Davis, is the only one I like at the 10 slot...but, I wouldn't hate on a QB if they really like Mahomes....I would prefer they trade down, pick up 2nd or 3rd and 4th round picks....and get a LB, i.e Cunnigham

Post your round one draft night plans here
BigBuff423 replied to EmotionallyUnstable's topic in The Stadium Wall Archives
My round 1 Draft plans are boring....but Day 2, will be meeting a friend for beer and wings....honestly, I prefer it that way...Round 1 has all the hype, but it's those 2 rounds where a team truly begins to build their playoff caliber roster. Yes, a Franchise QB is important and freakish athletes are fun, but Gronk in Round 2, Andy Dalton in Round 2, Drew Brees in Round 2, Russell Wilson in Round 3, etc....those are key cogs in the wheel of productivity for their respective teams. So, I like Day 2 better for meeting a friend. -
.....it's hard for me to grasp some people's personal take on issues like these, I try to respect it....but it ain't always easy....I guess I just see this as McD trying to have a balance: have fun, but work hard and stay focused. Seems like a good life lesson to me....

TG on Whaley & McD sounds to be in charge update
BigBuff423 replied to Reed83HOF's topic in The Stadium Wall Archives
To put this in perspective, if Pegula was to fire Whaley after the Draft at some point, but before the start of training camp (such as May some time), it wouldn't be completely far-fetched. Pegula obviously DEPENDS on a GM to make football decisions and all of the scouting and prepping and putting together the board has occurred from August of last year up to this point. So, while Monos could probably do the job, I would assume Pegula feels more comfortable giving the reins to Whaley to allow him to make the actual decisions on whom to Draft with McD in the room and having a say as well. It's essentially the safest way to insure the Draft doesn't completely go awry after all the hard work, time, and money put into selecting the future players for their team. That said, I'm indifferent to the idea of Whaley staying or going....I think he's done enough to earn the benefit of this entire Off-season and let the first quarter to half of the season play out before making the final decision to either axe him or keep him for next season. However, if Pegulas keep him into next season, he needs to go before the end of the first half of the season so that the Draft board and FA targets can be done accordingly. -
Hogan and Gilly Prove Bills Scouting Superiority
BigBuff423 replied to Madd Charlie's topic in The Stadium Wall Archives
These are all fair points and good ones....I believe Whaley is better than most want to give him credit for, but I also believe there are certain areas - such as QB - he needs to improve tremendously to be considered "good". So, I'd give him a 6 out of 10 - with one more year to prove he get himself to at least a 7.5, which puts him in the upper third if he gets there... -
And to each his own, but in a year where the Bills really need depth and a year where the very depth they need is in the positions for which this Draft is strongest, it would seem to make the most sense. You can grab a good / great CB/Safety/WR in the 1st to 3rd round and a very capable RB / DL in the 5th or 4th and 5th if you trade back into the 4th...so, if you add picks in the 2nd or the 3rd or pick up an extra one in the 4th, I think you further insulate yourself from the injury issue that seems to plague the Bills every year....JMO

Can't take any issue with the pick, given WR is a place the Bills could use an upgrade and I know you were selecting whom you believed the Bills would pick, so well done all in all....I just don't like the pick myself. I think Davis will have a stellar NFL career, but WRs in the NFL over the last 5-7 years have shown to be similar to RBs in that you can find good ones all over the Draft and in the right system, the best ones aren't necessary. See Seattle or even the hated Pats....I would rather the Bills trade back and in the teens somewhere Draft a LB like Cunnigham or fall back into the 20s and take the CB, King, from UW - and address RB and WR in mid-rounds.

Went to school in Valdosta and lived there for several years. Their high school football team had a 12 page spread in Sports Illustrated many years ago at the same time the World Series had a 9 page spread. Their football talent runs deep - and the girls / women can be the ideal look / charm of Southern Bell - but not sure about this player taking over for Gilly.

