Shawne merriman is back with the Bills

Recommended Posts

Maybe your memory is short because Bills D was responsible for a good chunk of the first five wins. Whether it was a coincidence or not, but the D play tailed off a lot after Merriman was IRd.

:flirt:

That would be why we were down 21-3 at the half against Oakland and had to score 21 pts in the 4th quarter to keep the lead - because our D was good?

That would be why we gave up 495 yds to NE and were down 21-10 at the half against NE - because our D was good?

Not that I'm opposed to bringing Merriman back. We've got to try something.

If you watch the games you'll notice we've been gashed on the run on Anderson's side. Anderson is 2" shorter and lacking 30-40 pounds on Mario. Carrington has impressed me & is near Mario's size & speed. Kelsay is basically a white Mark Anderson at 6'4" 255 and even look at their career stats. I'd play Carrington 1st & 2nd down and bring Kelsay on passing 3rd down distances.

he was only on the field for the first four wins since he was on ir before the fifth. i'd argue that the team's later performance can be attributed more to the failings of the offense than anything merriman did (or did not).

do you think he's still a difference maker?

At this point in his career, he's a shell. But sadly he was still the only guy on D last year who commanded special attention from the offenses. From what I saw in preseason this year, he certainly did not play his way off the roster, so I'm guessing there were other reasons for his release. Looking at the body of work so far, Bills could do much worse than bringing him back on pure playing ability.

But the real issue, I think is that the current defensive scheme doesn't have a spot for a pass rush specialist. Funny, huh?

Merrimen won't come back. He is on record as saying that he will only go to a 3-4 team. He even refused overtures from the Niners because they play a 4-3.

Link?

All I find are stories like this:

"The 49ers were in the market for an OLB after Clark Haggans was suspended three games for violating the NFL's substance-abuse policy. They kicked the tires on Merriman, but int he ned chose to go with linebacker Eric Bakhtiari. (yardbarker)"

"If there's any team that could help Merriman, Jim Harbaugh's crew would be it.

The bad news: The 49ers signed linebacker Eric Bakhtiari instead. NFL.com"

I'm pretty sure Meeriman would accept the position of "Taint Cleaner" for the 49ers or any team that would have him.

We need someone since we only have 3 healthy DEs and 3 healthy DTs right now. If that’s all we have this weekend, our D-line will be dead tired by the end of the game. At the very least, I think Merriman would light a fire under this team.

But who do we cut to make room? It’s not like we have 4 QBs, a kickoff Specialist or 4 RBs on this roster. Oh wait…

Sure, why not

If he doesn't work out it will be fine cause he will probably end up on IR after the first game he gets into and they can replace him

IIRC, Anderson was just placed on IR, no need to cut anyone now

Amazing how us fans clamor to keep the current players or get old players to come back. Hey, I like to play armchair GM just like the rest of us. But PPPP-Leeeeezzee.

All the crying when ( fill in the blank left ), only to see those players go nowhere fast.

Getting rid of Lee Evans, Moorman, Travis Henry, Merriman, (the list is long) was such a bad idea and locker room killer .........is more or less proven to be a good idea when NO TEAM in the NFL really wants them.

And yes I know Moorman is still on the Cowboys...for now.

Damn. I wish we still had Maybin. We need DE's and he is such a speed guy and had 6 sacks last year blah blah blah.

Someone on twitter asked him about that the other day and his response was that he " is not a DE in this league"...from Merriman himself...

True.

But he's not many things in the league right now.

I blame Ralph for this thread. It's so sad.....

Here's the link. Only interested in 3-4 teams.

“Yeah, we’ve spoken to several teams, a few early on right after the release in Buffalo that were a 4-3. We just felt that wasn’t best-suited for me to go back in that defense and play defensive end again,” Merriman said. “We’re just waiting for the right opportunity to play in the 3-4 scheme that I’ve been playing my whole career.”
