY what the D is and what the proper "read" is 2 seconds before the snap of the ball. That is probably the biggest advantage here.

I would assume most OCs can read a defense better than most starting QBs in the NFL.

Did anyone see Rodgers' face during the game yesterday? The guy seemed amazingly calm and composed the entire game...

Can you imagine what he could do with a really sharp offensive mind coaching him constantly in his headset before, during, after plays?

So .. The lance defense .. Point is you just don't know how much of a competitive advantage gives .
