BN Blitz Daily Drive Podcast - Insider QB Info
NewEraBills replied to BrotherChazz's topic in The Stadium Wall Archives
I'm not sure how I got a chance to listen to that podcast now. After listening I closed out the browser and tried to listen to the Rosen podcast and it asked me for a subscription. Then I tried to open the Allen one again and now it's asking me for a subscription. -

He thinks Allen is: 1) A great leader - I'll respect this because I don't know. 2) More Accurate than given credit for - help me understand 3) Can make big-time throws 4) Keep plays alive 5) Makes Great decisions - help me understand. 6) Thinks after listening to this Bills fans can feel a little better - I don't and I'll tell you why. You're not showing me what you are talking about. What I want to know then is what am I missing when I look at Nebraska, Boise, Iowa games vs New Mexico, Hawaii? I see him as the same guy in those games but the talent level on defense was a lot better in the former three and they made him pay for some things. What I like most about Allen are his perimeter throws (specifically Outs and Comebacks, not quick hitches) and the Post route Author: Losing WR's plays into his comp percentage being subpar. He didn't have quality WR's. Me: But why then is his percentage .3 higher with the loss of those WR's? I agree with them on completion % as only a measure of accuracy. But him missing his WR's from the previous year doesn't hold as a reason for him having low completion percentage because it's .3 higher without those players. So I'm not sure why the missing talent is given as a rationale for his low completion %. The numbers do not support this reason. Author: His missed throws were downfield Me: A lot of them were but many were not. Me: I'm going to look at the film. Josh vs Iowa: Allen Makes several good throws here against Iowa (00:22; 00:37; 00:53; 1:37; 2:45; 4:01; 4:29; 4:45; 5:41; 5:46) BUT then there's these Vs Iowa 1:34; 3:34; 3:38; 3:55; 4:23; 5:00; 5:27; 6:03 and these 00:18; 1:08; 1:46-1:55; 5:27 I get it, his offensive line doesn't help him much but some of it is HIM. Josh vs Boise Before I get into the negative, I want to say that Josh was under pressure a lot in this game, particularly from his right side. He was able to move and make plays at times. That's what is impressive about him, other than his arm strength. But look at the following: 4:10 When I look at this play I scratch my head on the idea of good decision making. From what I can tell Allen stared down the right side the entire time. He never looks off the Safety. Watch his helmet. It's to the right the entire play. He never sees the FS over the top and he doesn't do anything with his eyes to move the FS out of the passing lane. He pump-fakes to the right and then tries to hit the TE down the seam but the FS is there. Doesn't help that he overthrew the pass a bit. To his credit, Allen made a couple of throws in this game where I said, other guys probably cannot fit the football in there because they do not have his arm strength. There was a sideline sizzler that threaded defenders to a WR on the sideline and then there was a sandlot play for a TD all based on his arm. Here's my thing, everything I noticed in these two games I've seen them in every game I can get my hands on of Allen: and I walk away saying he's the same guy in all of these games. Some defenses just have superior athletes to make him pay for his mistakes. To his credit, he was running for his life alot. I think he is probably a really good guy and a good leader, I don't know since I am not there first hand with him. There's probably a lot to like about his personality. I only use probably here because again I don't know. I just know from a football perspective I need some help understanding: 1) He's accurate 2) He makes good decisions 3) His completion percentage is a result of losing talent Below are the rest of what I watched on him -

Smart Coaches Will Pass on Josh Allen
NewEraBills replied to Irv's topic in The Stadium Wall Archives
I'm not an Allen advocate but I have hope for the guy. What I would say is that Smart Coaches will find out what throws Allen can make at a high percentage and they'll only ask him to master that initially before giving him anything else. I think if you take a very calculated approach of feeding him small doses, it will help his development. But if there is a coach who wants to throw him to the wolves right away, that's the coach that needs to stay away from Allen. -

I'm going to listen now but before I do, I'll say this, Allen's offensive line was very much like the Bills OL on the right side in terms of protection, namely BAD. I'll give it a listen now though. -
This is why sometimes I think arm strength, to some degree, is overrated. And I hate using arm talent and strength equivocally. I'm more of the mindset of can you put the football where you need to put it on time? To me, that's arm talent and anticipation. I'd take that over strength any day of the week. I'd also argue this is part of Brees' success. He doesn't have a rocket for an arm, although it's not a weak noodle arm either. But Brees can put the football where he needs to put it ON TIME. This is why I'm not too down on Rudolph. My biggest question with him is translatability. He played in a particular offense. Can he translate? I think the other stuff he can work on. Would I take him before Rosen? NO. Would I be angry with him as a Bill? No. Conversely, this is why I'm not very high on Allen but have hope for him. Allen has strength, but his anticipation is not consistent and at times is just downright bad.

