Why are we so late to adjust defensively?

What the complainers fail to realize is if we came out aggressive against the Bengals, Burrow and their wide receivers would have torched us. Yes, they sort of torched us anyway but in smaller chunks. Defense is always at a disadvantage in slippery conditions. What changed in the second half is it stopped snowing as hard. Hence, they got aggressive.

Was at the game with the family which was incredible!

 

There was one particular series where I think Mcd called a timeout and I’m telling  there was a lot of confusion in the defensive backfield on who had who. Like Literally no one would have been covering Chase. 
 

Benford seemed to shadow Chase a bit and then Bengals would shift another receiver to that side, Benford shifted over and took that Wr-  Losivas  maybe leaving Lewis on Chase. 
 

Really interesting to see these plays unfold from the Angle we were at.

It was pick your poison, blitz & get torched or don't & die slow. They tried to situationally blitz to make a play. It worked to get a sack & pick 6. Good players make good coaches (see Texans front 4). McD is doing the best w/ what he has.

I agree with the poster. Borrow spent the entire 1st half completly comfortable in the pocket, even Mitch Trubisky can find an open receiver.

As you say, they torched us.  Sitting there in zone giving cushions when we had SEVEN third down opportunities to get a stop in the first half was absolutely maddening.  Many of those were third and 5 or more - something Benford mentioned post-game.  Have to take some shots on third and long.  ESPECIALLY in slippery conditions, because those in the soft zone can't drive on the ball as fast.  If we got off the field on a couple of those we might not have needed all the heroics in the second half.  And IMHO, matching Benford on Chase the whole day was a mistake.  Tee Higgins was too big and physical for Tre and Hairston - should have put Hairston on Chase and given him help.  Great win, but I IMHO D scheme  in the first half made it harder than it had to be.

Give Joe Burrow some credit. He made some amazing throws when we had receivers covered. You can't not defend a perfectly placed pass. 

 

As for playing soft, we could have had a couple of 3rd down stops if we made a tackle. Not tackling isn't a scheme issue.

Two things:

Burrow was nearly perfect on his throws, even when receivers were covered. And we missed tackles on some third downs.

Tackling could have been better at times, but we did play way too soft in the first half.  Burrow is a great talent, you have to get him off his spot and affect his throws, at least in third and long.  We didn't in the first half.

It’s mostly because Babich never has a plan “B” ready to go, even though the same scenario plays out over and over, soft zone gets torched / run defense gets torched, happens in most games, Babich waits until half time to make adjustments, with half the game gone, it makes it a nail biting affair to get back on top, and that doesn’t always happen, gotta come up with a better way to implement adjustments,  implementing speedy adjustments needs to be a priority,
