John Miller: The straight and narrow
BigBuff423 replied to YoloinOhio's topic in The Stadium Wall Archives
I agree that Nix was far better at that time than the BILLS had in 10 years leading up to his appointment as GM....but, some people have already written off EJ and then pointed the finger at Whaley - and NOT to turn this into ANOTHER QB debate - I just wanted to point out that to me Whaley has done a HELL of a job, especially in the Draft the last few years (with this year's Draft results still pending and even Kujo's progress remaining to be seen) and that if Miller were to wind up starting in the G position and do a really good job there for years to come, it only highlights just how good and smart Whaley is as well as hiring good to great scouts. People who have already decided on EJ's future point to Whaley for the "blame" but Nix was the GM, the final decision was his...I assume Whaley had in-put, just as Monos and Fisher have in the last three Drafts, but who takes the blame / credit? Whaley does....so, if we're going to be consistent, Nix gets the blame / credit for EJ also. Now, personally - I believe THIS is a year where with a proper and NFL caliber coaching staff and Offensive mind in Greg Roman, EJ will demonstrate what is true value is in the NFL: starting QB, Franchise QB, or a career back-up. Just IMO.... -
John Miller: The straight and narrow
BigBuff423 replied to YoloinOhio's topic in The Stadium Wall Archives
Great read, good information, and a hell of a story. I truly do hope Miller becomes a Perennial Pro-Bowl Guard for the BILLS, for them and for him. Also, if true (which obviously remains to be seen - a looooong way from showing anything of substance or value), Whaley continues to hit homeruns on the Draft. Before we digress into the QB issue (AGAIN!), keep in mind Nix was the GM at the time EJ was Drafted and while Whaley was the man in the wings, Nix was at the helm. You can't have it both ways: you either give the GM the credit / blame for picks, or you don't. -
I understand there is not enough money under the Salary Cap guidelines to sign everybody, but given Dough Whaley's propensity for Drafting good LBs and the absolute disaster that was LT prior to Cordy Glenn in a BILLS uniform, it does not compute with me for the BILLS to not guarantee Glenn is a Buffalo BILL for the next five to six years. Good to great LTs (and right now I think I would put Glenn on the good with potential to be great ranking / scale) do not just get picked in a Draft and then start right away without a hiccup or problem in making NFL adjustments. Glenn is young and he's their guy, this should be an absolute necessity. Dareus, Glenn, Gilmore, Bradham - in that order, IMHO, in terms of priority and where to cut the fat if necessary.

Crystal Ball: Top Prospects for 2016 NFL Draft
BigBuff423 replied to 26CornerBlitz's topic in The Stadium Wall Archives
My issue out of this: why do they have the BILLS picking 19th? So, ANOTHER 9-7 year is what these "experts" are predicting?? With all the additions to the team, notably the Coaching Staff and Offensive players?? Umm, ok....I don't know if the BILLS win the Super Bowl, but I do think they make the playoffs this year. I realize I'm biased, but 19th?? I would be disappointed (again) if that happens.... -
Great minds think alike? Or....disturbed....something like that.

Where will you be on draft night?
BigBuff423 replied to mead107's topic in The Stadium Wall Archives
A friend of mine that is a Broncos fan and I will be at a local bar with killer wings on Friday night for rounds 2-3 drowning the fire in some beer. -
If the BILLS like him that much, they trade back from 50 to pick up an extra 3rd or a 4th and take him IF he falls to them in the 3rd. Otherwise, QB "depth" is a luxury at this point given EJ and Cassel, the two most likely to push for the starting job.
-
And it's not that I disagree on Jim Monos' statement about QB mechanics, but my question is: if that's how the TEAM truly feels, then why Draft a QB with poor mechanics and the idea they can "fix" him to be their QB of the future??
-
Due to life being a little off-kilter the last several months, I haven't been able to put in any time really researching Draft picks, so I will defer to others' opinions. But, from watching Cleveland and seeing what little I have of their Off-Season. I'll just say, Offensive line and WR would be at the top of my list. Taking a TE in the 3rd and RB in the 4th.

