What's the goal of doing it on purpose?

the agent is the bad cop, the player the good cop.

7/22/2010: Signed a six-year, $61.5 million contract. The deal contains $43.156 million guaranteed, including a $3 million signing bonus and Dumervil's first, second, and third years' base salaries. 2013: $8 million, 2014: $10 million, 2015: $8,193,335, 2016: Free Agent

then there's this....As ESPN's Andrew Brandt would say, "there will be lawyers." Dumervil's rep is alleging the Broncos changed the terms of the pay cut at the last minute, delaying the process. Dumervil's camp sent its ill-fated fax at 3:55ET, right as the Broncos were cutting him out of a supposed abundance of caution. The sides have yet to talk since the fiasco. We'd expect many twists and turns over the next 48 hours. Dumervil is looking unlikely to return to Denver.

No one has to be bad cop - a simple "we couldn't agree on terms in time, and everyone walks away fine.

Egg is all over everyone's face in this. It made an easily managed situation a disaster with no real gain.

Did Dumervil and/or his agent intentionally miss the deadline in the hope that the Broncos would fail to cut him, thereby guaranteeing him the $12 million? Is it possible that, during those fateful 35 minutes, Dumervil's agent heard from another team that would pay his client big money and made the delay-of-game call on the fly?

Did the Broncos, having gauged the market, decide after the fact that $8 million was too pricey for Dumervil and claim that the paperwork hadn't arrived as an excuse to part ways without reneging?

But (agent) Magid told USA Today Sports a different story saying the paperwork wasn't transmitted in time because the Broncos made late changes to the financial details.

Magid claims the team changed the terms of the contract the sides had been negotiating all week and didn't send him a correct copy of the final deal until after 3:30 p.m. EDT.

The key point in the new contract offer allowed the Broncos to cut Dumervil after this season without paying him, Magid said, adding Denver said they made the change because Dumervil had taken all week to accept their offer.
