I'm confused about this for Pittsburgh. You traded a 2nd for Metcalf and now take a 3rd for Pickens. Is this really going to be a big enough difference? Unless there's something else coming, I have a hard time understanding it.

That's not how this works. We wait until we see some WR who was drafted in the 4th or 5th has a good season then we come back and say "We told you so!". You can't honestly expect us to tell who before because then we will be wrong and look like idiots.

We've also forgotten that WR is one of the slower developing positions in the sport with some stellar rookies having a big impact. Guys like Nabers and Brian Thomas Jr having success has a trickle down effect that raises expectation for all WRs when for guys outside the first couple rounds.. you still probably have year 3 as the make or break year for them.

I think people overlook that this WR room has been under attack for 2 years now being told they suck. The GM coming out with this sort of defense of them likely goes a long way with those guys in the locker room. I personally think there is little chance this wasn't a planned and calculated thing from Beane.

Allen is also prone to trying to throw that route. It's why I was so apprehensive about Dorsey because it felt like he'd feed into Allen's competitiveness to make those big plays when it hasn't been his most effective route. Perhaps they are attempting to 'save him from himself', but I also suspect it's just part of the organizational philosophy that they want to control the ball and often trying these routes leads to short drives and giving the ball back to the other team.
