Officiating is always a legitimate concern because it is so inconsistent. It is moreso because of the stakes not the opponent IMO.

Not from me you wouldn't when the Bills commit a penalty I call it a penalty. The Ravens got hosed a little in that the wrong penalty (with the bigger tarrif applied to it) was called. But it was a definite foul.

White committed a foul. I think it was holding / illegal contact and 5 yards rather than a spot foul but it was a foul. He had Coleman grabbed before Josh released the ball.

It's most aggressive compared to the mean response by NFL coaches in that scenario. Correct.

I think they want Aaron Glenn. But if he is off the market I think McCarthy is a possibility. Interestingly the three guys currently invited back for a second (in person) interview are: Glenn (tomorrow if the Jets don't hire him today); Mike Kafka (Giants OC, former KC QB coach) Anthony Weaver (Dolphins DC, was the Bills DL coach way back under Marrone and Pettine I think) EDIT: worth saying you can't second interview coaches whose teams are still live this week.

He has been a top 3 right tackle in football this year. If they were trying to extend him now he would be asking for somewhere between Lane Johnson's $20m AAV and Penei Sewell's $28m AAV because while Sewell has been out on his own, Brown has been in the Lane Johnson tier this year and that Johnson deal was signed two years ago. As it is the Bills have him at $18m AAV. It's an incredible bargain.

Yea I agree I am not sure he is a guy who can just look up from a tablet take in down, distance, score, clock, timeouts remaining and make a 2 second decision. I don't think that is who he is. He has to process in his kind of methodical manner.

I think it was just too much on his plate. We saw times last year where the offense was on the field and there were shots of the sideline and Sean's staring at a tablet. I think your HC needs his head up and in the game. I know lots of offensive HC's call plays but I think that's easier because those go / kick / punt decisions come on their side of the ball. They are invested in the game when they arise. Not many defensive HCs call plays successfully, even Belichick (who did it at times) had more success when he didn't. 5 of his 6 Superbowl wins in New England came when someone else was running the defense. And in the one where he was running the defense his offense could only muster 13 points. I just think it is harder to do both as a defensive guy because the key game management decisions generally come on offense.

I am conflicted on this. I'll explain why. 1) I did not think at the start of this season this was a Superbowl contending roster. My take was they were a playoff team, they'd be the class of the AFCE again, but they were not guaranteed to win a playoff game and might be as vulnerable as they have ever been in the wildcard round. 2) I think it is a huge credit to Sean McDermott, Joe Brady and Josh Allen in particular that they are where they are. McDermott has coached his ass off with this group of players, Joe Brady has been a brilliant hire at OC and Josh has played at an MVP level. 3) However, making a Superbowl, let alone winning one, is really, really difficult. Even when you have a great Quarterback. Some years you will get to the post season beaten up physically (2023) or mentally (2022) and it will feel like you are running on fumes. We just saw that happen to the Lions a few days ago. This is not the case this year for the Bills. Sure they have a couple of injuries to watch in the secondary but they are broadly healthy, they are here, one step away. 4) Baltimore had a great season. Lamar was an MVP level player. They had multiple all pros and yet they lost on Sunday and slid all the way back to the bottom of the mountain. They were two wins away from playing for a Lombardi..... now they are back to being 0-0. One of these two teams by Sunday night will be right there with them. The other will be one win from history - the Bills first ever Lombardi or the NFL's first ever threepeat. 5) I do think with a smart offseason the Bills have the potential to be a significantly more talented roster next season compared to this one. But that roster will have to survive 18 weeks and a playoff game or two to be where this group is right now. Seize the opportunity. This is as good a chance as they have had in my fandom. It is only the second AFCCG I can remember as a fan of about 23 years.... and the first one was against a team I wasn't sure we could beat. I now know we can beat Kansas City. The players know they can beat Kansas City. They need to leave every last ounce of everything they have on the field on Sunday to do it. This season has been above my expectations, it has been a fun ride we have played some really enjoyable games. It isn't a total failure if it ends here. But I don't feel like Sunday is a free hit. I feel like it is a great opportunity that doesn't come around that often. I admit I will be gutted if they lose. I will probably need a couple of days to get my head around it. Let's go Buffalo!

McDermott has been in the top 10 of this list most years and many times much higher. He was lower last year and honestly, I think it was because he was DC. I don't think the double hatting worked at all, and it affected his overall decision making. No surprise to see him back near the top.

What makes you think that? Glenn is obviously the favourite but if he goes to the Jets I think McCarthy is very much in play.

I think if the defense was even somewhat healthy we'd have beaten them last year. 2021 we should have beaten them. Hopefully this time.

I agree he was slow to adjust. But the Bills ran into some stacked boxes first half and churned yards out of it. I think the play calling on those two lost drives in the 3rd quarter could definitely have been better, but I don't think it was as bad as some think. And the one which I thought was a really dumb call - the tight end screen to Knox - watching back was a clear audible. Yep. Some of that was design but not all of it.

Agreed. It was a problem at the end if last year too and the Bills didn't address it sufficiently in the offseason. Cooper has helped a bit, but they seem to have got away from him. It's a credit to Josh and Joe that the offense has been as productive as it has given that limitation.

They did have deep shots called. They had two hard play actions in the third quarter that Josh came off and checked down to a back. Did they maybe come out still wanting to run a bit too much? Maybe. They had run it so well first half though I can see why they wanted to stick with it. But they did call plays to get the ball downfield. Josh came off deep shots and dumped off and he checked into screens.... I think you have to give Baltimore's defense credit and you have to ask questions of our receivers' ability to separate downfield.

He didn't even take an interview there. He did interview in the end with the Raiders and Jags but for me he was only ever taking New England or Chicago.

We got two bad spots. At the 2 instead of the 1 and then they marked Josh back another half yard after the 3rd down stop. Could have tush pushed anyway on 3rd and 2 but I'd have had to be inside 6 inches to do it on 4th down.

He isn't Josh Allen but he is better than he gets credit for. That team is too talented to be doomed. Would I be surprised if they went 10-7 next year? No. But they are not gonna be 6-11 or something like that. They are too well built, have too many good players. If I could have a do-over I'd change the Saints to McCarthy. I didn't know he'd be available at the time. Cowboys weren't on my list but they will flirt with Sanders and hire Kellen Moore.

That offense had Sewell and St Brown as rookies but didn't have Gibbs, or LaPorta or Williams. And Goff had only just got there. Sure, a bad coaching hire can hurt a unit: See Dorsey, Kenneth. But as long as they don't hire a dud they will keep rolling. Might not be quite as good as now but way too talented to stink. Brady did not in the event interview with the Jets. He took 3 interviews: Jacksonville, Chicago, New Orleans.
