I've read everything there is about this so far and have no !@#$ing clue what's going on.

Short version:

-his friend made a fake twitter using pictures of some girl he knows that didn't know Te'o and tweeted him

-eventually this fake person dies

-Te'o tells everyone his GF died, and that he met her in Standford and other details like her coming to Hawaii and talking to her for hours on the phone every night

-Now everyone knows it was a fake twitter

Look even if he was duped...he pretended that he had a gf who he met...then he kept this lie going and let a huge story about his character develop involving her death...there is little way he's a victim.

Whether someone considers an online GF a real GF is up to them. Ive read marriages have fallen apart because of secret online relationships where the "cheating" spouse never met the online mistress. Obviously in those instances the offended spouse considered it "real".

You missed:

-Te'o looks to be clearly in on it. Very screwed.

Is there any reason to bring his religious beliefs into it?

Comical irony? A guy who devotes his life to a religion founded by a convicted con artist, turns out to have pulled off the biggest hoax in college football history. How is that not approriate to note?

I'm not sure T'eo ever referred to her as his girlfriend, but even if he met her there's no reason why the girl couldn't have misrepresented who she was.

Everyone seems to be skipping one big item: if there is no dead girl, who was he speaking to on the phone, where is she now and what is her story? I'm guessing someone is requesting some phone company and ISP records right about now.

Neither does anyone else. But feel free to jump to any conclusion you want and state it with 100% certainty.

No question, I wouldn't argue otherwise. But I find it interesting that our society now appearly believes media has zero responsibility to understand or confirm what they are reporting.

Funny how blogs and other internet reporting mediums has diluted true and responsible investigative reporting. It's difficult for them to compete these guys...some just float crap out there & see what sticks to drive up traffic to their site. If it accurate, they're 1st with the story. If not, no follow-up...tough spot for the legit pro, IMO

Look to FOX News, CNN, ESPN, MSNBC and the like for killing credibility before 'the internet'

Two things. Deadspin did a great job reporting facts so we do know something. And also your missing the point of the phone part. There is no girl at all so he wasn't talking to anyone.

But what if real life girl was in on it using a made up name and profile?

But she was never a student at Stanford! I suppose she could have gone to the game in pursuit of her masterful scheme, but come on...

How about Te'o's father saying the girlfriend came out to Hawaii to visit Manti?

Murder detectives will tell you that usually, the most obvious and plausible explanation for a crime is the correct explanation.

When you have to go through a whole bunch of gymnastics to make a story make sense, it is probably a lie.

Unless there was someone which is possible in several different ways this goes. She could've been made up by the real life girl in the photos. He could've been speaking to the guy even hiding a romance. I assume at some point friends saw him answer calls, texts etc.... Which would've either been a dead line or...

Deadspin article is clear...the girl who's picture was on the account that he was talking to was a girl who never met him...he said he met that girl at Stanford...end of story....maybe he lied to make it seem less dorky or maybe he was in on it...you be the judge

Random girl goes to game. Happens into guys number. Says hey lets mess with him. Guy offers to fly her to Hawaii - hey free trip

That's no more hoops than teo and his friend creating it for fun from scratch. In fact based on the facts I've read so far it's almost the path of least resistance to an explanation

+1. Either Te'o is the victim of the most elaborate hoax ever played for zero financial benefit, or he's in on it. When you hear hoof beats you should think horses, not magical fairy unicorns from Mars.

Or he actually did talk to a girl but it wasn't the girl in the picture, just some other female who was in on it with the other dude.

That he might've met her and she started the profile with a fake name

To what end? She pretended to date him for years, well before he was making any national headlines, talked on the phone with him, and then pretended to die one day suddenly. He doesn't follow up at all. He never visits her in the hospital either after the crash or while fighting leukemia. Why?

Other than her word is there any proof? Or might she be the one at the epicenter and not him with regards to the lied? Just playing devils advocate until someone can say teo says he never met the girl, or her whereabouts are accounted for during one of his meetings with the "gf"
