Levitre signs with Titans

Finally, so the question is: Does Andy Levitre deserve to be the fourth highest paid guard in the league?

I believe that sounds about right to me... If he were on a decent team, he'd most likely be a pro bowler.

Think about how many years it took us to get a guard like Levitre and then tell me again how easy it is.

How true!!!! People act as if it is just so easy to grab a quality guard. Bill Parcells once said that it's easier to find wide reveivers in the dradt than guards, and no, I do not have a link.

Bills will now sign Reinhart if they can. He performed well in his starts these last couple of years, and, although he is not as flexible as Levetre in terms of moving to tackle, he is pretty good at guard. He also will not cost $8 mil a year. He will get 2-3 mil, I think though.

Oh, that sure is a big comfort.

thats got to be one year hits, not long term averages. otherwise, those numbers are just wrong.

but it still puts him right about 5. a fair deal. doesnt mean we dont have plans for some other fair deal that will benefit us more.

I wonder if we'll get a comp pick for him.

my guess is no.

we will only have so many expiring contracts, and odds are we will sign a lot of low level free agents as bandaids in the transition to new schemes.

Levitre got what he could, good on him. Its going to be hard to lose him. Anyone who watched him knew he was a key cog in the turnaround of the O-line. But 7.8 per year for a guard is tough to match when you can find guards who can do a good job for much less. Tough loss for the Bills but I hope they make a move to bring in a guard, Brandon Moore would be a nice fit.

I can see where some of you would have preferred to outbid the Titans on this, but at $8m you can't rationally say this is but so terrible a move. If that money is used to fill other holes and/or retain other players, you have to weigh that against what was lost...unless you just get off on complaining.

Not necessarily. The NFL typically won't give you a comp pick unless you have a net loss of free agents (players who were cut don't count). We probably won't lose anyone else besides Levitre, unless maybe someone signs McIntyre or Nelson. (Actually, I'm not even sure if Nelson would count, since we declined to tender him.) So if we sign even 2 UFAs who weren't cut by their former teams, we're ineligible for any comp picks, even if we signed those guys to low-end deals. And given that we have a new coaching staff who will want to bring in "their guys" -- especially on defense -- I think it's pretty likely that we sign 4-5 UFAs to low/mid money deals.

i dont think that nelson counts because of the option to tender. essentially we had first dibs on him and couldve gotten compensation if he left if we wanted.

generally spot on though, and why i dont expect a comp pick here.

Not really. You can structure contracts in all kinds of ways, but it's likely his 2013 salary will be heavily front loaded. If so, he'll be near the top of this list next year and well above his peers overall.
