  1. The Bills would be in a much better position if young guys like Allen, Foster, McKenzie, Teller, Milano, Edmunds, and Phillip's mature enough to contribute to the team winning games than tanking and getting a lower draft pick. And the obsession with getting a top 3 or 5 draft pick in the NFL is pure idiocy. Teams that draft well find all-pro talent throughout the first two rounds of the draft. Tre White was the 27th pick in the draft. Edmunds was the 16th. Calvin Ridley was the 26th overall pick. This isn't the NBA or NHL, there is no need to tank in the NFL. If the Bills finish 8-8 but have a young core of players who are improving enough to win NFL games, they will be in a much better position than if they have a train wreck ending to the season, where the young players prove to be worthless, and wind up with the 3rd pick in the draft.
  2. No, but this isn't a cover 1 team. The design of the defense protects CBs, so you don't need the equivalent of a franchise QB at CB to have a successful defense. McDemott can screw up the CB2 position the next 5 years, and the Bills could still have a top 5 defense each of those years.
  3. So he's a legit NFL WR1 or WR2 on a playoff caliber team? I don't think he's there just yet.
  4. For me, being an optimist is hoping that Allen, Foster, Jones, and Teller play well enough to be considered bonafide starters for next season. And McKenzie establishes himself as the returner who can contribute to the offense every now and then. Anything else is gravy.
  5. Agree. Let's just be happy that the Bills have finally found a capable backup. It's an important position, as we have all witnessed this season.
  6. YOU PLAY TO WIN THE GAME!!!!! I can't believe that 25% of Bills fans are dumber than Herm Edwards.
  7. They have screwed this up beyond belief, but if Allen is the guy and plays well for 10-12 years, it won't matter. Taking so long to stumble their way to Barkley probably cost them a couple of wins this year, but if they cut Peterman and keep Anderson as an Allen mentor, they can pull this thing out for next season.
  8. Attitudes will change when you stop trotting out the worst QB in modern NFL history week after week. This team is border-line legit when it doesn't turn over the ball.
  9. It was good to see that after 5 tries they seem to have the backup QB position heading in the right direction. And after season and a half it was good to see some speed at the WR and KR/PR positions. So better late than never. With the bye week and Allen returning, maybe they can start building and adding to their defense success. Win as many games as possible, target the 10-15 spot in the draft and trade that down for as many day 1 and 2 picks as possible. Build the offense next year and let the defense do their thing.
  10. Whaley didn't make a single pick in 2017, it was all McDermott. Whaley stuck around playing the role of scouting director, providing data to McDermott to make decisions. Allen could be successful, but he was also much more expensive. The Bills offense could use a couple of extra 2nd rounders on the roster right now. In the end, if you want to build your team around great QB play, you need some one other than a defensive minded Head Coach overseeing his development.
  11. I think this should be reversed; Peterman cost McD a long and fruitful career. Generously, McDermott has one more year to fix a spectacularly awful offense with multiple holes and too few draft picks to plug them. If he can't pull off that miracle, he's done in Buffalo. And when he's on the job market, he'll be known as the guy who stubbornly, repeatedly tried to prove that the worst QB who ever took a snap in an NFL game was a starter. No GM or owner will ever give him a chance to run an NFL team again. He'll be hired as a DC, but his long and fruitful career as a HC would be over.
  12. The thing that bugs me most about the Watkins trade is the timing. They could have made that deal at the deadline instead of preseason. Who knows if they would have changed their minds, but seeing if Watkins could fit into the offense would have been better for the team. And the market might have been better for Watkins after other teams played a few games (thinking of the first round pick Dallas gave up for Cooper).
  13. Peterman threw an interception on a one yard pass to a wide receiver. The defender jumped the freaking route. Let that sink in, because there's a whole lot of suck in that play, at multiple levels of the organization. Owners, Coaches, GM, offensive line, WR, and QB. In today's NFL, a defense plastered a wide receiver (on the defensive side of the 50) at the line of scrimmage, because they know the Bills don't have the play design, or execution, or talent to complete passes 2 yards off the line of scrimmage. And instead of driving down on the weeds on this one, let's just say that anyone involved in this play is not NFL caliber at their position. The Pegulas should just spend $90 million on a giant ice sculpture of themselves to be built in July at the 50 yard line of New Era so we can all watch it melt, because that be money better spent than giving it to the current regime trying to build a modern NFL offense.
