Harrison Butker…oy vey…what a commencement “speech”
oldmanfan replied to eball's topic in Off the Wall
He speaks of vocation as being a wife and mother. Or husband and father. -

That does not make you a hater, no. Those are complex issues. There are those that demand transsexuals be eradicated. That is hatred. -

I have a perfect example of a great mom and career woman in my own home. I’m sure there are many on this board that would say the same. And when in his supposed clarification he said he wanted to harken back to a day when women were more concerned with babies than thoughts, that is not something I would call a little ham fisted. -

It doesn’t have to be mutually exclusive. That’s the point. Butker suggests it has to be. -

I will speak for myself. As the father of two girls who just graduated this week (one BA and one MFA), I can assure you they both are more than excited not just of marriage (one is engaged right now) but also of using the gifts and talents God bestowed upon them to use in their professional careers. He may hold up as a tenant of his strong Catholic faith that women should derive their pleasure from being wives and mothers (although that leads me to wonder what his stance on nuns is), but that does not mean all Christians agree. And the topper was when in his clarification of remarks he said he wants to return to a time when women were more concerned with babies than thoughts. That is beyond reprehensible to suggest women would be better off not thinking. I was also, as a scientist, offended by his stance on Covid which ignores the science of viral diseases. And as one who has friends who are members of the LGBTQ community I don’t appreciate his stance there. -

I’m Christian as are many of my friends and we find his words repugnant. -

Everyone is taking what I said out of context. All I said is that we should go back to a better time, like the 50s and 60s. When men were men, and women had more babies than thoughts. When the only 'Me too' movement was one woman saying she was ready for her 4th child, and another woman agreeing." This is Butker’s clarification. He had time to put this together, time to reflect and what he came up with is women should have babies and not thoughts. That is indefensible, I’m sorry. -

I have absolutely no evidence to support this, but I’m thinking Josh was sick of dealing with Diggs and wanted him gone. -

He has the right to his opinion as do you. I have the right to disagree. Welcome to America. -
THE ROCKPILE REVIEW - Receivers are a Dime a Dozen
oldmanfan replied to Shaw66's topic in The Stadium Wall
But I would say then that I’ve seen both Shakir and Kincaid do what you indicate in that intermediate zone. I haven’t watched Samuel much but could he have been in the league as long as he has without doing so? People keep saying we need someone who can go deep to open up the middle. You have 4 guys right now on the roster who fit that: Claypool, MVS, Hamler, and Isabella. It seems to me at least one of them earns a job. -

Gabe got open downfield and he didn’t have a great 40 time right? Shakir and Samuel are plenty fast enough and now you have MVS. One of the stats I have seen is that league wide only 1% of throws last year covered 40 yards or more in the air, so it seems this deep threat stuff is overblown. And getting guys open in the intermediate zones is about scheme, which is why I started a thread about this season being all about Brady. If you put out Coleman, Samuel, Shakir, Kincaid, and Cook that’s a lot for a defense to account for. Your last sentence says a lot. We have a star QB. This season is about Brady and his game plans and schemes so the great QB can thrive. -

“Bills have dramatically under-allocateddraft picks and UFA dollars to the position the past 7-8offseasons.” Your exact words and what I responded to. But now it’s just about this off season. As for the rest show me something that backs up vertical passing as winning playoff games, and what is considered throwing downfield. And if you think all the Bills are going to do is throw horizontal and short that’s silly. -

Don’t be silly now. Don’t act like Samuel, Shakir, Coleman, Kincaid and others are incapable of getting open. Given time guys will be open. And we have a better line that will give Josh more time. -

They traded for Diggs. Drafted guys like Zay Jones and Gabe and now Coleman. Brought in FAs like Beasley and Brown and Sanders and a number of others. Drafted backs that could pass catch like Moss and Cook and now Davis. Spent a first round on a pass catching TE on Kincaid and a lower pick on Knox. During this time they’ve also been working on upgrading the O line for Josh. -

In his clarification he said he wanted to revert to a time where women didn’t have thoughts. There is no way to spin his comments other than misogyny. It is not surprising this school invited him to speak as his views align with the school’s. It is also not surprising that many feel his comments were terrible. -

My fear is you get a guy that is like Diggs and demands X number of touches and complains if he doesn’t get them. A guy like that can diminish development of the rest of the WR group. Brady’s offense will ask Josh to go to the open guy. -

No. Of course you wouldn’t change your tune. What if Coleman goes for 1000 yards? If Shaw would have to change his tune, what would cause you to change your tune? Fair is fair after all. -

Beane’s job is to work with McD and his staff to put together a championship team. His job is not to appease fan’s desires for a single player. Again if he wants to add another WR fine by me. But he has already added a number of them and expects the competition to yield the right guys. -

I can seriously think that because I respect guys like Greg Cosell, who examine the game way more than I do. And they say Diggs was not an elite (or whatever you want to say is a “#1# WR ) last year. You are so fixated on one thing you’re not seeing the forest for the trees. We have a star QB. They have added linemen to protect him the past several years. They added a good RB in Cook, they added Kincaid. They added Coleman and Samuel this year and Shakir has come along. They did this while not overpaying for Davis as an FA, and moving a guy in Diggs who is getting older and according again to folks whose opinion I respect fell off last year. I recall Bill Walsh saying it’s better to get rid of a guy a year too early than a year too late. That applies to Diggs in my opinion. And while I have no evidence, I suspect Josh knew about it and wanted the headache of Diggs gone. If Beane decides he wants to add a guy you are beating the drum for fine by me. But everything he has said indicates he won’t. And yes I think Shakir can be as good as Diggs was last year. Or Samuel. And if a guy like Davis gives us a better run game, or the second round safety is a stud, or the DE from Troy gives us an edge rusher then this draft will be a good one. On an NFL team defining good or bad based on one player applies to only one position: QB. And we have one of the best.
