Peterman will be the starter.
BigBuff423 replied to r henderson's topic in The Stadium Wall Archives
I don't know if he'll be the starter this year barring failure by Yates and injury to Tyrod - although, I'm encouraged to hear that McD is open to allowing a competition decide. It's how Russell Wilson became the year one starter as he came in to camp and wowed the coaches and never looked back....so, it's possible, but I think he still needs some time. -

As soon as the news hit the wire, it made total sense to bring him in for a visit. -
Actually I can acknowledge that I'm possibly wrong, im willing to accept that if there is ever something that convinces me I truly am - but right now it is just a matter of opinion. However, I am farrrrrrr from perfect nor do I believe I have all knowledge, so yeah - I could be way off. That's a real possibility. Yes, it's real as far as I'm concerned. The difference between climate change and the notion of momentum in a sports game is so vast - that discussion would need to occur in person at a bar with copious amounts of beer.

Wow...honestly, I don't think I would have ever anticipated this type of response from you Scott. I've been on this board in one form or another (didn't create an acccount but stopped by to read and review for years before I officially joined) since the Losman Draft, and your posts didn't previously strike me as dismissive and an attempt at shaming merely because someone disagrees with you. First, I didn't say the metrics or analytics didn't have a part in the evaluation process, just that measuring a QB based primarily on that information is faulty and that based on my "eye test" of Tyrod, he is not a long term solution. Which in turn lead to a discussion about aspects of a QB that can't be "measured" which then lead to an example of momentum. As for the standards of math or science, this is merely a discussion that expands on how you evaluate a QB and to not lean too heavily on the science or math and to use your ability to see and discern beyond statistics. Again, disagreement would seem to be healthy for this board and yet you attempt to shame me or bully me through sarcasm and esoteric rhetoric, don't be that guy....be better, be at least a little of what you probably set out to be when you started this whole thing. And then you stooped even further, to try and bring my child (children / "kids") into the fray....ok, Mr. Big Man, well done - you're now attempting to draw me in by slyly insulting my parenting skills and therefore, the authenticy of my fatherhood....bravo, take a bow and then just leave this alone. Please and thank you.

In all due respect, I strongly disagree. Also, I don't think it's a fair conclusion to state, "you didn't like math and science in school", since that seems to be a condescending tone that I intentionally tried to avoid. I know your stature with this board and appreciate the work you've put in to make this a wonderful place to discuss Bills football, but I don't think that gives you a pass for the tenor of your dissent.
-
We agree on that point; I was merely stating that the ability to harness momentum and utilize it to your advantage, is not a quantifiable metric therefore, it requires an "eye test" when evaluating QBs. Because, unlike any other position in football the QB controls the momentum so much more than any other position, and his decisions make or break your Offense. It's the heart of this issue that I raise the question about how much the metrics / analytics play a role in evaluating a QB. I'm not saying that information isn't useful or that it shouldn't augment your evaluation, merely indicating that so often metrics / measurable / analytics, don't predict very well how a QB will do in the NFL because it's the IMMEASURABLES that comprise a vast amount of QB ability.
-
And I'm not asking this to be condescending, I'm legitimately asking: did you watch the 1992 comeback win?? If you did, fair enough once again we disagree - if you did not, then you should watch it from start to finish. Because I can tell you, the momentum swing in that game was entirely real and relevant. Now, could it simply be the psychological manner in which momentum manifests itself into confidence - of course - but it doesn't change the significant at all. You'll tell me it's one game, but seeing the Bills all these years on the reverse side of that pendulum, doesn't negate it's truth either - just the taste is a bit saltier.
-
I'm sorry, but I disagree whole-heartedly. Baseball and football are extremely different sports and while it quite obviously works in baseball across the board, I think in football you have to use the metrics and analytics carefully and sparingly. With lineman and linebackers based on their assignments and how they execute the plays, the analytics seem to me to have more value. But with a QB, there are just so many variables including how a game "feels" or "flows", also known as momentum that cannot be easily quantified in metrics that impact how a QB performs that it is a position that is much more about evaluating the QB by sight and what he accomplishes in the MANNER in which he accomplishes it or fails to do so, than any amount of metrics or analytics can provide. JMO, but it's not about dismissing the analytics as it is being quite cautious in their use.

