July Movies: Harry Potter 7B, Captain America, and Cowboys & Alien

Recommended Posts

With "Transformers: Dark of the Moon" set to reign supreme over the 4th of July weekend, the second half of this year's mighty Summer Season is set to continue the onslaught of mind blowing special effects filled tent pole films. Sequels have been huge this summer and this month there is one sequel that looks to tower over all the others as it is the ending to a beloved and highly profitable franchise.

That movie is "Harry Potter and The Deathly Hollows Part 2". The end begins as Harry, Ron, and Hermione return to Hogwarts to find and destroy the final horcruxes. But when Voldemort finds out about their mission, the battle we've all known has been coming -- Harry vs. Voldemort -- looms large on the horizon. And who will triumph? The full scale action filled Harry Potter movie we've been waiting for, has finally arrived. In a year that celebrates the 10th anniversary of "Harry Potter and the Sorcerer's Stone" the movie, everything comes full circle for this franchise to end. Thanks to this and the Lord of the Rings franchise, fantasy has become a big genre in movies today. Let us hope that we will see more of this genre in the near future. Starring Daniel Radcliffe, Emma Watson, Rupert Grint, Ralph Fiennes, Michael Gambon, Alan Rickman, John Hurt, Helena Bonham Carter, Jason Issacs, Tom Felton, Maggie Smith, Jim Broadbent, David Thewlis, Julie Walters, Emma Thompson, Timothy Spall, Robbie Coltrane, & Gary Oldman.

Paramount & Marvel complete the major quartet cycle of the Avengers with "Captain America: The First Avenger". After being deemed unfit for military service during WWII, Steve Rogers volunteers for a top secret research project that turns him into Captain America, the Sentinel of Liberty -- a superhero dedicated to defending America's ideals. His first mission: to combat the Nazi propaganda effort headed by Johann Schmidt, also known as the Red Skull. After this "The Avengers" countdown will begin as it will kickoff next year's Summer Season. Starring Chris Evans, Hugo Weaving, Stanley Tucci, Tommy Lee Jones, Natalie Dormer, Hayley Atwell, & Samuel L. Jackson.

Daniel Craig and Harrison Ford team up for Universal's "Cowboys & Aliens". In Silver City, Arizona, Apache Indians and Western settlers must lay their differences aside when an alien spaceship crash lands in their city. While this movie looks to be a lot of fun, the pairing of Craig & Ford alone is enough to get people excited. Also starring Olivia Wilde, Paul Dano, Sam Rockwell, Clancy Brown & Keith Carradine.

Universal adds lighter fare as Tom Hanks directs and co-stars with Julia Roberts in "Larry Crowne". Unclear of his next steps after losing his job at a big-box retailer, Larry Crowne enrolls at his local college, where he finds a niche among the school's community of outcasts, and a connection with a teacher who has lost her passion for life.

There are plenty of other comedies to go around this month.

In "Horrible Bosses", three friends make a pact to rid the world of their respective bosses. Starring Jason Bateman, Charlie Day, Jason Sudeikis, Kevin Spacey, Jennifer Aniston, Colin Farrell & Jamie Foxx.

In "Crazy, Stupid, Love", a married guy tries to balance handling a crisis with his wife, attending couples therapy, and maintaining his relationship with his kids. Starring Steve Carell, Ryan Gosling, Julianne Moore, Emma Stone, Marisa Tomei & Kevin Bacon.

In "Friends with Benefits", While trying to avoid the clichés of Hollywood romantic comedies, Dylan and Jamie soon discover however that adding the act of sex to their friendship does lead to complications. Starring Justin Timberlake, Mila Kunis, Patricia Clarkson, Jenna Elfman, Richard Jenkins & Woody Harrelson.

There is also a good amount of family movies as well.

Disney continues to bring back traditional 2D animation with "Winnie the Pooh". While out looking for some honey, Winnie the Pooh is pulled into a quest to save Christopher Robin from an imaginary culprit. Starring the voices of Jim Cummings, Craig Ferguson & John Cleese.

Kevin James stars in "Zookeeper", a group of zoo animals decide to break their code of silence in order to help their lovable zookeeper find love -- without opting to leave his current job for something more illustrious. Also starring Rosario Dawson & Leslie Bibb.

In "Monte Carlo", Three young women vacationing in Paris find themselves whisked away to Monte Carlo after one of the girls is mistaken for a British heiress. Starring Selena Gomez, Leigton Meester & Katie Cassidy.

Finally in "The Smurfs", the little blue creatures of Smurf village move to New York City after the evil wizard Gargamel chases them out of their mushroom-like homes in the forest. Starring Hank Azaria, Neil Patrick Harris, Jayma Mays, and the voices of Jonathan Winters, Katy Perry, Alan Cumming, George Lopez, Paul Reubens, Jeff Foxworthy, Kenan Thompson, B.J. Novak & Wolfgang Puck.

Harry Potter 7(b) --- I've never read the books... just watched the films, so a certain part of this film had me a little :o . Wow. What a way to send it out!

This was a top notch production from the first to the last. So many stars put a turn into this, and several got their beginnings. Nice to see it come full circle and with an immensely positive ending.

