That's one way to close Gitmo: let the Taliban know that they can kidnap Americans and trade them for inmates. Eventually, the camp will be empty.

And, of course, he's a POW. The inmates at Gitmo aren't. <_<

I'd love to see the security profiles of those released.

Anyone catch at the end of the article that there is speculation that he may have left his unit voluntarily? Gigantic cheap shot without something to back it up.

Actually, I just spent an hour or two reading posts from soldiers who were looking for him after he went missing. Some of them didn't mince words when they said they would kill him on sight for what he caused. Turns out many Americans died trying to find him after he walked off. This guy is a deserter at best and traitor at worst. This story is about to get real fracked up. Jay Carney picked a good time to quit.

Let the chips fall where they may. The authors of the article should have included something to back up their speculation. Regardless, if our government knew that he was a deserter and traded 5 high level detainees for him under the premisethat we never leave our own behind, then once again they've got a major scandal on their hands.

No, they don't. Recovering an American "hero" is never going to be a scandal in more than a small minority of Americans' eyes.

Don't we not negotiate with terrorists? Or was that only foreign policy in "Air Force One?"

It's not unheard of to negotiate with "terrorists" in an attempt to normalize relations with them. I would not be surprised at all if this is part of a process to "engage" the Taliban to involve them in the Afghani government. Not unlike how people decided that the solution to the problem of Somali warlords was to make that problem part of the solution.