Pats sign Gillislee to offer sheet
BigBuff423 replied to johnwalter's topic in The Stadium Wall Archives
Bandit, I know you were referring to a 3rd Round pick and drafting Mixon, but I just want to say from my perspective: no RB short of a sure-fire HOF is worth giving up a 5th round pick at the age of 27 when season starts and the short shelf-life of a RB in the NFL these days...to me, it makes more sense to use a 5th or even a 6th in this year's Draft on a back-up RB with real potential...the financials and age just make too much sense to go with it....IMHO, it was just a particularly bad year to try and keep a guy of Gilly's ilk for the Bills.... -

What if I told you, the largest Off Season thread and controversy would be spurred on by a 5th round pick and back up RB who was a FA at the age of 26? 86 pages people....86 pages and counting. -
You and your logic....silly.

Pegula shows Tim Murray and Dan Bylsma the door.
BigBuff423 replied to Chandler#81's topic in The Stadium Wall Archives
First, you're presuming knowledge that no one could possibly have....second, debate can be had on exactly WHO to hire as the Czar, but to me - there is NO debate any longer that one is needed for both franchises. And, keep in mind I was NEVER one to be a strong proponent of the idea.....I understood it, but was essentially tepid on the notion of a Czar....now, I have no doubt when I consider the Sabres and the current state of the Bills. At this point we shall agree to disagree, but I think there are football minds in the business who would love the idea to be the Czar to resurrect the Bills relevance and orchestrate a playoff / Super Bowl caliber roster and organization. -

I disagree because I think a sort of Czar can effective empower the GM in both franchises and assist in locating the HC for both franchises while not necessarily running their day to day activities. So, when there's staff meetings to discuss the actual sport side of the business the Pegulas have their rep asking the right questions, getting the answers appropriately and providing improved direction - essentially appointing a trustee of sorts while they merely sit back and enjoy being owners while the Czar is the only one with total access to them, if they enforce a chain-of-command. To me, this provides clarity for the owner and to the staff since the staff know they're getting good sport side information and insight. As far as dinosaur, for a Czar what you want is experience, but you also need one who knows their role - which is NOT a defacto GM, instead an overseer.... -

Marrone quit, and Rex is well....Rex. So if you don't think Rex should have been fired, we have nothing to discuss. As for Sabres, again, they brought in Nolan - a fan favorite - after giving Darcy too much time and then Murray after Pat came in as President and then abruptly quit....Murray to me did a pretty decent job, but not great - which is why I'm ok with the firing but would not have been upset if it was just Bylsma that was fired. Additionally, I do think that you can't look at "2 years" in a vacuum, you have to evaluate the situation as a whole. So, to me - they were patient enough, and changes needed to be made - but I also think, it's time to figure this thing out. They need a "Czar" for both franchises, and allow all of the information to flow through the Czar both down and up.... -

Snarky comment aside....it's time for one for each franchise. -

I agree...they're obviously not getting it right, but I don't think anyone can argue they aren't proactively trying to get championships to Buffalo. They also aren't panicking at first sight, see Cleveland, Browns....they are trying to give the people they empower to do their jobs, spending money in FA and various departments. I am coming around to the idea that in both franchises they need someone between themselves and the executives of those franchises though - the dreaded "Czar" title / position that has frequently been suggested. I am now convinced they need this person on both teams.... -
Nah, they will be positive, objective and painted with a generally up-beat perspective....

I'm in the let him go and use that 5th round pick on a RB to obtain similar production with a better value for a longer contract duration....too many other issues to address than sign on for an overcompensated back-up RB...with Shady in town, that's what this truly becomes....just IMO of course. -

Rotoworld ranks Whaley as worst GM in NFL
BigBuff423 replied to YoloinOhio's topic in The Stadium Wall Archives
I understand your premise (I believe), but what you're saying is - it's on him how Rex performed with the talent he acquired? So, Belichick would have had this team in the Super Bowl? If that's your premise, then Whaley did a hell of a job and if it's not, what you're saying is the HC and his staff - and with the recent story coming out about Rex giving Rob the run of the building - plays little part in the ability to win....? So, which is it? And I'm just wondering because the broad statement such as the one you made, leaves too much room for interpretation.... -
I CANNOT understate just how much I agree with this sentiment. Good to great QBs in recent memory that have not been Drafted in the 1st round: Dak, Wilson, Dalton, Brees, Romo, Brady, Carr (yes it was top 2nd, but still a 2nd), Cousins....I think what it shows is that good to great QBs can be found and maybe even, are better found in the 2nd Round and sometimes 3rd. I think the Bills need to tread carefully and examine what skills / mental acumen / leadership translates to the NFL level and go with it....
