Rotoworld ranks Whaley as worst GM in NFL
BigBuff423 replied to YoloinOhio's topic in The Stadium Wall Archives
I'm all for tempering expectations and not getting too high or too low in things like this, but to me Whaley is getting the shaft in much of the discussion around his tenure with Buffalo. First, like it or not Nix was the GM at time EJ was Drafted and whether DW was singing his praises or not, Nix pulled the trigger - that's on him, or accountability and leadership mean nothing. Second, let's not forget he did trade for arguably the best RB since Thurman to come to Buffalo and he's done well enough with guys like Hughes, and Brown Brothers at LB, Darby, and a number of other moves that did well on the field, i.e. Incognito. However, he also gets the blame for QB carousel and NOT finding a long-term solution, for the Watkins trade - not Watkins the player himself - but the trade cost too much for what he got in return, and for some of the other players who have not performed as expected. Basically, I believe I would put him in the middle of the pack and say that this current Draft is his final show to decide whether he should remain the Buffalo zip code or go find housing somewhere else. -
Ok, thank you....so it must be they have a 6th and NOT a 7th...my mistake. Thanks for clarification.

Bills doing homework on 2017 QBs
BigBuff423 replied to blacklabel's topic in The Stadium Wall Archives
We've seen what Drafting for "need" does to an NFL team, I was not in favor of keeping Tyrod merely because I DON'T think he is a very good QB as NFL QBs go, but I do appreciate the plan, the didactic means of allowing their Draft plan to come to them. That said, I think we sometimes underestimate the power of coaching in the NFL because we assume a great prospect will nearly automatically translate to a great NFL player, and certainly with QBs that is very far from true. So, I think I would prefer the team to unearth the talent and cultivate it to its top potential....so if its Webb from Cal or Peterman from Pitt or some other lesser "hyped" commodity, than so be it....because we can have a list of names that QBs were not projected to be "the" QB, and instead based on situation and coaching and potential emerged as fantastic players, including QBs. -
I like it for both football and life-story reasons....I also think he would be a good fit for Buffalo since Uncle Jim could help him, mentor him, and provide some familial accountability. That's not to say I would do anything before the 6th Round and since the Bills don't have one (I believe?), that would mean the 7th, in which case I would be ALLLLLLLL for....it would be like buying a $1 lottery ticket. IMHO

Prospect Watch: Mitch Trubisky QB, UNC
BigBuff423 replied to Maury Ballstein's topic in The Stadium Wall Archives
God only knows what will happen, but I do find it difficult to believe the Bills trading UP....however, if they stand pat and Mitch is there at 10, I could also see them Drafting him if they believe that much in him....I think Watson falls, Jets Draft him and Mitch is there for the picking or for trade bait..... -
I voted Yes, because I believe it makes the most sense for them this particular year - but the "Yes" of course hinges on getting value for that trade back, i.e. the right Draft / Player picks in return. So, presuming those factors correlate, I am in favor of the trade back scenario and in fact believe it is THE strategy to have for this Draft (is possible).

I loved the Sammy Watkins pick, but hated the currency it took to get him - which is not his fault, so picking up his option seems like a foregone conclusion. The option allows the team to keep him at a reduced rate for an additional year and time to negotiate a long-term deal should they feel one is necessary, which I'm sure they do. However, the key is the value. He may want to be paid like a star, but has not yet shown he has produced like an elite WR - again, not ALL his fault due to the first year being what it was, and yes the injury issue is one to consider. The 5th year allows for health to be considered a factor and not simply throwing away what could be a really important piece to the playoff puzzle in the years to come.

I like Gillislee, but Karlos was the stud opposite Shady the year before and RBs these days (unless it's Zeke or AP) are a dime a dozen....if TD Mike goes to Pats, and Bills receive a 5th in exchange - do you really think they can't Draft a RB in the 5th with that pick that can be a good alternate to Shady?? Karlos was a 5th round pick, Gillislee is obviously a 5th round pick....do we see a pattern here? I would like him NOT to go to the Pats, but their RBs are not the big threat: Brady and receivers are....so while I like him, I don't see the giant panic on this board with losing him for the reasons I mentioned above...but that's just IMHO of course.

I like this QB; too often we are enamored with big arms and gaudy numbers....but the best NFL QBs are smart, accurate ones. Brady was a combine bust, Romo was Undrafted, others were believed to be too weak or in Wilson's case - too short - but good to great QBs can run a Pro Style offense, read Defenses, lead the Offense, and make crisp accurate throws. So, I'll take that gamble over physical traits if I have to choose.

