  1. I think we need a parade for homophobic idiots.
  2. There are definitely better and more polite ways to ask the question. But relentless futility demands a response. Unless the NFL has gotten to the point where actual fans are no longer part of the business model.
  3. I had stopped feeling emotion years ago but, once again, got lulled into a false sense that they had finally turned the corner and started to feel some emotion again --- until last week which was the worst loss I can remember since the Mularky years. What's really scary to me is that the last time the Bills were in the playoffs was before my son was born and I am presently wearing a pair of shoes I got from him when he outgrew them.
  4. Edit: as I posted this, several other folks posted something similar. There's more to being in the HOF than gaudy stats. I can't believe that everyone seems to have forgotten how fearless Reed was going over the middle and making catches where no one else would. His YAC was always way up there. He was, hands down, one of the gutsiest receivers with some of the best hands of anyone I've ever seen. When you then factor in his career stats, which were gaudy when he retired, I don't see how he isn't in the HOF already. The league --- and the HOF --- is full of flashy receivers. Reed wasn't flashy. But he was the absolute best at what he did --- catching balls over the middle in traffic. For example: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4RcIJ2rLMUQ
  5. Your avatar is the Helix nebula so I'm not surprised (and I tend to agree).
  6. Certainly more entertaining than the Jauron era and more consistent than the Chan era I suppose (though it's early).
  7. This is the same Peter King who had Trent Edwards as his offensive MVP through the first quarter of the 2008 season.
  8. Yeah, but the point is that it wasn't their schedule. (Whose schedule was it anyway?)
  9. Some are great, some are terrible. Love the Browns one. The Bills isn't too bad, same with the Seahawks. I kinda like the KC and Dallas ones (though I totally see the Christopher Walken thing). The Philly eagle looks like it's laughing.
  10. F*&%. This means Ahmad Bradshaw is back to being a back-up which screws up my fantasy team.
  11. Yep. I've increasingly come to see things that way. Random things happen to every team. At the end of the day, it's who's got more points on the board. The only way to get over the "randomness" part is to be so good that you blow everyone out of the water every week. So maybe the top 5 teams in any "ranking" are elite, a few are truly bad, and the rest are all about the same.
  12. Four and a half. They gave Dareus a half sack on one.
  13. I didn't hide behind my couch (I'm a 39 year old man), but the Pittsburgh game did come to mind as the play happened.
  14. Actually, about the only thing I really don't like about WNY is the hot, humid summers.
  15. Unfortunately, that's the problem with these big academic journals. I can't afford to read my own papers.
  16. And how many plays just like it have we suffered through in the past couple of decades? Like yesterday for example.
  17. Apparently I missed that discussion. Or maybe I had it back in 1990 and just blocked it out of my memory like everything else about that day.
  18. New study uses aerospace and mechanical engineering modeling to demonstrate the effect of the holder on field goal accuracy. When I was at UB I majored in aerospace and mechanical engineering and took a class with Bill Rae where we analyzed the motion of how football's moved through the air (we focused on thrown balls). This is the first time I've seen anyone look at field goals.
  19. One article said 1967 but didn't give any more details. Either way it's been a long time.
  20. It wasn't the offense that was worrisome, it was the D. They got run over and Gilmore and Searcy got injured.
  21. Unfortunately this does seem to be true. I love the game, but I think it's gotten a little out of hand. Personally, I think, counter-intuitively, that some of the current equipment actually exacerbates the problem.
  22. Bingo. It's the bear in the room. Concussions are a part of the game, unfortunately, given that the game is about hitting people. At some point there's going to have to be a realistic discussion about that. It's the same thing in boxing. You can make rules that outlaw hitting the head or whatever, but the fact remains that both boxing and football (not to mention hockey, when played the way the pros play it) are violent sports.
