While there are a number of late-bloomer QBs, those guys are almost universally late round picks who spent a few years on the bench. Most first-round picks who bust with their original team go on to fail with other teams, or at best, develop into marginal starters/decent backups. Campbell - Can't say whether or not he was valuable to the team that picked him up as he hasn't played for the Raiders yet.

 

JP - Was valuable to the Locos of the UFL. Yeah, the UFL

 

Leftwich - Decent backup with the Steelers 2 years ago. Started a couple games for the Bucs until their 1st round QB took over. Will most likely start the first 4-6 games for the Steelers

 

Carr - Developed into a decent backup, but not exactly what you want out of a #1 overall

 

Vick - Wasn't cut for poor performance on the field

Reasons why Bills should not sign Russell:

Fat

Lazy

Unmotivated

He has his money and no reason to play football.

I knew as soon as he was released these threads would pop up on this board like pimples on a teenager. I'll never understand why people think that bringing in other teams QB garbage doesn't have a down side. Like We'd bring this guy in, give him a chance to develop, and poof! He becomes and amazing QB....here...in Buffalo....with only one veteran to throw to...nevermind that he really has no talents that translated to the NFL.

 

I already think we're wasting our time trying to develop Brohm. I can only think of 2 QBs that were drafted onto poor teams that made it elsewhere, Steve Young and Brett Favre.

 

There aren't enough coaches on the team to develop what we have now, and to be perfectly honest, it looks to me like the current GM and coaching staff see enough in what they have now to keep the team competitive this year, and will make a move on one of the QBs in next years draft.

 

I certainly didn't think Tebow/McCoy/Claussen were the answer at all, and there was no way in hell any one of those 3 QBs were going to come in completely inexperienced and perform better than any of last year's QBs, which makes even more sense to me that they selected Levi Brown, a completely underrated QB that, to me at least looks a ton better than Tebow/McCoy/Claussen in his game time decisions, arm strength, and accuracy. Levi's footage on youtube, look him up, is very impressive, its almost hard to believe he appears that talented, has a throwing motion that looks a little bit like a Jim Kelly/Brett Favre hybrid motion, and a complete leader on the field that you can actually see it on the video clips. Can Levi compete for the starting job this year? no, but who knows in the future, of if someone gets hurt.

 

I was probably the only one who was relieved when we didn't waste a pick on them.

 

I can't wait till Denver releases Kyle Orton....(sarcasm)

 

quick edit - ohh yeah, I can't wait till Matt Cassel fails miserably in KC, he's another Don Strock in my opinion. The "lets bring him in" threads will be immediate.

Jury is out on a few, but I'd say leftwich and vick don't belong on this list. They were decent QB's for their original drafting teams. Not taking anthing away from your point though which is Jamarcus Russel is a complete waste of time and calories for this coaching staff, period unless they want to try him at Left tackle.

I also agree and think this was a very hopeful sign for the new regime... Yeah one of those guys might become good, but Brown has just as much chance and we might have gotten a list of quality players with the picks in between...

If he doesn't get his **** together rapidly, show some sign of promise, then cut him. If he shows any potential, dump Fitz. I would rather have a potential starter on the roster (even one who is quite frankly terrible to date) than a guy we know is at best a #2. Russell actually scored a 24 on the wonderlic, so he isn't a complete idiot. Is it likely he will develop? No. Worth taking a shot? Yes IMO.

 

 

Yes lets evaluate 5 QB's during training camp. The situation should get much clearer.

Pretty much. Amazing how people can delude themselves into thinking someone else's trash is going to be our treasure.

 

In my mind he is in the recycle bin. He would still be at Green Bay if they carried three on the roster for quarterback just like every other team. Remember, Green Bay tried to counter offer. It was Brohm's decision to split. So call him trash if you like. I happen to think he is salvageable.

I tend to think one of Gailey's primary benefits is to maximize the potential of a quarterback. I also believe Nix and Gailey are active and willing to look at any option out there.

 

If they're willing to bring him in I can't say I'd particularly mind - but their apparent total non-interest is a red enough flag for me.

Jamarcus Russell can have all the physical skills in the world, he might be the least motivated and laziest QB ever in the NFL. He makes Rob Johnson look like Peyton Manning when it comes to work ethic and dedication.

No way Leftwhich should be considered a bust. Campbell was decent and its hard to say based on football alone Vick was a bust for the Falcons.

Given the Bills QB situation, I really hope they at least kick the tires on where Russell's head is at. I wish we weren't in a position where someone like Russell at least has to be considered. If he can get himself in shape, I'm not sure why he isn't a better option than Brohm.

Theres no downside to taking a chance on him. He isn't going to cost alot and could probably be signed for a year or 2 at a veteran minimum because he isn't going to get many offers for a second chance. The guy does have some great athletic ability, something that can't be taught. Maybe this whole situation will help him change and he will get into better shape and become determined to show everyone they were wrong calling him "the greatest all time bust"

 

Everyone needs to calm down, no one is saying to give him a huge deal and gaurantee him the starting job. People are just saying to bring him in for a look, maybe he works out, and if he doesn't, let him go. he does have some talent, you don't play college ball and make it into the NFL without some talent.

 

as for the coaches, their job is to work with players, and they have coaches whose entire job is to work with the QB's and make them into NFL QB's. So instead of wasting their time working with trying to turn Russell into an NFL QB, they are supposed to waste their time trying to make something out of Fitzpatrick and Edwards? Its not like Russell came from an NFL powerhouse with great coaching and a great environment to exceed. Maybe a change of scenery would help. Although this is Buffalo, Manning (either one) or Brady could get cut right now and signed by the Bills and people would complain that theywere junk cause they were let go (an no, theres no way I am comparing Russell to Manning or Brady)

Oh, and as for Charles Rogers, I think the Seahawks just had him and someone else in with a bunch of other "draft busts" that they have given a second chance to.
