How long does it take an NFL head coach to reach his 1st Super Bowl?
MJS replied to Einstein's topic in The Stadium Wall
I'll say this: that first year of McDermott coming in and rallying a talent deficient team and getting them to the playoffs speaks volumes about his ability as a coach and leader to me, and it is one of the reasons I have faith in him. I think the fact that he did it with a franchise with such a long history of futility does add to what he did and should be considered as part of his resume of achievement. But saying "we can't change coaches because times are better now than they were when we were a historic laughing stock during the drought" is not a good argument. Not being terrible is not a good enough reason to keep him. I think there is plenty of evidence in favor of McDermott and Beane to speak to. The drought is not a part of that. -

Yes, but there aren't any measures of probability to win the Super Bowl. Odds are probably the best we can do. -

I'll be honest, I don't think the drought should have anything to do with keeping McDermott and Beane. Are they good at their jobs? Do they elevate the team? Do they put the players into position to succeed? Do they offer good leadership, direction, accountability, etc for the team? Are they capable of leading the team to the superbowl? Have they demonstrated the ability to do these things and win games, including playoff games, in the past? Those are the things that should be considered. We can be greatful that they were part of getting the Bills out of the drought, but the drought shouldn't have much of anything to do with measuring their success. I think it would be very foolish to move on from McDermott and Beane right now. That could change in the future, though. Hopefully, they are here for a long, long time and prove all their doubters wrong. -

I want the Bills to get there too. The fact is, there have been 20 teams in the conference championship game the past 10 seasons. Most don't get back to it. 5 got back to it twice, and 4 teams have been a cut above and gotten back to it regularly: New England (that's done now), Kansas City, San Francisco, and Green Bay (that's done now). I sure hope the Bills can get into that territory and be one of those handful of teams who get to the conference championship regularly. That would be awesome. I offer data, you offer insults. We'll allow the information to speak for itself. -

Superbowl expectations are dumb to begin with. Even the best teams in the NFL should not EXPECT a superbowl. Go look at the betting odds. Kansas City, the best team in the NFL with the best odds of winning it, has like a 14% chance of winning the superbowl, according to the odds. There is no such thing as a "good chance" of winning the superbowl. If you expected the Bills to win the superbowl the last couple of years, you were a fool. Hoping for a superbowl, or believing that it is possible, is one thing, but EXPECTING one? That is just unrealistic fan hubris. Fans need to stop viewing it that way. It is asinine, entitled, and pathetically naive, not to mention annoying. -

I've been looking for a video of that Thurman catch that is similar to the OBJ catch. -

Why is Tyrod Taylor not more revered in the Bills fan base?
MJS replied to ChronicAndKnuckles's topic in The Stadium Wall
Well, he had an OK run, but I think he is not well liked because of how it progressed and ended with him. He went from being a dual threat with a really pretty deep ball who could win you games, all while taking care of the ball, to a complete coward who would not throw the ball to open receivers or take any risk even when the game was on the line. And he didn't even run that much either, by the end. By the end he was just too hard to watch. And that's why McDermott benched him, because Tyrod was too conservative and the rest of the team could not overcome his risk-aversion to win games. But in totality, he is one of the better QB's in Bills history, mainly because there aren't that many good QB's in Bills history. It is easier to watch a gunslinger who turns it over too much but at least tries like Fitz did, than it is to watch someone who will never pull the trigger, even if they don't turn it over much. Also with Fitz, a big reason fans like him is because of his personality and the fact that he really loves Buffalo and continues to speak highly of it even years later. He's asking why. So, why is that, in your opinion? -
The comment was specifically about receivers, but you are always moving the goalposts. The Chiefs have one elite receiving option in Kelce, the Bills have one elite receiving option in Diggs. The rest are not as consequential of weapons. I think the Bills and Chiefs are in similar shoes when it comes to their receiving weapons. The Chiefs have a better oline, though, and Mahomes is more consistently elite than Allen. The Chiefs for sure have a better offense overall, I think. But they do not have elite wide receivers at all. That is one of their weak spots, and they have tried to address it in the draft and free agency with mixed results.

The Chiefs have mediocre receivers.
-
Wow. Quite the strong take, here. There's no reason to believe that.
-
The Bills could have won the superbowl those years too. They've been good enough for a couple of years now and they'll be good enough this year too. But so are other teams. We don't have the best QB. Mahomes is better. Burrow is close to or at Allen's level too, although quite a different style. I'd argue that Allen has a lower floor than both of them and maybe others as well, but his ceiling is as high as anyone's.
-
How is linebacker not the weakest unit? It is by far. The weakness of the receiving group is overstated.
-
Untapped potential? He is 30. This is his 9th season. He does not have any untapped potential. He is who he is: a decent WR.

And, I think most would agree that was exceptional. Most coaches do not get fired under those circumstances. There are exceptions, and this is one of them. And it usually does not work out. Sometimes it does, but often the team regresses.
