If you think it's been bad in Buffalo

Recommended Posts

Today, the Lions released Daniel Bullocks, the last player remaining from a 5-year stretch of drafts. That's 0-for-40. Here's what became of them all, and I warn you, it's not pretty. I'm not going to name names (to protect those involved), but see if you can match up the fates of those 40 picks with this draft history:

2002:

•Spent 4 solid seasons with Detroit. Traded for a 5th round pick. Hasn't played since 2007.

•Out of the league.

•Currently thriving in Denver.

•Never played an NFL down.

•Caught 5 passes in his 3 years with the Lions.

•Out of the league.

•Never played a down.

•Out of the league.

•Played one game in 3 years.

...2006

•Had a good stint. Traded.

•Injury-plagued. Released.

•In the CFL.

•Solid few years, after the Lions cut him.

•Never played a down.

•In the UFL.

•Out of the league.

And yet their cupboard is far better stocked than ours right now... they have a franchise QB (we don't), a top-tier WR playmaker (we don't), a capable offensive line (we don't), and drafted the best player in the 2010 draft (we drafted a third down specialist).

Yeah, they're friggin awesome!!!

You are such a whiney female dog. Bills suck blah, blah. The Bills suck with their 13 wins the last 2 years, while the Lions and their 3 wins in 2 years are loaded. Good work Professor Logic.

I wouldn't say that. In the race to the playoffs, we will surely beat Detroit. With good coaching, we coulda been there last year or even the year before.

The truth is, indeed, hilarious. Just some added support, since the Football Outsiders folks are pretty good at what they do:

9. Detroit Lions

It's a testament to the work of coach Jim Schwartz and general manager Martin Mayhew that the Lions are even this high. Then again, when you can gut the team you're given and get national attention for merely winning a game, well, let's hope you can find some new young talent to get in the lineup. Matthew Stafford was highly inaccurate as a rookie, which is a disturbing sign, but there are still loads of young talent to go around, especially on defense. Ndamukong Suh will get all the hype as a rookie, but the best player on the Lions' defense in 2011 will be safety Louis Delmas, who was the team's best player at any position as a rookie. DeAndre Levy also looks to be an effective middle linebacker going forward. Meanwhile, the offensive cupboard isn't totally bare: Calvin Johnson is a game-changing talent, while Jahvid Best has loads of potential and should combine well with Kevin Smith when the latter returns from his knee injury. If Stafford takes a big step forward, the Lions could move into the top three of these rankings in 2011.

Just out of curiosity - what's your basis for asserting that Stafford is a franchise QB? Is it his 61 QB rating? His 53% completion percentage? The fact that he played in 10 out of 16 games for the Lions last year?

Calvin Johnson is a beast, no doubt but for the sake of comparison:

Johnson (3 years): 3,071 yards & 21 tds. http://www.nfl.com/players/calvinjohnson/p...le?id=JOH088640

Evans' first 3 years: 2,878 yards & 24 tds. http://www.nfl.com/players/leeevans/profile?id=EVA454901

But many here insist Evans is not a #1 WR. I wonder if they think the same of Johnson.

Yes, all those things AND he heard an announcer clearly say that Stafford was indeed a franchise QB. Now let's go back to the great discussion of the mighty Lions and the lowly Bills. I hear the Lions got squat in the 3rd down specialist department. Other than that they look like a lock for the SB.

Any team that has flat-out sucked for eight years SHOULD lead the league in young talent. The fact the Lions are only ranked 9th in this category is further testament to their suckitude.

Former GM Matt Milan set this team back ages. What a shame because I really liked him as a player. He had no business being a GM. Old man Ford keep hanging on to him despite mistake after mistake. I believe it was one of his son's that finally had to axe him. Now they seem to be on the road to recovery. But indeed , they have been a worse franchise than us. However, that doesn't give me much pleasure.

I have to admit, while I do feel Evans is a legit #1 in the NFL, this comparison shocked me a little...

Yeah, but our unis are more manly.

Spiller will be much more than a 3rd down specialist, but we do have major holes.

The Lions have had what looks like 2 solid drafts in a row and they could be on the rise (though when you're #32 out of 32 there's only one way to go).
