I think people overlook that this WR room has been under attack for 2 years now being told they suck. The GM coming out with this sort of defense of them likely goes a long way with those guys in the locker room. I personally think there is little chance this wasn't a planned and calculated thing from Beane.

Allen is also prone to trying to throw that route. It's why I was so apprehensive about Dorsey because it felt like he'd feed into Allen's competitiveness to make those big plays when it hasn't been his most effective route. Perhaps they are attempting to 'save him from himself', but I also suspect it's just part of the organizational philosophy that they want to control the ball and often trying these routes leads to short drives and giving the ball back to the other team.

You know NFL defenses do exactly that.. right? It will be something like the field-side corner (covering the lone receiver) to play man coverage on the #1 receiver (the outermost receiver on the weak side) while the boundary-side corner and nickel back to play zone on the three-receiver side, splitting the field into quarters. The strong safety plays a deep half zone on the three-receiver side and the free safety to play a deep quarter zone on the field side, providing help over the top of the man coverage.

I think they will play more man, but I think they want the flexibility to play both more than one or the other. Also, there's a lot more mixed coverage getting used these days where the defense is playing zone in one place and man in another.

I agree. You'd prefer a guy that could potentially catch a pass over a guy that has zero chance to do so. Also, having a guy in case you need Anderson to play because of an injury is helpful.
