Will DeAndre Hopkins be available this offseason?
NoSaint replied to NeverOutNick's topic in The Stadium Wall
real talk, not as enthused as I could be. I’ve been amongst the louder add a pass catcher or pass rusher voices in the off-season (or mid season) since year two of the Josh era. I think you have to push chips on the table to maximize your windows when the are fully open. that said, I have real mixed feelings about this season and the current roster construction. We will always have a chance with Josh and I can write a narrative that gets to hoisting the trophy but I think this may be our worst positioning in several years. We underachieved some opportunities, but they could overachieve this year and take it. Just not sure it’s our ideal spot to push chips in now in general. I also am not sure about Hopkins specifically. Older, and coming off PEDs is a major question mark. Also creates a roster management question with potentially losing Davis at end of 23, and not knowing Hopkins future contribution for 24. I think I’m resigned to hoping Davis gets healthy and balls out a bit, brown gets healthy at RT, nyheim and cook get dynamic and if we make a trade it’s either a younger WR for a long term Davis replacement (Denver added another, is jeudy actually on the market now) or an impactful defender on a short deal with no VM til mid season and everything but safety having question marks. -
And no, not talking McDermott with MLB looking a bit more platoon-ish officially, who do we think gets the mic in their helmet this year? Milano? One of the safeties? Or do you think an mlb separates from the pack?
-
I think it’s much more the “could he be a tackle but I’ll settle for guard player has more upside value because tackle not because versatility
-
because early in the draft some positions are more valuable. A good tackle is a rarer skill set. do you wonder why a safety slides more than a corner? guards don’t need as elite a skill set.
-
on the fence here. Think the 5th they try to put at a position they can roster. But struggling to match upside guys to need at 5. for RB I think it’s a PS guy added, and not sure if roschon is that at the moment. after that, agree it’s loading bodies to compete on the perimeter both ways

grain of salt on comments. if you have an offer that is too low then “I’m walking away” is one way to try to move the needle. we won’t know the difference from here -
you can only win the battle in front of you and he’s done it with a lot of consistency and at high levels. i do agree with sentiments that he’s a weird fit on paper and have concerns that hes maybe a guy they didn’t love at 27 but got excited to see slide without remembering why they didn’t love him at 27. See guys like epenesa, basham, ford possibly being examples of weighing a guy as “would we take him if the board jams us up” turning to “hey we talked about that guy much higher let’s snag him” ignoring the profile not really matching the need so much as the position matching a need walking in if kromer can make him into Carl nicks, it’s a home run though. Glass half full still. Yea it’s the 10 yards on the occasional pull, not the mauling a 350 lbs DT 70 times that would wear him down

The Battle of a lifetime: Klein, Spector, Dodson, Bernard, Williams

Yea I was curiously peeking at vets. Obviously none solid but a couple I’d be curious a status check on -

The cash is the real opportunity cost to weigh.Hopkins or that other free agent with the cash -

McD thinks the dime is twice as good as a nickel -

Klein is the leader in a platoon, someone else gets the headset in the helmet -
meh. If he were solidly above average starting caliber, he’d have a spot. Being versatile is extending a career not costing him reps.
-
you weren’t getting a viable day one MLB at 91 boss.
-
That OLB comment really meshes with what I was saying. Not an immediate Edmonds replacement
-
counter: I don’t expect them to think he’s a day 1 starter so it’s maybe not the same need based pick you think.
-
which scout was that?
-
meh, similar physical measurables don’t mean the same play. One could pick up the scheme wonderfully and grow in it while the other struggles. They both have question marks but we now have two swings at it instead of one and that’s better odds.
-
Good kid, really enjoyable team, fast and solid tackler, not an elite size or he would have been higher. you aren’t penciling pick 91 to be a day 1 guy but will compete for opportunities
-
no Hopkins?!?
-
I’m going pure memory but kromer worked wonders with massive day 3 pick Carl nicks in New Orleans. similar size. I cant claim to recall his 3 cone or arm length measurables coming out but huge guy with 1 year of premium competition. Saints were also a team with a big screen game. You don’t have to get 40 yards downfield to sell a block and disrupt a guy in pursuit. Especially if you have Davis, Knox and Kincaid in there for the second level.
-
and kromer coached well with Roman. I think there’s some questions, but they did a lot of work on this one so I imagine it wasn’t a knee jerk surprise they hadn’t thoroughly considered until the guy slipped to them
-
that’s quite the development, Einstein. Than you for sharing this news. We are lucky to have your smarts
-
what exactly have you looked for with him? it’s easier to just say you don’t know him but didn’t like last years line. he was good last stint, and was great with the saints. See his development of Carl nicks and jahri evans as guard projects that became all pros.
-
I think that’s the assumption
-
he’s also been an elite coach for a loooong time
