Who do we want, who do we need as our next HC and, or GM?

Worth saying on Beane I suspect (though don't know) he leans more on McDermott now than he ever did when Schoen was here. I know there are people convinced McDermott ran every draft like a puppet master but that simply isn't true. He wasn't even the 2nd most important person in the room when the Beane - Schoen axis was together. Now he most likely is. Because from what I am told Beane is just like that, relationships are big for him. -
So is Landon Jackson done for the year?

I am starting to think the Bills would draft a guy in a wheelchair if his personal record showed he was an Eagle Scout growing up. -
honestly, this is scheme fit and being fragile vs being a guy. when you watch nfl shows featuring players ( i like to hear shady mcoy and akib talib talk. they have an urban street take on everything, but they worked really hard as nfl players, won championships, and are unfailingly honest) they talk about the guys, the dudes, the dogs. tremain isn't a stud football player, but he's a total stud athlete playing football. he was over paid by chicago, and is now earning all of his contract. if you see who we extended, its taron johnson, milano, bernard (horrible horrible contract, he's just a scheme fit barely above replacement nfl guy), knox. all four guys are paid, all four guys are not impact players at their position and are constantly hurt. Taron was good before, but he's a tiny cb playing SLB on like 30% of our snaps, he just can't last. at the next level, you have ed oliver and dq jones. when healthy both of those guys are more than worth their contracts, but they are never healthy. our latest other re signs were groot (people poop on him, but i'll take him at his contract all day every day, he's a trooper and a plus player), shakir (honestly over paid, he's a scheme fit guy and does things lots of other nfl guys can do, not a huge contract at least) and benford (was a stud for a couple years, but this is the third year in a row he's missed games where we needed him and lost with him out, and the prior two were in the fricking chip games). even tho i love him, you might throw hoyt in there too cuz he got so badly hurt. that's just too much money wrapped up in scheme fit not uber talented guys who most of all are always hurt. the upside is of course, we can let jones, johnson, milano, not bernard (too new contract) or shakir or benford (i think he can come back and be a stud again, i hope at least) go without any real impact. knox, bass, samuel can all go too and frankly we won't really notice them too much. i think we push dead cap forward as the cap grows since we still have some core guys, maybe keep bosa, keep aj if he's cheap again, and fill in holes in the draft and trade like we shoulda for a guy like waddle. some injury luck and like 3 position upgrades and we are a monster.

I am higher than most on Knox. I think he has a place on this team. We've seen a couple of guys take pay cuts over the years in Miller/Milano. I'd like to extend Knox at a much more fair value.

Pats will drop the Jets game. Divisional matchup on Thursday Night Football with a young QB is a recipe for sicko football. -
Do you think the Chiefs would beat the Patriots as a 7th seed?
mjt328 replied to Billsfed1's topic in The Stadium Wall
Everyone keeps forgetting about the Ravens. That team is going to storm back into the picture over the next few weeks. Yes, I believe the Chiefs have a great shot at going to the Super Bowl again... even as a Wild Card. The Colts, Patriots and Broncos are all paper tigers at the top of their divisions. Will finish with great records, and get eliminated early. No, I don't think we make the playoffs. -

That said, a team of Jon Gruden/Reggie Mckenzie or Matt Nagy/Mike Bradway would be the way I'd lean. Decision made! Gruden it is. Gas up the Cesna Terry! Gotta lighten the mood here a tad! -

That’s right that was Modrak (college) and Guy (pro). They were with Levy. I don’t remember if there was crossover. Either way, neither Levy nor Brandon made football decisions. Those other 2 did. Yeah, I’d suspect that they do. They have a nice foundation to work with. -

As I understand it Beane made the decisions and the selections (and still does) but he trusted Joe Schoen more than any human being on the planet when it came to talent evaluation. So it is reasonable to think that he had a big influence in all the draft picks while he was here. I have been told by people in the room that he sort of lacks that now. While he has good relationships with Gaine and Gray and I'm sure he "trusts" them. It isn't like the Beane - Schoen relationship. They were almost brother like. On the Brandon point though Whaley wasn't here when he was GM. Nix recruited Whaley. -

And that's why the Giants are keeping him, or at least that's what they are saying right now. -