RD 2, Pick 37: Zay Jones (WR) - ECU
BigBuff423 replied to 26CornerBlitz's topic in The Stadium Wall Archives
During one of McD's pressers after he was hired but before the Draft, someone asked him about the #2 WR and getting one in the Draft. If I recall correctly he stated the #2 WR was already on the roster, but that was after they signed Andre Holmes. Holmes and Z. Jones seem to fit his interest in outside / boundary type WRs, and assuming that's accurate information and insight, I think the Offense will be putting Sammy in the slot and putting him in motion quite a bit to get him into space like he was used in the Clemson Offense on bubble screens, etc. and try to utilize his YAC talent. JMO.... -
RD 5, Pick 171: Nathan Peterman (QB) - Pitt
BigBuff423 replied to YoloinOhio's topic in The Stadium Wall Archives
In one respect or another he lead his team to 4 playoff appearances while he basically only played 7 seasons...when was the last time a Bills QB did that? Oh yea, Kelly...additionally, he went through two rounds of the playoffs the first two times and the first year he started, in 2002, two years after he was Drafted 18th overall, he took the 1-4 Jets to a 9-7 season and eventually an AFC Championship game. Again, when was the last time that happened for the Bills? Yeah, JK....arm strength in the NFL and by fans mostly, is significantly overrated...does the QB have to have better arm strength than your average Joe, well duh?! But to say he has to have a rocket is just false...look at Peterman's tape and tell me he can't make all the necessary throws for the Bills....if you truly believe that, then fine...we just disagree. Otherwise, while he will never be Favre, he absolutely could be a good to great WCO style QB. Pennington's numbers were very good, especially since it occurred before a defender couldn't even breathe on a receiver without getting a flag, and surprise, surprise the Offense that was geared toward Pennington....you guessed it, more of a WCO style of offense. I say this just to say, the narrative about a powerful arm in the NFL doesn't fit the reality. We could go all day about big armed QBs that never produce in the NFL....poise, accuracy, anticipation, intelligence, command of the offense, reading a Defense, making smart audibles and changing plays based on coverage...things that really matter much more than arm strength. -
Thank you for putting this out there OP, and I appreciate another person / professional is does their best to comb through stats and digest them to some degree for us casual readers or observers. However, while the stats are basic math regarding percentages - and I trust the man to have a calculator to do the percentage for him and that he's not "lying" - I disagree with the other statement or conclusion of this information that leads to believing Tyrod is a "good" QB. To me, finding a good QB is much like what the Supreme Court referred to pornography, "I can't define it, but I know it when I see it"....a really good to great QB is similar. I don't necessarily that works counter toward a poor QB, for that I think only time and experience truly show, unless they were really bad in college, which makes me think they didn't even get a look to come to the NFL. Bottom line for me: Tyrod doesn't pass the eye test. I don't watch the All-22 and from what people say, Tyrod does a fine job, but I watch the games and I watch many, many other NFL and college games, and Tyrod routinely throws the ball high, low, wide or behind a receiver. He misses open receivers in the middle of the field and he gets antsy feet in the pocket. To me, he is not Russ Wilson 2.0, he is just an incredible athlete with a penchant for the deep ball. IMHO, a true NFL QB stands in the pocket, takes the hits and delivers, commands the Offense with precision and accuracy, and has the ability to take what the Defense gives him bit by bit and chew up the yardage as well as making good audible calls at the line, not just making plays after the snap with his running or elusive ability, which to Tyrod's credit he does as well as anyone in the league. Tyrod was probably the best option for this year, but he is NOT a good NFL QB, he's just better than what we've had for so very long. Sometimes, desperation makes it hard to tell the difference.

RD 5, Pick 171: Nathan Peterman (QB) - Pitt
BigBuff423 replied to YoloinOhio's topic in The Stadium Wall Archives
So basically a West Coast Offense....much like the one BILLS will most likely be running. And one who has been taking snaps under center as a Pro Style Offense is an advantage. As I've said before, no idea how it will work out but he seems like a good fit for this projected Offense. -

Whenever someone - not just you - brings up the idea of how important arm strength is to play in the NFL, I think of Chad Pennington who had a very nice career. He played with accuracy and anticipation, which translates the best to the NFL game. Hoping this young man can do something similar or better. -

I like it...to me he has real potential based on Dennison's projected West Coast Offensive style. May turn to career back-up, which is fine too - because I have NO confidence in Jones. However, he might also turn into a gold nugget unearthed from the rough... -

