I agree re. Moore. I got told by someone who was at that point still in the organisation Beane was heartbroken to let Gabe go and they suspected others had talked him out of paying him.
-
Believe me there is. Brandon Beane loves him. If he comes back that is a 100% Beane decision.

Who’s your defensive surprise of the year?

I mean he was nowhere near as bad in coverage as Bishop last year. That is why he started. We all hope Bishop has improved past Hamlin. But if he hasn't then he won't start. -
TJ Watt Speculation after Pickens trade (Nothing Official)
GunnerBill replied to SCBills's topic in The Stadium Wall
The next draft is also in Pittsburgh I don't think they saw Pickens as a core young guy in that building. I think they had decided they were not paying him. This cashes him in for a pick. -
Shakir #1 Kincaid and Palmer #2 & 3 in some order Coleman #4 Moore, Samuel and Knox #5-7 in some order

Wide Receiver Train Full Speed Ahead- CHOO CHOO!

I am not agreeing Walker was great but I agree on the rest. -
Yea, Bech and Thornton are rookies. Bech is an inside/outside flex guy and Meyers is the same. Thornton is EXTREMELY raw and is a package player as a rookie to me. He runs two routes. They don't have a single serviceable true outside vet receiver.
-
That's true. The place that immediately jumps out to me is Vegas who have basically zero established outside receivers.

I think it is a little bit higher than 50-50. Really depends what his market is but coming off a bad injury last year and the timing of this release (i.e. after teams have put together their rosters) the chances are he takes a 1 year, prove-it type deal. The Bills and Beane in particular loved him as a guy and a teammate.

Matt's still on the list, but losing Stef and JoPo in a single offseason was a blow.

Bills 4th Round Pick : Deone Walker - DT - Kentucky

I think the back probably plays a part in that (although his pad level was concerning even in 2023). -
Who’s your defensive surprise of the year?

I think TJ Sanders is going to be a beast even in limited playing time. When Ed started to play well down the stretch last year the difference in our defense was noticeable and when he came off the field the interior penetration was non-existent. I think signing Ogunjobi and drafting Sanders tells you Beane knows that. I can well imagine an offensive line that has spent all game trying to hold off Ed just relaxing slightly thinking the job is done and then TJ eating. TJ to out sack Ed in fewer snaps is definitely one of my bolds for next year.... and the board will totally over react as a result with "cut Ed he is a bum!" But Milton Williams had more sacks than Jalen Carter last season. It doesn't mean he is better. There is just an opportunity for those rotational guys when the first choice rush package has worn a line down. -

He still does NFL Locked On Scouting with Kyle Crabbs. But I listened to a couple of episodes this year and they are definitely doing fewer really detailed breakdowns on prospects than the used to. To be honest it feels a it like they have mailed it in and are keeping going for the sake of keeping going because the Locked On network wants them to. It's a shame because when they were part of The Draft Network they did some really good stuff. I mean that place's demise was pretty predictable - running an expensive draft website with full time employees when you are really only driving serious levels of engagement 3 to 4 months of the year - which affects your advertising revenues etc - was never going to be straightforward. Even before you get into some of the personalities tied in with it. But it definitely feels like post the collapse there Joe has turned his attention away from the draft stuff and on to Locked On Bills. -
Two takeaways: 1. I love TJ Sanders but the last two times Beane has taken someone in round 2 and then said "we'd have considered them in round 1" were Cody Ford and Boogie Basham..... let's hope third time lucky! 2. Can I see some more of Jordan Hancock with his shirt off please? I was a bit down on Bills crushes in 2024. Glad to see Brandon restocking for me 😄.

The Texans beat us right at the end last year despite Josh playing terribly and completing 9 passes in the entire game. If we get average Josh Allen that day, not even elite Josh, then we win the game. I fancy us strongly to turn that around.

