They had no business winning that game
BigBuff423 replied to TPS's topic in The Stadium Wall Archives
+1 Truthfully - the BILLS of old, would have lost that game - the two previous wins were convincing and a demonstration of talent and coaching making some necessary adjustments. This game was about making the most of some opportunities, taking advantage of their mistakes, and closing it out. Things the previous BILLS teams did not do. Kudos, enjoy the win today and get back to work tomorrow. -
I'm sorry but I couldn't disagree more. Rex is a citizen who has every right to express his political beliefs and attend rallies, hang signs, put on bumper stickers, etc. If he were holding his team meetings at a rally, or having his players go with him as part of their "job", well then of course that would be wrong. But, this is just an American expressing his Constitutional freedom and privilege of endorsing his choice for President. This, if anything, represents a strong model of behavior: be involved, be informed, and vote. Regardless of the candidate, just be a part of the process.

Also, true - but that's just one series...and a long one for the reasons you stated. However, had the Offense come out and sustained a drive after the first big bomb to Goodwin, and then continued to at least equal out the T.O.P., I truly believe the Defensive numbers would look MUCH different. In other words, I don't believe the Defense was that much worse, as it was more a cumulative effect of mental and physical fatigue over the course of the game because the Offense couldn't keep the ball.
-
To me, this was never more obvious than in the JETS game. People piled on the Defense, but failed to recognize the sheer enormity of Time of Possession which has a cumulative effect on the Defense when the Offense can't provide not only a breather, but an ability to gather themselves and make adjustments.

Pats* Punter: Main reason we didn't blow them out?

Bills WR draft picks in the top 5 rounds since 2006
BigBuff423 replied to dayman's topic in The Stadium Wall Archives
However, to be fair to Whaley - when you look at the best TEs in the game, they are generally Drafted in the 3rd / 4th rounds and take a year or two to develop. Gronk is an aberration, but the rest of them are middle round guys. That's why I am ALWAYS against Drafting a TE in the 1st round and almost never Drafting a TE in the 2nd. The list is pretty incredible really, when you take a look at the position historically. That's also why getting Clay was important, because you're not waiting 2 to 3 years for a guy to develop the ability to play the position, he already has it....now, them *using* him properly and TT throwing him the ball is a completely different matter. -
I agree that he did enough to win, and I'm not complaining about the present - or even "complaining" about the future. But in response to the topic, I just don't think Tyrod's type of play warrants a long-term investment or deserves the same type of trust from the fans, just IMO of course. And thank you for responding.
-
Your critique is incredibly eloquent, so I'm embarrassed to ask, but could you elaborate please?
-
To me, Tyrod is the quintessential one year wonder with little to no long-term viability. I don't think Tyrod's play is sustainable over the course of years. I sound like a broken record but I prefer a tall, strong, smart QB who can read Defenses, stand in the pocket and make all the throws, audible like a mad scientist and then deliver when the crunch time comes. Brady, Manning (both for that matter, but primarily Peyton), Brees, etc, and the good ones to great ones, can do just that: force your team to a win on their shoulders and stellar play. I don't see it in Tyrod, and mainly due to his inability to make the cerebral part of the game the most important part. Much like EJ, like his work ethic and attitude and desire, but for him the size and football acumen isn't where I'd want it to be for a long-term QB solution. I would run with Tyrod this year to see how far it gets them, and then pony up the Draft chips and take your QB of the future next year.

opposing coaches now have game tape
BigBuff423 replied to HelloNewman's topic in The Stadium Wall Archives
Obviously, no way of knowing definitively but I would say this sums up some of the frustrations Rex and Co. had with Roman. This, also makes it difficult to say without equivocation that Tyrod *can't* be the type of QB Buffalo needs, because it's a bit of the chicken-egg scenario. However, in full disclosure I've not been sold on Tyrod since he was brought in, but supported him and hoped he could turn the corner for the sake of making the BILLS a legitimate playoff contender. However, I just think an NFL caliber - franchise QB over the LONG term, is a pocket passer who can read Defenses, call audibles, and make the necessary throws but does not necessarily have to have a rocket launcher for an arm, just strong enough, especially in Buffalo (until we get a dome-esque type field). -

