I think the bigger reason for the "vaccine cause autism" is that the Wakefield study was actually well accepted initially because it was good honest science. The findings are flawed because they did not rule out other variables and it was not large enough but there was no money to be had by the findings, at least that I have been made aware. The other thing with the Wakefield study was not quickly proven wrong because a study such as that takes time and the attention faded by then.