Who is our worst match up in the AFC as of now?
GunnerBill replied to Mikie2times's topic in The Stadium Wall
Honestly it is close for me as to whether I'd rather play BAL in BAL or KC in KC. KC is a mental roadblock for the Bills in the post season. But Xs and Os wise I think the Bills matchup pretty well against them. BAL is a tougher Xs and Os matchup for us. The things they do well are exactly the things we do less well. Now if it is a home game.... I'd rather play Baltimore than KC every time. But on the road I genuinely think it is mighty close and I might fancy the Bills to finally pull a tight one out in a strategic battle with KC than I do to them outpunch the Ravens on their own turf in the playoffs. -

Interesting, I think the Houston D is the opposite of physical, especially in the middle. I think it is fast and talented. They have playmakers in the secondary and their edge rushers are dangerous. I think their weakness is the middle of the Dline and the linebackers. That is where you can expose them if you can get physical. That and their offensive line are the weaknesses of that team. -

TJ Sanders..... but yes to everything else. -
I doubt we go unbeaten at home again but really I don't know how anyone gets to Baltimore and Cincinnati as "losses" when "toss ups" is an option. The way I see the home schedule is: 3 divisional games (should all be wins); 2 NFC South games (should both be wins); the Bengals game where I lean towards a win; and then we play 3 of the other teams I consider among the top five in the NFL - Bills, Chiefs, Lions, Eagles, Ravens - and those three games against the Chiefs, Eagles and Ravens are toss ups. But what would surprise me is if the Bills lost all those toss up games. That just hasn't happened in the Allen era. They will find a way to win at least one of those three games. And their road schedule I think they have a genuine chance to go 8-0. I think this is one of the Bills better #1 seed opportunities of recent years.

Yea I don't think it was entirely off field. Tucker really struggled in 2024. Would they have shown more patience and loyalty if the off field stuff wasn't in the background, and given him a chance to bounce back in 2025? Perhaps, but it isn't crazy to say this is a football decision. Even if that is only partly true.

Beane does have final say over the draft. You should watch his pre draft presser this year. He explained their process very clearly from building the board the board to the involvement of the coaches to the final decision. It was almost exactly how it was described to me by someone who used to work for the Bills. McDermott doesn't make draft picks or demand certain players. Your suspicion that defense = McDermott is wrong I am afraid. Where however he does deserve some blame is on a miss like Kaiir Elam. Because for the guys near the top of the Bills board the coaches have watched those guys and have given at least some level of reassurance they can be fitted into the scheme. With Elam I never thought that was likely and it never worked. That is the role the coaches play - after the evaluation but before the final board is set - do these guys fit our scheme. Where they have clunky scheme fits there is an element of McDermott and his staff sharing the blame. Where it is just bad talent evaluation, that is Beane. The team building strategy is also Beane. Undervaluing wide receivers is him. He says it repeatedly. He believes Quarterback, then trenches. It is the Carolina model he grew up with. Quarterback and then defensive front 7 was very much the way the Panthers drafted. They also took three round one running backs while Beane was there... luckily he hasn't done that yet. -

He doesn't "answer" to McDermott. But he isn't an all powerful GM in the way Howie is. The Bills have a flat structure. Sean and Brandon both report to Terry. In Philadelphia Howie is in total control. The Head Coach reports to him. But I still don't think that is the reason we draft less well. I just think Howie is better at his job and he has a hell of a staff around him. Alec Halaby in particular - the assistant GM - is a superstar. His self built analytics model is a critical piece in the way they team build. -
They've already paid him and there is no way of getting out of it until after the 2027 season. I hate the big trade up slightly less than you for that exact reason. They don't need those picks for a QB. Lawrence is their guy for at least the next 3 seasons. If they see Hunter as a receiver first then it's kind of a final swing at the fences in terms of putting the pieces around Trevor to help him succeed. It might be throwing more assets at an already sunk cost but if the QB is no good they are not gonna be a good team the next 3 years anyway.

Elijah Moore Visiting the Bills today (Update: Signed!)
GunnerBill replied to bills742's topic in The Stadium Wall
Because it backs the defense off to make the throws Josh does like easier. Im not sure Palmer is the deep threat you make out. He can do it but he is more of an intermediate route runner a la Diggs than a dynamic deep guy.
