Agreed on the awful state of ST this year, and Farwell largely learning on the job. But it makes no sense for him to go to the mat for Foster. Roberts is a must keep on returns, Foster is a rotational non-factor. (Grant's TD was because Foster was totally blocked out of the lane).

The Bills have rotated a lot of players on ST, which makes the excuse that Foster is vital for playing very dubious.

Except he's not "the" gunner. Bills have alternated Foster, Coleman, Johnson, Perry & Neal on punt returns. There's absolutely no drop off in coverage when Foster is not the gunner. There were a few punts in the Pitt game where Foster didn't know where the ball was. PS, on the play you referenced, Foster needed to use his speed because he abandoned his lane thinking that Bolden would stay to the left. When Bolden saw Foster cheating, he cut it back to the right. You are correct that Foster's speed stopped a huge play. But if Foster stays with his assignment, there's no need for the heroics.

You're discounting the effect that good gunners have on the fair catch decisions. If the gunners don't get there in time you increase the possibility of a big return. Having said that, Foster is a mediocre gunner as well and he doesn't merit keeping an active roster spot considering his anemic offensive contributions this year.

Could be my personal interpretation, it appears that McD is hinting that Allen is still not where they would like him to be for the offense to function properly. I think it's evident in some of the hesitation that shows up on film where Allen doesn't quite trust the route and by the time he does, the window closes.

The sages keep bringing up Foster's value as a gunner. I've watched a few punt coverage replays. I didn't see anything special from #16. Perry and Neal certainly stood on film. What am I missing?

Using inverse logic, Josh Allen should be first team all-pro, because I'm sure that he leads the league in plays where the WR had the CB beat, but the QB didn't connect.

Could it be because Perry has only rejoined the team in mid-season? Watch the plays - Perry is much more valuable than Coleman.

His blocking vs Jets was superb. He made 2 key blocks to spring Yeldon for first downs. He also didn't shy away from contact and stood up a DL a few times. He also was on the kick coverage and some punts. They didn't use him as a gunner but as inline blocker. He didn't embarrass himself. Foster was passable as the gunner (Bills ST would be in much bigger trouble if Perry or Neal went down.) There definitely is something going on during the week where the coaches aren't fully comfortable in activating Duke for most of the games, because on Sundays, he delivers.

It's not Hap's argument but McDermott's, so take it up with the coach. As explained, he sits down with the three coordinators and they collectively decide the game day roster. Looks like McDermott places equal value to ST decisions, which is why Foster gets the nod over Duke. You can argue that it's the wrong decision, but that's his call. Roberts is a key ST contributor and McKenzie plays a big role in the offense. The only one who you may question sitting would be Foster and his contribution as a gunner, and ask why a physical Duke can't do that job? But clearly, after 6 months of practices, the coaches feel that he's not as good on ST as Foster.
