Article: Looking at a potential contract for Jerry Hughes

"When combining all of the factors that will go into Jerry Hughes’ contract discussions this offseason, it seems that a five-year, $45.5 million contract with about $18-20 million in guarantees will suffice."

That doesn't seem so bad. Just as long as he realizes he is a product of the players around him.

A good piece, but it doesn't factor in that the price goes up every year as the cap goes up. The projection is based on obsolete data. He'll get more than they're projecting, and he's more appealing than JPP, who has back issues.

Why should that matter? He's wants as much money as he can get.

I think that article is way off. Hughes put up better numbers than all of those guys in his only two years of playing full time. Better against the run. Forced fumbles. Good amount of stuffs. The cap is going up. He's going to get well over 10m a year, IMO. Maybe closer to 12. I wouldn't doubt if Bills franchise him, which is 13+.

They'll toss the tag around as leverage, but no way they use it on him for 13.5

Sure there is. There are all kinds of factors that go into this, it's not simply is Hughes worth 13 million a year. It depends on if we trade for a QB and we think we are contenders. Then we decide to overpay him a little to see where this defense takes us. It could be that we want a better alternative but we can't sign him so we bite the bullet for a year to see if he can do it again before the big long term deal. Perhaps it's an enticement for a coach we want, telling him listen we're keeping this defense in tact for you and we will tag Hughes if we have to. It may be a determination that we need to keep him because the offense is only going to get slightly better this season and we are a contender if the defense doesn't take a step back. There may be other reasons.

I've said this before but every year, on every team, about a third of the players are overpaid, a third are just about right, and a third are underpaid. It's not always bad to overpay a player, especially if it's only one year.

BTW projected tag for DEs in 2015 is $14.6M.