Beane is totally responsible for the Pats having flipped the comparison of rosters in one offseason. Besides bringing in quality coordinators and a vastly superior HC, they added skill positions players that are producing at a high level. They are far better on the backend of their defense and their front seven is as good or better than ours. Josh and Cook are arguably the best tandem QB/RB in football. If we beat them in January that’s great but with their trajectory with the GM/HC advantage being huge, can we expect to keep our AFC hierarchy position much longer? Only distorted pompom carrying homers can avoid this reality. -

The Giants needs and the Bills needs are different. He was trying to build the Giants ground up. Honestly, he’s done the hard part. He got what appears to be a franchise QB, an elite weapon and a great pass rush. Those are the hardest things to do. In the Bills situation we would basically need him to draft well. He’s good at that. The Bills have had success drafting later in the draft but the roster lacks high end talent. If you had a choice of Joe Schoen running a draft or Brandon Beane, I’m taking Schoen 10 times out of 10. If you’re talking about building out a roster top to bottom, it’s Beane. -
I’d work to renegotiate Knox again, he’s a competent backup and if you can get a cap hit under 6mil he’s very much worth it. Id start with restructures on Allen and Oliver as well as cutting Samuel after 6/1. To me restructures should go from least likely to hurt us long term to most. For instance I have no intention of cutting or trading Allen so he’s just a piggy bank. Oliver is young enough to be useful going forward and we don’t run into void years in his mid to late 30’s. Palmer and Dawkins would be next on the list if need be.

Unlike the redhawk’s boy, the repellent Tim Kaine, Lurch actually put people over politics and party. Good for him and it would be nice if each side had more than one like him.

There have been 7 different head coaches to lead a team to a Super Bowl victory in the last two years. 4 of 7 had been head coaches for a different team prior to coming to the Super Bowl winning team. 6 of the 7 coached the offensive side of the ball before becoming a head coach. If we are going to move of from McDermott, I dont want a young coordinator who will take time to learn the nuances of gameday and roster management. That said, a team of Jon Gruden/Reggie Mckenzie or Matt Nagy/Mike Bradway would be the way I'd lean. If you are going to fire a coach that has been pretty damn good for 9 years it better be for a guy who can have you in the Super Bowl the very next year. McDermott would have a job in two seconds if they fired him. -

I've been gradually moving in this direction for years. In many ways, football can be an addiction. You deserve a lot of credit for being able to properly put it into the backseat of your life. A few years ago, my wife pointed out that my mood with the rest of the family was being negatively impacted based on how the Bills played that week. Since that point, I've learned that if games aren't going well... I can just turn them off and do something else. I don't need to plan my Sunday around it. It's honestly been a work in progress, but I have gotten much better. Last year I skipped watching the Super Bowl, and totally ignored anything related to football until around free agency. Of course a championship would still mean a lot to me. But I've pretty much accepted the fact that it probably won't happen. And if it doesn't, I'm blessed in lots of other ways. Once Josh Allen's career is over, my plan is to call it quits on the sport altogether. Whether we ultimately reach the promised land or not. As someone who loyally supported and watched every game during the 17-year drought, I've got zero interest in going through that again. -

Kirby Jackson replied to jaybeezee's topic in The Stadium Wall
Likely both. Beane ultimately had the final decision but Schoen was the guy that basically led scouting. He likely played a leading role in selecting Josh (as he just did with Dart). At least that’s how I understand the relationship. Perhaps @GunnerBill or someone more familiar can correct me if I’m wrong. That’s not all that uncommon. An extreme example is when Russ Brandon was the “GM.” He didn’t make any football decisions. That I know for a fact. He ultimately signed off on everything as the de facto owner but he wasn’t evaluating talent and overruling the guys in place (Modrak and Whaley if memory serves). -

TheFunPolice replied to Billsfed1's topic in The Stadium Wall
Ravens have some tough games coming up, including 2 Burrow Bengals games, Patriots, Packers, and Steelers twice if you want it (Pittsburgh always plays them tough even when they're bad) Every one of those teams will be playing all out to win because they need the W's for division races, seeding, etc. It's no guarantee that the Ravens suddenly became inevitable If they are some juggernaut and beat all those AFC teams then it just helps us -

1) All these guys have giant egos that clash. They would be in a different business if they didn't. 2) Pegula has already cleaned house with the Sabres multiple times. Each time, they have to start a new rebuild from scratch. And in hockey where teams draft literal children, that takes years. Now that they need to do it again, he's loath to pull the trigger. But he has to do it.