Simply because the opposing teams in two consecutive weeks, when asked about how the Defense neutralized Tyrod, stated these exact sentiments in the post-game pressers. -
Jim Schwartz defenses doing Jim Schwartz things
BigBuff423 replied to dezertbill's topic in The Stadium Wall Archives
I am now convinced you didn't watch the game at all.....Wentz was making at the LOS adjustments all game, calling audibles, directing blocking, going through progressions, taking big hits and standing in the pocket....I'm not sure what "decisions" you think a QB should be making back there (i.e. what's for breakfast, redhead or blonde) but he was doing everything a vet QB would do - something Taylor has not done yet this year - and doing it fairly well. Not going to argue the level of Defense has been suspect at best, but that's not his issue. He's now 2-0 as a starter and has done a nice job. As for rushing TD's, again you didn't watch the game....you missed the throws that put them that close to the endzone...you missed the throw that was a perfect drop into the hands of a sprinting WR a few yards in front of the pylon that *should* have been a TD but dropped by a guy who nearly led the league last year in drops....but please, hold tight to your little whim that Wentz is not being "asked to make a whole lot of decisions".....and I'm not going to touch your Schwartz's defense comment, because it's based in sheer lunacy and hallucination....wow, just wow.... -

I'm not really sure you watched the game last night..."heavy on the run", you did notice that 9 of the first 10 plays were passes, right? "Wentz is shaky"...really? After taking one big hit after another and standing in the pocket and delivering on time to his target, that's shaky? Man, I wish Buffalo's Offense and QB looked that "shaky"....sorry, I apologize for the tone of this statement but it just seems like these observations are really off the mark, IMHO....on the topic of Schwartz, he was a fantastic DC, and sadly, tainted by the inept Marrone, so that taint stayed with him in the new regime and he was discarded like the refuse Marrone truly was, when he should have gotten the job...again, IMO. -
I would prefer a slow-footed, pure pocket passer, played in a pro-style Offense, strong arm but even better accuracy, and has the mental capability to read / adjust to Defenses. I think in today's NFL climate that makes my preferred type of QB a high 2nd round pick.

Seriously? You can't evaluate someone's resume on the totality of their work? So, you're the kind of guy who, if friends with, makes one mistake and you cut them off? Really? Nice...when's the last time even the best of HC's / Coordinators didn't make a mistake? I mean, taking his resume as a whole into consideration, you don't see the prolific brilliance he's demonstrated over the course of his coaching career? Do some reading and get back to me....it's the same guy who got Favre's best year in Minnesota out of him and then scouted and essentially pulled the trigger on Drafting Russell Wilson, but of course a single play defines a career....
-
I'm all about Bevell....I was on that train when the last round of interviews was going on. If you do a little research, you see he was the driving force behind drafting Russell Wilson, and obviously has been successful in making all types of adjustments to personnel and game plans...

Buffalo Bills Fire Offensive Coordinator Greg Roman

Had to be done, but probably NOT the answer....maybe we're all wrong, but most likely just a precursor to the staff doing down in flames -
To those who were around during the last playoff games
BigBuff423 replied to Virgil's topic in The Stadium Wall Archives
I agree, but the larger issue is that while no HC should be held to the standard of years gone before them - in reality, they are. These years of poor play and missing the playoffs has gotten so monotonous and painful, when any spark of hope arises, it lights a fire that makes you love the game again, love the team again, and gives you that old game day feeling when you couldn't wait to watch your team play -- and WIN! But now....I've become listless in terms of my energy for the team. And I'm afraid Pegula will just allow this to continue for "continuity's sake". As for injuries and suspensions, do we REALLY need to reference the Pats??? I know they're hated and often for good reason, but when you lose Brady to a suspension (most of which is just b.s.) and Gronk to an injury, and go into AZ and win....that's organizational success. The difference between a stellar franchise and one who just exists....and yes, all of those words tasted like death as I type them, but they're true. #Washmymouthoutwithsoap -
Coughlin was a great HC, but this has been the problem of the BILLS for far too long - they want guys who've done it all before, but that means they're older and unlikely to adjust to the changing landscape of the game. We need a McCarthy-esque hire, and say what you will about the Patsies, but when they're hired Belichick, it was no guarantee of success, it was a bit of a gamble...Andy Reid in Philly was essentially a similar gamble....they have to look at the promise and project their NFL success based on a wide scope of factors, not just "have they won in the NFL before". Because, Rex had his time in NY when his Defense and the right conditions made him a short-term capable HC....honestly, I thought Rex with Roman the BILLS had a legitimate chance at being contenders in the AFC East when the hires were made...now, I see a Defensive HC who doesn't know his own Defense and an OC who fails to game-plan accordingly and fails to make adjustments as needed....this sucks. Plain and simple...it just, sucks. Love this team for so long, and see what a complete dumpster fire and misshapen heap of garbage its become.

seantrel Henderson facing 4 game suspension
BigBuff423 replied to Don't stop billievein's topic in The Stadium Wall Archives
However, given how good he looked in the last pre-season game, while he probably wouldn't have played in Baltimore, hard to believe he wouldn't make it back for one or more of the other important games. But, you're right...at this point, that's just speculation.
