  1. I think more players than you want to admit would be tossing the towel in at 0-4 unless they expected to be real contenders and had some dumb luck to land winless
  2. We were pretty close to 50-50 whole Denver was 60-40 pass... so... We were 31st in pass percentage while Denver was dead on average
  3. The option was guaranteed for injury immediately though, which MIGHT be the theory on using the tag instead later if needed
  4. There's a big piece that I disagree with in there though and it's how in the hell does a GM create a strategy when they aren't making the call at head coach? I think much more cavalier than his approach at qb (where he brought in EJ, cardale, Tyrod, and I think wanted to take a swing this year too was his acceptance of not actually being in charge of the show. Once you pull picking the head coach (and by proxy schemes and philosophies of the organization) then he's not supposed to be a strategist but just a glorified scout that is stocking the shelves in someone else's pantry. I've always been very curious how that shook out and if it was something Whaley was good with or was fighting or....
  5. If we get in line with the league in attempts it wouldn't be shocking to see Sammy, clay and McCoy all up there if all are healthy
  6. Hopefully just like several other players that have gone through the same timeline/process this will be it
  7. There's obviously some price it makes sense at but if it's low first or something Day 2, kirbys right And since they decided not to do the option to give that team two years control they diminished sammys trade value And if they want to push for the playoffs and figure out Tyrod and they waited till next year to reap the rewards of the compensation then their strategies are all over the board and not meshing. If it's all gathering resources for a qb, cost he damned the best thing they could've done was trade Tyrod, right?
  8. Yea I don't get trading Sammy after the draft once you kept Tyrod-- it's the fast track to 6 wins which is our worst case scenario Especially since he will have to pass the physical of a lifetime on that foot for a team to take him. If it's healed we want the kid here long term.
  9. Well, regardless of if you think they will maximize the value, I think for the most part we can agree that there is generally a best process or set of best practices A mid rounder isn't going to set the world on fire most likely but it doesn't mean that the team should be neglecting the strategy behind the decisions here. Kind of like the discussion about all the scouts getting fired and then beane having to bring some back-- im not losing sleep but its more red flags about whether things will be getting better. If your getting the easy ones wrong, do you expect to get the hard ones right? I know we have a good bit of overlap in our thoughts about the state of the franchise right now and skepticism about whether we've actually turned the corner and started making consistently wise decisions or not. Time will tell and i certainly hope we start to see more momentum towards a smart and cohesive strategy now that we have a formalized front office.
  10. I'll likewise contribute that I'm not saying that you can never target a player -- but especially through a lot of those mid to lower tier signings guys get to be interchangeable and why not look at a guy that was cut as a standalone pickup instead of giving up a mid round pick for an interchangeable player. Heck, another nuance to the discussion -- if willing to give up the pick to sign them I would think maybe we should be more active trading for vets around the league in general. If we are potentially trading a 3rd for a guy like Holmes, hauschka or poyer are those really the best guys we could get for a similar valued pick, for instance? It's not even just a discussion of free agents available when you are qualifying or on the edge of qualifying for picks
  11. Yup. To pretend the pick is worthless is silly though. You can get a contributor there cheaply. Or at least essentially a free swing at one.
  12. It was a random example. Could insert all kinds of stuff there.
  13. A slight re-framing to your earliest point.... a 3-5 round pick doesn't move the needle on the trade much but if we trade both 1s and a 2 and an early pick next year-- suddenly an extra pick at the end of day 2 might get you some extra warm bodies that can actually contribute when you've spent several picks on one guy. That's still a nice thing to have in the back pocket. A high quality rookie running back at the end of the 3rd might help take some pressure off the qb you trade for and give a transition out of McCoy for instance. That's amusing I responded to the early post without reading the rest of the thread and as usual bump to the end and see you making the same point
  14. Because many of the vocal crowd mocking it don't understand the opportunities to work the system. In March there are a lot of very similar quality guys-- if two are close and you know you are letting a Gilmore walk you obviously get the ones that won't cost a high pick later --- bandit had a good example. Instead it feels like we a year out decide to ride it out (and not extend or trade) with the idea of tag or comp pick in our back pocket and then when the actual offseason comes we don't actually have the short term plan in line to match last year's mid range planning
  15. Ultimately it's the difference between just signing guys you like and actually having a cohesive (short, medium and long term) strategy. If we miss out on a 3rd due to a very interchangeable march signing that would be hard to replace or a costly cap hit if cut in august... it would be frustrating. For instance you would NEVER trade a 3 for poyer or hauschka -- but in final cuts that might actually end up being the debate because of the way we organized our offseason
  16. There is absolutely no reason this needs to be a 3 year project. There are certainly acceptable ways it could drag into that though.
  17. It's tough when your qb gets a $20m raise AND most of your defense gets big raises
  18. This was an interesting thread all around. Not so much due to the bills news but many directions folks went
  19. That was golden tate But Wilson has long been a lightning rod in that locker room it seems- which is interesting.
  20. Although in this example Sherman is probably the one portraying the culture that made the Seahawks successful. Whether we like it or not. I've always said that but if he's doing it at closed practices I have to wonder if there is even a line at this point or where he draws it
  21. Sad-- reports today that there were obvious track marks on his arm and someone on the tour thought he was high during the show. Guess we will see what the toxicology reports say
  22. When you have 3 head coaches in a 4 year run-- draft picks get wasted. Late picks are often very scheme specific guys that don't transition well and we've been a mixed bag on the top of the draft guys that should be around more often than not.
  23. Nope. Carpenter had 6 more attempts. So pretty similar in that regard. That's only one metric but for bills fans it's pretty apples to apples as a roughly comparable player they are familiar with for that single stat.
