You have to weed and dust them regularly. Treat them right with fertilizer and soil. If too wet they rot. If too dry no plant. They take a lot of nutrients, need almost perfect environmental conditions, and if grown right yourself can be huge. The problem, if I recall, is that if you harvest them too late they lose taste. If too early they taste raw. I do not like them, though, so I have little to no experience. I have grown a lot of things, those are not one. I do great with tomatoes, peppers, beans, squash, cucumber and lettuce. I wish I ate more vegetables, specifically squash. Winter squash is different, too. Pumpkin, too. You can do a ton with it. Ever heard of mince meat? It's a way of preserving meat using scraps, a good way to do that is with pecans and pumpkin with molasses. I know a lot about food. You plant those in the fall and they come up in the Spring. You're in O-H I-O so you are a bit different there... but you do most of your planting in the fall and Spring. I can give you some great tips, I will post some here, if you want more PM your email... Look in to raised beds. They are SOOOO much easier to deal with. Strawberries are fun - had to just get that out of the way. A simple googling of raised beds can show you some great ideas. You can make them complex, with self watering devices and even built in auto-aerating tubes. I seem to recall you liked fish? Or maybe just mentioned it - but taking any fish left overs and putting them where you plan on putting a tomato plant can pay off big time. The non-cooked fish are what I mean, if you fish and clean them yourself, that is...
