A couple of weeks ago I was kicking around the idea that Apple might be in a position to buy Sunday Ticket to add to its Apple TV streaming service.
Apple is sitting on a mountain of cash. The company, however, tends to buy smaller companies as part of a search for talent and intellectual property.
I've also seen a report that suggests Comcast might be in a good position to bid for Sunday Ticket. It could bolster its Peacock streaming service as well as its cable TV business.
Another thought is that the NFL might divvy up broadcast rights to Sunday Ticket among several streaming and cable companies to keep anti-trust lawyers at bay.
In any event, 2022 looks like it's going to be a busy year for the NFL and the broadcast industry:
DirecTV’s exclusive deal to carry the NFL Sunday Ticket expires after the 2022 season;
The league’s current TV contracts with networks such as ESPN, Fox and CBS are also scheduled to end after the 2022 season.
So things could get interesting, but not soon enough for me.