No, in your description he was in the backseat while the passenger in the front seat had a gun and a bag of weed....the guy that didn't run in my story, still got 8 years in prison...moreover, while not being criminally responsible, does not absolve someone from responsibility of making the choice to be with a person who has the gun and marijuana. If weed was legal, the only issue is the gun - if there was no gun and it was just weed, then I think you have a better argument...but, you would have to be on this side of things to see how frequently associating with someone who is dangerous or potentially dangerous, i.e. possessing a loaded firearm illegally, truly can be and what sort of threat it poses to public safety. However, you are certainly entitled to your opinion, but there's the difference, I'm willing to say, we just disagree while you're speaking in absolutes. Let's just agree to disagree and know that none of us know all the facts. -
If Bills Don't Get A Franchise QB In 2018
BigBuff423 replied to BuffaloBaumer's topic in The Stadium Wall Archives
Dude....seriously, you're on a campaign....this is what the 4th time you've posted the same thing in various threads? C'mon...let it go. The franchise did not just devolve into oblivion because of a Mahomes pick that even the great Andy Reid has said is not ready. KC has a ready team to win without sacrificing the QB this year...let it go. -
Gilmore and Mahomes or White and a 2018 Pick?
BigBuff423 replied to PlayoffsPlease's topic in The Stadium Wall Archives
At one point, I may have agreed with you, but from what I've read over the last month or so leading up to the Draft, research / analytics seem to indicate the QBs that do the best over time are the ones that start immediately. So, since IMO I wasn't on any particular train for a QB this year, although I did like Mahomes and do like Peterman, I'm good with gaining the leverage necessary to either trade up or simply Draft the best QB for the Bills in 2018. -

I'm sorry, but I don't buy that....I've never admitted this openly but my life is about to change drastically so it won't really matter in about a month. But I work in a law enforcement "branch" in New York, and I can tell you I had one investigation where a vehicle was pulled over, the passenger bailed and ran, the driver stayed put and was arrested. Passenger was eventually caught, the car was searched and a loaded handgun was found under the passenger's seat. No one took responsibility as they both pointed to the other. Obviously, it couldn't belong to both of them, but one got 10 years in prison and one got 8 years in prison.....for the same gun....for the same crime. The law is not as clear cut as you think....furthermore, in NY at least the idea of constructive possession can be applied under a variety of circumstances, and if the gun was out in the open for the officer to observe, then Mr. Robinson knew the gun was in the car....to make my point one more time, I've had a number of narcotics investigations where it was known and proved a man and woman, usually boyfriend / girlfriend or husband / wife, were residing in a home together and the man was selling the drugs. The female never exited the house, and she was never recorded as making the transactions, but because it occurred out of the home, she was charged and convicted as well, because she knew it was occurring and was thought to be guilty, but not *as* guilty so she received Probation while he was sent to jail / prison, depending on the case.....it's happened quite a bit. I said all of that to say, you're making assumptions that are both factually and legally inaccurate. -

It was my first thought, this trade back was all about planning to go all in on a QB next year....texted a friend of mine and said the same thing a few minutes after the trade happened. I wouldn't be surprised to see Chad Kelly in the 6th, but I think McD know is TT time in B-lo this year and wants depth at other positions. -
Chiefs fans are laughing about the trade.
BigBuff423 replied to Klaista2k's topic in The Stadium Wall Archives
I guess I'm in the minority, but I don't really understand the Chiefs' fans or Bills fans with each trying to point to how much "better" one got of the other....this is a league of parity for the most part. So, the Chiefs got the QB they believe is their future - awesome - the Bills obviously did NOT believe in him as much or they would have chosen him and to be honest, the Chiefs are currently a more complete team and the Bills are essentially going through another change with a new HC and system. So, adding the extra 3rd this year - as others have said in a very deep Draft - getting a 1st next year, is pretty good....it's not great, like say getting a 2nd this year as well, but it's pretty good. Also, it seems to me McD and the staff are essentially saying while they're going to work hard at making playoffs this year and believe they "could" be good, they're basically laying the groundwork for the future, as in next year and two years from now. IMHO, the FA period indicated this already and this trade back to pick up two 1st Round picks in what is supposed to be a very good QB Draft tells me they're planning on going all in on a QB NEXT year...... -
And to be fair, in the Shoutbox he said Bills were trading down - then it came out they had a trade partner - and shortly after they were on the clock, trade went through. If anything, that sequence of events lends to credibility.
