I'm sure people said the same thing about Rich Gannon when the Raiders grabbed him off the scrap heap in his mid 30s. And people said the same about Kurt Warner when the Rams grabbed him from the arena league. Nobody knows for sure. Sometimes guys just flourish in the right setting, My thinking is that we don't have a legit starting QB, we should explore every option to get one. Is Flynn guaranteed to be a success - NO. If he guaranteed to fail - NO. As Wayne Gretzky said "you miss 100% of the shots you don't take". The Bills have nothing to lose but a low round draft pick. If Seattle wants more, hang up the phone and move on. I honestly do not see a downside to this.

Statements like this are very frustrating. How the hell do you know that none of the QBs in this draft are ready to start? Nobody thought Wilson was ready to start last year, but he did and did well. That is why you try to acquire as many solid prospects as you can and let them compete for jobs. The best ones start. Trade for Flynn with a pick from 2014. Draft a rookie. Let them compete with TJax in the offseason and the best one start Week 1.

I would offer a conditional 2014 pick. Make it a 4th rounder that can be as high as a 2 if he starts and plays well. That seems fair to both sides. His contract isn't bad as a thought ($5.25 salary this yr, $6.25next with $2m in makeable incentives if starts and plays well). Seems like a reasonable risk for the Bills. Then I would still pick a QB in Rd2-3. I would be very happy with our QB situation heading into camp with Flynn, TJax and Nassib/Manuel. Open competition. Let the best man win. Hell, if they bring him in and he sucks, they cold cut him and not spend a penny (obviously they would lose the draft pick)

My theory on the draft and 2013 season
Maddog69 replied to Harryhood280's topic in The Stadium Wall Archives
A couple questions/comments for you: 1.) What do you mean "Common people don't fully understand how bad this QB class is"? Are you a scout or in some way better equipped to evaluate the class of prospects more than anyone else on this board? Or the experts who do have QBs listed with first round grades? 2.) There is no sure thing at any draft spot in any draft 3.) The Bills were forced into this position of needing a QB long ago. Basically when they allowed Fitz and Trent to fight it out for the job and never drafting a QB capable to taking the job. That to me, is fireable. Nix has had multiple years to find a QB and hasn't really even tried. -
My theory on the draft and 2013 season

Yep, he another hyped QB who has yet to prove anything (see Jake Locker who was the proclaimed "15yr starter/Sure HOFer) until his senior season. My point is that nobody knows what next year will bring. -
Waiting for Round 2 worth the risk?

And then the Jets take the QB you wanted and you are screwed. -
My theory on the draft and 2013 season
Maddog69 replied to Harryhood280's topic in The Stadium Wall Archives
So many people want to wait until next year to draft a QB. Who is to say that next years class will be any better. McCarron is supposedly a 2nd-3rd rd talent. Manziel may not come out. What if Boyd and/or Murray struggle this coming season or (god forbid) suffer major injuries. Next years class might not look quite so good in a year. This years class does not have the clear cut, blue-chip prospect. But it does boast a handful of very good prospects. We need to identify the best one for the Bills franchise and then go get him. If a blue-chip prospect QB falls in our lap next year, we might just end up with 2 good QBs. Wouldn't that be a nice problem to have? -
if he has his father's work ethic, he's got a chance. I agree with previous posters who have said he should look to go to a different team to carve out his own niche. Too much distraction and pressure if he were to try to come here and succeed.

Waiting for Round 2 worth the risk?
Maddog69 replied to 4merper4mer's topic in The Stadium Wall Archives
And a WR will do nothing if he doesn't have a QB to get him the ball. It's sort of a chicken/egg kind of thing. My personal opinion is to get a QB now. If they believe that one of these guys can be the face of the franchise, they should take him at 8. If they are not convinced, then I would support taking another position of need at 8 and taking a flyer on a QB later in the draft -

This draft is going to be really fun because of the intrigue around the QBs There seems to be a huge discrepency in ranking these guys. There seems to be no general consensus amongst the talking heads and the mock drafters as to which teams will go QB early (seems like Buffalo and AZ are both popular landing spots for Rd1 QBs, but I've also seen mocks with OAK, CLE, JAX and PHI taking QBs early). -
Gilmore has something to tell us

Point taken. 'stupid' was a poor choice of words. I just meant that it was most likely not something earthshaking or terribly newsworthy. Good for him if it some sort of charity thing. -

Fred Davis FA TE has dinner with Bills brass
Maddog69 replied to Scott_36's topic in The Stadium Wall Archives
I love Fred Davis, pre-injury. But an achilles is a huge injury for someone like davis who would need lateral quickness to get open. The injury scares me. I would only want to sign him if it was a multi-year (3-4) with low salary and incentives. I would have very low expectations in Yr1. I would not want to sign him to just a 1 year deal, as there is no upside for the team. If he does poorly, you've wasted your money. If he does well, he just used you as leverage for a new deal in UFA next summer. -
I don;t want to see them use 2 of their 6 picks on QBs. We have too many other needs. Take the best one you can at 8. Tjax as backup. sign a UDFA or veteran (Jason Campbell) for camp fodder.
-
This sounds reasonable, but what happens if the guys the Bills wanted is taken between pick #8 and whatever pick we acquire? This scenario only works if there are 2-3 QBs they like equally, and I just don't think that is the case. In my opinion, if there is a QB the Bills are interested in and feel can be our QB of the future, they have to take him at 8 and not play games. Finding a QB is a million times more important to the franchise than any other potential position that they could select.

what kills me most about the past 3 years
Maddog69 replied to BillsFan3434's topic in The Stadium Wall Archives
I'd say it is a bit early to label either of Washington's QBs as "franchise" QBs just yet. And they did spend 4 picks (3 first rounders) to secure these two QBs. Very risky. RG3 looks like the real deal if he can stay healthy and Cousins looks like a solid backup. Time will tell. -

My theory on why no FA action by OBD
Maddog69 replied to D521646's topic in The Stadium Wall Archives
It is possible that: 1.) that some of the players they liked and wanted to sign decided to sign elsewhere (Delaney Walker, Mike Devito, Levitre, Landry Jones and Donald Thomas were all reportedly of interest to the Bills 2.) some of the players they would like to sign are still available and have not chosen a new team yet so we just might get some of them -
Outside opinions ont draft's QBs
Maddog69 replied to OldTimer1960's topic in The Stadium Wall Archives
Brian Billick said that he has been doing more film study on Nassib and said that the more he sees Nassib, the more he reminds him of Dalton. Both need to work on progressions and deep ball accuracy. -
Quarterbacks & Rounds I’d be OK with us drafting them in
Maddog69 replied to simpleman's topic in The Stadium Wall Archives
This is exactly how I feel. It is up to the Bills scouts and Front office to identify one QB from this class that has the best chance of being successful and then do whatever it takes to get him. I don;t know enough about the prospects (and neither does anyone on this board, regardless of what they say), to be able to give an accurate opinion on this subject. I will trust the Bills to identify the guy and go get him. If he doesn't show any signs that he can be the guy, then do the same thing again next year. We need a QB before any of the other positions make any difference whatsoever.