  14. So all the "process" people, you're ready to give 80M in cap space and 10 draft picks to rebuild the offense to a couple of guys who: - Traded a 3rd round pick for Kelvin Benjamin - Traded UP to draft Zay Jones - Named Nate the STARTER to open the season - Passed on Mahomes and Watson in last year's draft - Are trying to develop a franchise QB with coaches WHO NEVER PLAYED QB - All ready promised McCoy, who is washed up and expensive, a spot on the 2019 roster - Don't have a RB under the age of 25 on the active roster - Knew they were losing 3 starting l O--limemen before the draft and did nothing to replace them And there's more, but the point is, what have McDermott or Beane done to make you believe that they will be able to use the cap space and draft picks to build an actual NFL offense?
  15. The only person dumb enough to keep Peterman on an NFL roster is McDermott, who knows nothing about offense in the NFL.
  16. They don't have to trot out one of the worst freaking offenses in the history of the forward pass NFL to trade down in the draft. The Bills should be able to load up on good offensive linemen and receivers with picks in the late first round, and second and third rounds. Finishing with between 6-8 wins while breaking a rookie QB would have been a good season, instead the offensive clown show that the fans have had to endure this season. Such a season would have them picking between 8 and 12. Which is more then enough ammo to trade down for more picks.
  17. How about each game you watch, you are seeing something historic. Historically bad, but historic nonetheless. Someday you can tell your kids, 'you think that guy is bad, you should have seen Nate Peterman. He was the king of the pick six.'
  18. He had McNabb who he picked 2nd in the '99 draft. They went to 4 NFC championship games and a Super Bowl. Not ultimately successful, but better than most. He didn't draft those guys you mention because he had McNabb. He picked up Mike Vick and Nick Foles at the end of his tenure in Philadelphia, and those guys put up impressive numbers for him. In KC he pulled Alex Smith off the trash heap and and Smith proved to be a serviceable QB under Reid. This isn't Voodoo. The moral of the story is that if you want to pick a QB in the draft, you need a guy who knows offense to make the right choice. Reid, for all his faults at game management and shortcomings on defense, understands better than most how to scheme an offense, and he understands the skills a QB needs to run his scheme. This is more than a crapshoot. There's a reason why McDermott has hit on the Bills top defensive picks the last two drafts. The guy knows his scheme and he knows the type of player who best fits it. Reid knows the same for his offense.
  19. Claiming that Bills fans are impatient and "millenials" (whatever the fxxx that idiotic label means) because they want to watch entertaining football after two (barely) winning seasons over the last 18 years is just mind boggling. It's like watching your team get its teeth kicked by Brady and Belichick year after year is some kind of rite of passage that has to be endured to prove your worthiness as a fan. The NFL is one of the top results-oriented businesses in the country, but we have to pay to watch sh###ty football for three years before we can decide if a coach is "good" or not. Look, after two years it's blatantly obvious that Beane and McDermott are close to being the worst offensive minds in the modern NFL, where offensive records are being set weekly. We know this from their actions in Buffalo, and we know this from their time in Carolina (imagine if Cam Newton played for Andy Reid). It's in their DNA for these guys to build a team that wins games 17-14. And in 2018, those types of teams fail. So, you want to wait another year to see what these offensive dullards do with 80 million and some 1st and 2nd day draft picks, fine. My guess is that they'll draft defense in the first two rounds and sign a couple of slot receivers and another 29 year old running back. They'll then put the offense out there with a game plan to eat clock and score 20 points. So, damn the definition of crazy and bring these guys back for that magical 3rd year. What you're going to get is not much different than what we got from the other prehistoric defensive minded coaches the the last 20 years of Bills' history.
  20. Some NFL teams have the GM at the top of the decision making tree (which is the way most of us probably think it should work), and some have the HC in that lead position (Patriots, Seahawks, Raiders). I think Pegula wants the HC to be the key decision maker, partly because he admires the way that Bob Kraft runs the Patriots. Evidence of this is that both his head coaching decisions (Rex and McDermott) were made with little to no input from the GM. When McDermott came in 'under' Whaley, McDermott placed him in a director of scouting role, where Whaley ran operations, but had no role in decision making. Beane looks to be playing a similar role.
  21. It's telling that the majority of teams who passed on Mahomes have defensive-minded coaches or have a 'settled' QB situation (Chargers, Titans, Bengals). Andy Reid, one of the best offensive minds in the NFL, was able to see the potential in Mahomes and traded up to make him the 10th pick. The Bears took Trubisky under Johnn Fox, a defensive-minded coach , but it's apparent that Mahomes is the better QB. Maybe the key to drafting a great QB is to have a more offensive-minded guy make the selection.
  22. I think Anderson actually has 'Orton-itus.' While Nate 'Bad Penny' Peterman has the luck of the Fitzpatrick!
  23. I think we're in alignment on the first point, but not as much on the second, but that's cool. Thanks for the discussion! ?
  24. But in this case, the defense is actually pretty good, with major investments made in it the last two seasons. The offense has died on the vine.
