He had a couple good years when ray rice was there and hasn't done much since in an absolutely terrible conference. I'm sure its not easy recruiting to NJ and he is very successful for Rutgers but wow. I'll go on record as thinking this will not work out at all. The Big East isn't a horrible conference, it does have alot of smaller schools, but if you look at the bowls, the big east teams usually do well against supposedly superior competition. I strongly disagree. Bowls mean nothing as they happen so far after the season to matter for me. Once Miami and Va Tech left there was no power team/teams in that conference. Routinely struggling to make a BCS bowl is not a good conference. They are behind the SEC, Big Ten, Big 12, Pac 12, and prob ACC (yes I did see what WVU did to Clemson see my above statement). 6th out of 6 conferences makes you terrible in my book. All that said its official. Schiano and his 68-67(! no idea it was that bad) record has been named the new coach per ESPN text. Link to comment Share on other sites More sharing options...

It was his for the taking and has a major pipeline of blue chip prospects always ready to come in. Just like Buffalo, good luck in Tampa... I live in NJ and in the 90's and early 00's Rutgers wasn't a big time program or really anything as far as football was concerned. By the second half of the last decade Rutgers was in bowl games almost every year (From 2005-2011 they were in one every year except 2010). They were ranked 12 in the 2006 season and won 5 out of 6 bowls they were invited to. They became a legit and respected college football team. You might say that his 68-67 record isn't something to brag about but considering that in his first 4 seasons the team was 12-34 that't a remarkable turnaround. Rutgers never ever produced a 1st round pick in the NFL in its entire history until Schiano's tenure (Kenny Britt being the first one while Anthony Davis and Devin McCourty being two in the very next year). Now I can't say wither or not Schiano will be the guy for Tampa but lets not undersell what he did with Rutgers at all. He completely turned around that program. Granted if I were a Bucs fan I wouldn't be thrilled about the hiring. But as much as I hate Rutgers I can't say enough good things about what he did there. Maybe Schiano can actually coach--he did well at Rutgers, which, to be kind, doesn't exactly recruit from the same pool as, say, Stanford. biggerdaddynj Posted January 26, 2012 Share Posted January 26, 2012 Jersey boy too checking in too--although I know it's not a measure of a college coach's success and means nothing at all to most fans, Schiano's teams have always been in the top of the nation with their academic success and graduation rates (something his bashers have always ignored). This past year they were #2 in the nation under the "Academic Progress Rate" and #7 under the "Graduation Success Rate"--#1 for state schools. That's not too shabby when considering he did this while taking one of the nation's worst programs and turning it around (we actually made it to bowl games and won--we're also very well represented in the NFL). Though I'm no expert on coaching, I find it hard to believe that this doesn't mean something. Seems to be a pretty good reflection on the man. We'll miss him. This ruined my day. Lou Saban died 2 years ago, so probably not doing too well. Nick Saban washed out of the NFL--he's found a nice home at a top program. Miami has been irrelevant for years.