Grade Whaley's Job Performance
BigBuff423 replied to Dorkington's topic in The Stadium Wall Archives
Far too soon...should at least wait until after this Draft. I think I understand where you're coming from and essentially what you're trying to get at, but still can't really effectively evaluate DW until the end of this year's Draft. IMHO -
I have zero issue, NONE, with Cassel being the starting QB if Roman and Rex believes he's earned it come September. But honestly, EJ might fit Roman's style of QB a little better and with some encouragement to use his legs (but get out of bounds or slide) EJ may very well resurrect what once was a very promising career. Coaching makes a huge difference (duh!) and having a guy like Rex to get him to relax and Roman to mentor him and bring him along, might very well be the cure.

Forgiveness isn't necessary, but I will disagree. You may be right, but your hypothesis is largely based on your assessment of Mario Williams' value and not as much what Rex's history demonstrates. So, maybe Rex would throw turds at my statement, but I'll just wait and see what happens before I make any judgments. Simply saying, Mario Williams is a rare talent and is an elite DE in the 4-3, but if you recall, MW also said he didn't particularly care for playing the OLB in a 3-4 and it seems like a huge leap to say that Rex will undo all his years of coaching and expertise for one player....he might, and that's possible...I'm just saying, it would be against the grain for him, in reference to what he's done going all the way back to his Defensive Coordinator days with the Ravens. Just a thought....

Totally good with this, that we may disagree on this point, and only time will tell. But appreciate you maintaining a positive and collegial discussion despite our differing of opinions...sad that in today's message board world, such a "thanks" has to even be stated, but it does. Regardless, whoever is wearing the red, blue, and white - I support them 100%.

I'm not understating his talent, but keep in mind he came to Buffalo at a time when the BILLS' roster was bereft of quality talent sans KW, and desperate to make Chan and Wanny's team work, the deal doesn't necessarily fit what the team will need, and want, to do in 2016 - just as a guess. Championship teams take calculated risks and those risks include letting guys go / trade / cut when their value has diminished compared to their cost. It's not anything against Mario, but the contract relative to where the team is now compared to where it was when the contract was signed. Just my opinion - not starting a fire here. And that may very well happen, you could very much be right - but Rex's history suggests otherwise, dating back to the Ravens. This year, it's obvious he'll use the talent he has and make the most of it, largely because he has to. But with this Draft still ahead, next year's FA and Draft, I'll bet that the team moves much closer to his standard 3-4, again IMHO
-
I don't think Mario Williams is still on the team to start 2016, reatructured obviously is a consideration - but he doesn't really fit Rex's schematic type and with Wilkerson from the JETS a potential FA next year, might see him on the line instead of Mario moving back to a traditional 3-4 Defense.

LaCanfora - Fins best Positioned to Knock Off Pats
BigBuff423 replied to The Avenger's topic in The Stadium Wall Archives
I love how all the "experts" say, "You don't win games in March"..."The Division isn't won in Free Agency" and then a team like the Dolphins "wins" b/c of splash factor and they're ready to anoint them the next dynasty...w...t.....f?! Hey, I have no idea what all the changes for the BILLS will mean, hopefully a championship, but for now, I'm content with believing they've gotten better and until the Pats are taken down, they're still the Division and Super Bowl champs (ouch, that hurts to write), but promoting one team over another at THIS point, is lunacy! -
You may be right, but the BILLS were a projected $60 million under the Cap before FA, and were still $16 million under the Cap before Clay, so as for next year, I don't that's really an issue. Now, how Clay's numbers impact current FA, that's a different story. However, OL was THE biggest issue identified by anyone with a set of eyes, and certainly identified by DW and Rex, that leads me to believe, they're not done...how they do that, may be the key, but I don't think it's Draft, they did that last year with three very promising Rookies. IMHO

After FA What Positions Are Draft Critical?

It's hard to pigeonhole a position, but preferably: TE, LB, QB (Grayson), SS, BPA -
Charles Clay REPORT: Dolphins won't match offer sheet
BigBuff423 replied to The Poojer's topic in The Stadium Wall Archives
Best 2 things that have happened to the BILLS in the last 25 years, happened this football year: Pegulas took over and Marrone wimped out, tucked tail and left town. Rex / Roman with Whaley pulling the roster strings has altered the BILLS' destiny in a powerfully positive way unlike any other in more than two decades.