I'm not a fan because of what it would cost, as in the 10th pick - assuming he's still there, and I'm not even fully convinced he'll be an impact player in his first year. I am a fan of trading down and using the BPA idea. Teams in recent years, namely the Seahawks and Pats don't use high picks on WRs or TEs. I firmly believe, much more in the modern NFL, WRs are becoming more like the RBs in that you can find a decent WR anywhere, it's the system, it's the QB, and it's about how those two things are coached. I say this every year when someone wants to draft a top 10 TE: they do not value at anywhere until the 3rd round. Except for Tony Gonzalez and now Gronk (both, extremely rare exceptions to the rule), all of the valuable and productive TEs were 3rd and 4th round picks. Look them up, it's amazing really - no matter their talent, speed, vertical skills, etc., - it proves to be a position that just takes a 2-3 years to get productivity from, even the special ones. So, go Safety, LB, DT/DE and then take a WR with an extra 3rd you gain by trading back. Just my .02

Houston traded Osweiler to Cleveland

I presume this would be so Texans can get and afford Romo -

The issue is that it's not just "oh well, what's another year"...the issue is, that it's another year without a long-term solution that could provide the spark to something much better. I am NOT in favor of keeping Tyrod, but IF they do, I still think they pull a Washington Redskins type of thing (no, not trading up) but drafting a QB in 2nd round and say, 4th or 5th round. Like Mahomes and C. Kelly or something of that variety, because I don't think Cardale has the capability to do the job really at all. Maybe I'm wrong, but I'm ok with basically exchanging Cardale for Chad Kelly or someone similar, and IMO Kelly doesn't go before the 4th, if at all, because of off-field issues and injury that will prevent him from being truly available for the 2017 season. Also, IF the Bills DON'T keep Tyrod, I'm on the same plan, but I'm going for someone like Matt Moore, Glennon or Landry Jones and then Drafting a QB in the 1st if possible and still Drafting a QB late....I don't think the Bills can ignore the QB position the way they have for all these years. Yes, this team is good in other areas and has needs like S/LB/WR, but from watching teams like Pats and Seahawks, WR is much less the concern and can be done via FA.

Go on record! Which 2017 QB will have the best career?
BigBuff423 replied to FireChan's topic in The Stadium Wall Archives
IMHO, what translates best to the NFL is the mental acumen required to excel and based on what I've read, Kaaya is that guy. He doesn't have elite arm strength and often I saw him throwing behind receivers on long gains, but his short to intermediate accuracy and his mental preparation toward the game reminded me of someone who could truly succeed in the NFL. Additionally, I like his height compared to some of the others and while Watson is sensational specimen, I'm not convinced his type of Quarterbacking is one full of longevity in the NFL. His Rookie year may explode with tremendous success, but I suspect much like almost all of the Japanese pitchers in baseball, after a year or two of success they tend to fade. So, I will take Kaaya for the long-term and it would best suit him to sit for a year or two, learning and cultivating the NFL so that when he steps in, he is able to fully utilize his greatest asset. -
Which will make you more depressed Falcons or Patriots?
BigBuff423 replied to HT02's topic in The Stadium Wall Archives
I wouldn't hate on another team's success, especially Atlanta that seems to have a decent group of guys led by Matt Ryan. Matty Ice appears to have a good reputation, so I'd be happy for that team and their fans. As for Brady and Pats, their Division rivals so of course I'm hoping they lose. Having said that, very difficult not to respect the job Belichick has done through the years. Remarkable really.... -
IMO, that's exactly why he's chosen experienced Coordinators, for this very reason. And presuming it's accurate (and nothing to say it is or isn't), I think it's a smart move.
-
Not that it effects Offense necessarily, but Wiki says he was Special Teams Coach the two Super Bowl winning years in Denver ('97,'98). Speaks to his versatility - and I like the pedigree of success. Also, working with Peyton, Flacco helps.
-
No problem at all - and I completely understand.

Thank you - and I agree, almost everyday I come home from work my phone gets plugged in and I don't touch it until she goes to bed. However, it is my mother in-law's birthday and only my wife, daughter, and nice but rock brained brother in-law speak English. So, I was simply passing some time while I waited until we could leave. And yes, I played cards with my daughter and ate cake with her, but still needed to pass the time. Larger point: we're on the same page.

Yes, but my fault because I failed to connect my second thought which was they first statement AND / OR those who are older and costly to the ability to get younger. I apologize, Kyle Williams is one of my favorite BILLS players, and totally hope he stays until he decides he no longer wants to play the game and then I hope he coaches for the Bills somehow. Completely my fault for not finishing my train of thought but to be fair, my 4 year old was all over me grabbing for attention while I typed that on my phone. Big apology to the legacy of Kyle on that one...
-
The thing is, all of the great Coordinators had to start somewhere and without opportunity, you never know what you have. I understand the AVP love, but considering McD worked with him in Carolina, I would think McD is pretty sure he knows what he's getting. Would think they've spitballed ideas over lunches and work about if / when they get their opportunity. So, since it's fresh and new and we're looking long-term, if McD is good with it - I'll take the open mind route and wait to see what unfolds....this kind of hire would also make sense of all the other position hires thus far.
-
I think Kyle Williams, A. Williams, Shady, Woods, Zack Brown, Incognito, Jordan Mills, Tyrod, and anyone else that doesn't fit within the mold of how McD believes football should be played. If Dareus didn't have that contract - no doubt he'd be gone to. To me - some of these will be traded and others simply released or not renewed.
-
Considering she has her own stash of loot, I just assumed she would bring her own...asking too much?
-
I've tired to grow a beard like Munn....never really quite works out the same....

I'm not sure how I feel about this if it were to happen. Joe Buscaglia presented some interesting options. And honestly, it's basically how I feel about all the coaches hired thus far, except McDermott that after much reading I'm truly warming to, and thinking positively regarding his potential.
