Ed falls into that category of decent player you can probably get by with, but not worth what the market will probably bear. The Bills are going to have to make good decisions on these types of players to effectively manage the cap. Knox is one of these types of players and hopefully he’ll begin to live up to his contract. The key is structuring these types of players’ contract such that you can bail out relatively painlessly.

Tom Landry took this to the extreme when he alternated Morton and Staubach on every play, using them as a shuttle system to call plays. That had to drive defenses crazy as they were very different stylistically.

The owners will never do this because the cap is in place to save them from themselves. If you allow a rich guy to have any advantage over other rich guys, they’ll get themselves into trouble because being good at competition is how they got to be rich guys. This is why the AFL-NFL merger came about - the owners were killing each other financially in spite of themselves.