To me, Plan A has to be get to 2 and draft Josh Rosen. Do what you can to try to land a deal to take him. I'd rather suffer a little bit WITH Rosen, than to have to face him twice a season as he marches the Jets offense up and down the field. Exactly. At least with Wentz there was no question to his leadership and playmaking ability within his conference. The same cannot be said for Allen. To Allen's credit though I don't think there is a better hash to perimeter passer in the draft. That's what makes his arm attractive. But his lack of anticipation struggles against Power 5 teams, accuracy concerns, completion percentage are all just way too much to factor when taking a top 5 pick. I honestly don't see him going top 5. Someone would have to be insane to take him there. The draft guys are hyping him up to go there, but there is only one thing to suggest this and that's his arm. Nothing performance wise suggests he should go in the top 5, hell even top 10. The thing I notice about Allen is this, whether it's the small schools or the power 5 teams, he's the SAME guy. The power 5 teams just have better athletes and they make him pay for his mistakes. The small schools don't have the guys to make him pay for it. With that, there's no way I could take him in the top 10 because he's going to be facing better athletes every week. People compare him to Cam, but Cam was a winner at Blinn or Binn lol. Then Cam went to Auburn and won again, plus he had 66% completion percentage playing the best defenses in college football. There was no change from Cam at JuCo to Auburn. He finally got it together. The same swagger, the winning mentality/attitude, the same penchant for putting the team on his back. This is why Cam got drafted early. I don't see any of those things with Allen. In any case we'll see how it goes but I just don't see Allen as a top 10 pick. My hope for Allen is that he becomes something great. But that's hope. If I'm selecting a top 10 pick I want a safer pick.

I think that was more because he was at a small school, NOT because of concerns about completion percentage and accuracy, footwork, learning when to take heat off of passes so on and so forth. Nobody had any concerns that would suggest Wentz was a developmental prospect/project. His biggest concerns was the small school and could he compete against top level competition. Another one is that he reads the entire field because he's in a pro-style offense. He may have been required to, but that doesn't mean he always did it. If you watch the Boise State game on the INT he threw to the TE down the seam, he never looked to his left. He hiked, looking right the entire time, pump faked and threw it down the seam to the TE, who looked open. But if Allen had of looked to his left he would have seen the FS playing over the top the entire time. No eye manipulation with Allen. The FS came in an picked it off with ease. Plus the pass had too much on it.

[Misleading Title]BILLS WILL TRADE BOTH #1 PICKS - -
NewEraBills replied to Punt75's topic in The Stadium Wall Archives
I don't get this at all. Really want the draft to be here and over with. This is getting way too lala landish. Why would you trade down when you can get better talent by staying put if you want to go that right. This is like saying well, I can pass on Derwin James because I can get Tre Flowers later. Yeah but you are going to miss out on a lot when you do. So just take James at wherever. Fans are making this thing way too complicated. Secondly, not only do you miss out, this makes no sense with what they've done already. You don't trade up to trade down. Who does that? -
Honestly, I don't see anyone in the modern ear that HAS done that. QBs, even the elite ones always have good talent around them. It's not like Brady has chumps. They don't have elite WRs because their system doesn't need them. But they do have an Elite TE as their system relies on it and their OL has above average linemen who can pass protect. And then the X factor is the system they run maximizes what they have. Brees missed the playoffs several years because he didn't have an elite team around him, same for Rivers. Ultimately, while QB is a very valuable position, it takes a team to win it all.

To be fair to Rudolph though Mahomes played in that same conference last year. Of course Rudolph doesn't have Mahomes' arm talent but they both played in the same conference and while we only have one NFL game of Mahomes and need a larger sample size, based on that first NFL game it doesn't appear that being in the Big 12 hurt Mahomes, who also lit up that conference from a similar style offense and great weapons at WR. Just to be clear I'm not making a case to draft Rudolph but I don't think some of the arguments about conference and talent are marks of certainty against him. At best they are marks of probability against him.
-
What's interesting is when I look at NE's offense, I think Rudolph is a good fit for what they already run and what he comes from. It's 5 receivers in the passing game, lots of dink and dunk routes like drags, with posts over the top, ie, high lows. Perfect system for Rudolph based on what he's coming from. Just my opinion.

We don't know this as a fact. We know what the draft media guys say, but we don't have access to team boards and how they grade these guys. I'm all aboard the Rosen or Mayfield trains but those two are my preference for the Bills. I don't know how BB and McDermott grades the QBs. I know how Kiper, Mayock, Brooks, Jeremiah so on and so forth do, but I don't know how the Bills, Jets, Browns you get the picture.

Frank Ragnow - Arkansas C - private workout
NewEraBills replied to PIZ's topic in The Stadium Wall Archives
Well I think it's more of all three can play Center or Guard. So drafting Ragnow actually is either drafting for C or Guard. -
I completely agree that's why I said QB is a problem area of the Bills and it has to get fixed. Ideally, they also need a guy they can plug in at RG and RT too along with a WR. But it's just too much to fix in this draft because MLB is also a problem that needs to get fixed. QB is priority #1 and to me OL and MLB are #2.

Sure he had the yards, but I'm looking at plays where he either didn't throw it and took the sack or he did throw it and because the coverage was what it was the WR had no chance. I'd be happy to have a good dialogue about prospects like Rudolph. I don't think he's bad, but I don't know where to place him either. Maybe it wasn't the Texas game. Let me go back and pull up the videos.
