The draft is such a dynamic process...lots of things happening at once. As soon as you get to the 6th and 7th rounds I'm sure it's a constant analysis of who you believe you need to draft vs. who you believe you can sign as an UDFA. Clearly the Bills like Sills' potential, but it's just clear they didn't like it enough to pass up any of the other guys they selected.

Buffalo Bills: Embedded season 2 - new episode Sun. 8/11
eball replied to BillsFan4's topic in The Stadium Wall Archives
That's a question asked about five times already in this thread, and nobody knows the answer. Also -- are people actually critiquing and criticizing Kyle Williams as narrator? Geez, people, get a grip. He was excellent, and clearly has an excellent sense of humor. -

Buffalo Bills: Embedded season 2 - new episode Sun. 8/11

@Alphadawg7 I'll add one -- seeing the interaction and communication between Allen and Dorsey. Do you remember one highlight last season in which David Culley appeared to be working with Allen? -
Understatement of the year. To be sure, Allen needs to improve his pre- and post-snap reads, but let's remember he was essentially #3 on the depth chart until he was thrown into the fire. After DA came in he showed progress over the last six weeks and we're all hoping that continues now that he is "the man" and will get all of the reps. On one of the Embedded episodes released yesterday I was very pleased to see and hear the level of communication/coaching going on between Allen and Dorsey. I believe the benefits of this are multi-faceted, as it should allow Daboll to focus on other aspects of the offense when it seemed like last year he had to be so personally involved with Josh.

RD 3, Pick 74: RB Devin Singletary, Florida Atlantic
eball replied to SDS's topic in The Stadium Wall Archives
Beane did not do this. They had Singletary graded much higher than the next best available player on their board. You disagree with that grade, fine, but there is no evidence they panicked or reached to draft him. In the Bills' room it was literally a case of either taking him or ignoring their own evaluations. -
Douglas is highly regarded...but he's not a coach. The hiring of Gase is still a head-scratcher. Gregggg Williams is only a legend in his own mind. The team has talent and a young QB who could be pretty good, but their OL is a mess and their defensive secondary outside of Adams is very pedestrian. They dropped 16% of their cap into a MLB, RB, and aging G. With the right coaching this team could be good. I don't think they have it.

RD 3, Pick 74: RB Devin Singletary, Florida Atlantic

I think this is a baseless criticism. How many "breakaway" TDs are there in the NFL by RBs? The key stat for explosiveness is always # of 20+ yard runs. Singletary has the quickness and short-area speed necessary to do everything needed but break an 80-yarder. Was Thurman fast? Hell no he wasn't. -

Kinda highlights the need for coordination between the GM and coaching staff, doesn't it? Also really places a spotlight on Hackett's (and by association, Marrone's) incompetence. The selection of Spiller may not have been what was best for the Bills at the time but Gailey knew how to maximize his usefulness. Makes me feel good about the current level of communication between Beane and the coaching staff. -

The Bills could wind up with four starters through the first three rounds of this draft (Oliver, Ford, Singletary, Knox). You are speaking as though it was a foregone conclusion Singletary would be around later. You are also implying I don't care if Beane "reaches" for players...I don't think he did in this situation and if Singletary proves to be an above-average RB my point will be proven. The point remains, however, that fans in particular get way too "jacked up" over where a guy was drafted before they have any idea the sort of player he will be in the NFL. -

After the first round, I think people get WAY too caught up in where a guy was drafted. If Singletary becomes a productive player nobody will ever care that he was drafted at #74 instead of #94. Nobody. -

I think 74-30 = 44. So the Bills likely had a mid-2nd round grade on Singletary. You description of Singletary as a player also leaves a bit to be desired. There are many NFL experts I've heard who believe he has a chance to be very good in the NFL, and it was a shrewd move by Buffalo to get a young, talented guy in the locker room to feed off of the wisdom of guys like Shady and Gore. -
Buffalo Bills: Embedded season 2 - new episode Sun. 8/11
eball replied to BillsFan4's topic in The Stadium Wall Archives
I was intrigued by how much they featured the pursuit of Sills as well. Leads me to believe the OTAs don't mean diddly poo and we will see Sills get a lot of opportunities during TC and preseason. -

Is it okay for men to wear flip flops in public?
eball replied to Royale with Cheese's topic in Off the Wall Archives
During the summer months I wear my flops all the time...even with jeans to go out. Who wants to wear socks in the summer heat? I should add, I have very nice feet. -
In what league? Sorry, he's not close at this point in his career. Russell Wilson blows him away for example; their accomplishments are not even in the same ballpark. Cam has three winning seasons and five losing ones. He hasn't put back-to-back winning seasons together in his career. His career QB rating is 86. Throws just under 23 TDs per season (and 13 picks). He has not elevated his team. Wilson hasn't had a losing season out of seven. Career rating of 100. Throws 28 TDs per season and only 9 picks. And get this -- Russell averages more yards per carry over his career than Cam (5.7 to 5.2). Wilson can already get himself fitted for a gold jacket. Cam needs some significant performances over the next five years to get into that conversation. Cam is all hype. Wilson is the real deal. I hope Allen takes after the latter.

I don't think the ratings are "trash" but we have to remember they are just the opinions of three supposed "experts" (Louis Riddick, Kevin Seifert, and Field Yates) and not anything particularly scientific or analytic. For example, in the Bills' snippet they praise the front office and how the GM and HC are in lock-step with how they want to build the roster and develop culture. Quote: "the plan is clear and the leadership is solid." Then they give coaching a grade of 77.7 (14th) and front office a grade of 73.7 (19th)? It makes no sense. Is the Bills' roster (non-QB) really 26th in the league? Have their drafts under the current regime really been 20th in the league? The only Bills-related ranking I agree with is QB (26th) simply because Allen hasn't proven anything yet. It's still the slow time for NFL news and ESPN has to create content. I don't think these guys put nearly as much effort into truly evaluating each team as we may think they do. The perennial playoff teams and favorites are always going to receive preferential treatment. If these articles were being written in the 90s the Bills would have been in the top 3 every year. To be the man you've got to beat the man.

“Around the NFL” thread (for stuff that isn’t thread worthy)
eball replied to BillsFan4's topic in The Stadium Wall Archives
When I watched a bit of Hard Knocks last season I was absolutely stunned Hue Jackson has ever been thought of as NFL HC material. Stunned. -
I don't really think that's even true any more. In recent years the starters are getting less and less time in what used to be called the "dress rehearsal" game, unless it's a new coaching staff or there is a lot of team turnover. I suppose for the Bills maybe the starting offense will get a bit more time in this one if they haven't looked good during the first two weeks. Also -- aren't all of the preseason games live on the GamePass app?