After LOST ended last year with Jack Shephard dying with Vincent at his side  ... but simultaneously all of the characters re-uniting past death and being re-absorbed/? together into the Source/Heart of the Island/Light that's inside each person/?. I'm almost expecting the worst and the best from any series I put time into. After about a night of reflection on LOST, I was absolutely OK with how it ended. It totally fit that series, and totally fit the self-sacrificial nature of Jack's character that had been shown all along. Likewise, the ending to HP was so fitting to where it's taken us. No doubt that kids are going to be watching (and, hopefully, reading) this series a hundred years from now and still marveling at the world J.K. Rowling created and that the movies brought to life.

Thanks, Harry, Hermione and Ron --- it was a hell of a Nimbus 2000 ride.

Saw Harry Potter at midnight at a theatre (first time in a long time) to make a girl happy...paid off, too.

Anyway, it was actually kind of good even though I did not get a single bit of it. I'll watch Captain America when it comes out and anything else that looks good.

The ZooKeeper one looks like every other Kevin James or Rob Schneider movie...

Saw "Monte Carlo" on Thursday. A typical "chick flick" but worth the time.

The scenery from Paris and Monte Carlo were fantastic!! It wasn't produced by a

no name either. Nicole Kidman is the producer.

I really enjoyed "Captain America."

Marvel is just doing these head-and-shoulders better than DC (well, besides the Batman reboot... and that's due to Nolan).

Captain America was a fun movie. The World War II setting was great, Chris Evans was good, Tommy Lee Jones got all the funny lines and Hugo Weaving was good as Red Skull.

I agree with you on Marvel, they've got their act together and have been great on their delivery of their superhero movies. While DC just can't do anything (besides Batman) to keep up.

Bring on The Avengers!

Tommy Lee Jones is a native of Texas. I look forward to hearing those funny lines of his.

I watched Captain America last night and was not as blown away - however I have seen Xmen first class, thor, and Green Lantern in the last 4 weeks.

It will be interesting to see the big tie in to the Avengers - because the other movies tying in were pretty great!

Cool. I've been looking forward to that one for awhile.

Not a spectacular movie but an adequate popcorn flick. Could have been hugely better than it was given the premise, actors and director involved. But, worth a watch. Was quite cool that Ebert was sitting in our row during the screening.

I know Ebert is as sharp as ever, but I hate seeing him in that condition physically, particularly with his face. Poor guy just got eaten alive by the cancer :( I grew up looking forward each week to Siskel and Ebert, and I always had that awkward feeling whenever they got into a "fight" during the show...lol Ebert has always been my favorite reviewer, even though I don't often get to see his takes on films much anymore. I've pretty much started paying the most attention to Harry Knowles and a guy from AVS named Ralph Potts.

Also, I'm with you guys who really enjoyed Captain America. I thought Hugo Weaving was excellent, as was Chris Evans. And I had never heard of that female lead before, but she sure was purdy. My only gripe with the film was that it wasn't worth the extra money for the 3D version. I thought a copule of the 3D effects during the previews were fantastic, and the spider man trailer had a really intense 3D sequence, but the captain america film wasn't really impressive in that regard. I'm just about ready to resort back to seeing the 2D versions from now on unless reviews indicate a particular need to see the 3D one. But the film itself was really good, and I can't wait to see them all come together in the Avengers next year

BTW, this is unrelated, but if anyone wants to see a really good character driven drama, check out Barney's Version with Paul Giamatti. I finished it up last night and thought it was excellent acting and filmmaking.

The one thing about Captain America was that it was heavily British in the casting. And as much as it paralleled American involvement in WWII WRT commercialism about war bonds and USO-type stuff, wasn't that covered sufficiently in "Flags of Our Fathers"? Wasn't a big problem, and it served a common plot purpose, but.... That was Hayley Atwell, who's been in several PBS Masterpiece films as well as a pretty good turn in "Pillars of the Earth."

Agreed on "Barney's Version." (It's Paul Giamatti, BTW.)

The 3D stuff is really starting to annoy me. I'll always go to a standard showing unless the scheduling doesn't work out. The scenes where it is so blatantly obvious that they were designed for 3D really bug me. The couple times that Cap through his shield directly at the camera? Really, is that necessary? If they're going to use 3D, please come up with better ways of utilizing it instead of just going for that wow factor.

And since you mentioned the spiderman trailer, I assume those 3D sequences you mentioned are the ones where they show his point of view while swinging through the buildings. I hope that's a 3D thing, because it looks really cheesey if it's not. I'm going to get turned off by that movie really quickly if there's a ton of those shots, especially since I'll avoid a 3D showing like it's the plague.

Yep, the trailer was in 3D so that first person sequence ended up being pretty effective. It reminded me of those films they have at Disney World where you stand in the middle of a 360 movie and it puts you in the position of riding a roller coaster, driving a boat, racing a car, etc...kind of fun. I was watching the trailer, though, and I just didn't have any interest in seeing the peter parker/spiderman origin story again. I know it's been since like 2003, but honestly it feels like I just saw this with Toby Maguire. It will definitely be a rental for me...just not interested in seeing it in the theater.

I'm surprised how that got made considering the plight of the Will Smith/Salma Hayek dud "Wild, Wild West."

Then again, never discount Hollywood's penchant to keep stuffing genre-fusion plots into the cannon, firing, and seeing what they hit.

It got greenlight because Daniel Craig and Harrison Ford said yes. Stars determine (far more than the script, concept, director, producer) whether or not a film gets made.

That and Wild Wild West was 10 years ago. All the studio execs that even remember that movie have long been fired and replaced by the next crop.

Not that I'm cynical
