Keon WTF?

They managed to bungle the most important draft since Josh. It was, arguably, the greatest WR draft in history. You just dealt your number 1 and had a glaring void at the top of the depth chart. You HAD to get it right. You could have went up aggressively for one of the big 3. You could have went up some for BTJ. You could have picked where you did or around where you did and taken: Worthy, Pearsall, Coleman, Legette, Polk, AD Mitchell or McConkey (or even some other guys).

 

No matter what though, you HAD to be right. The Bills traded down TWICE and took Keon. They clearly weren’t convicted on any of the guys or they would have pulled the trigger. They took a guy with extreme limitations that would be overcoming math with his separation rates in college. It was a foolish pick even if it worked. The Bills HAD to pick a guy that would be good no matter what (Worthy or McConkey). They might not reach great but the Bills didn’t have the luxury to gamble. They needed a guy to be a contributor immediately. The IDEA of Keon was as flawed as the player.

We agree.  I stated, that they put far too much emphasis on character.  The (albeit very funny) joke, IMO, sealed it for them.  Then probably back filled themselves from there to liking him more.

 

He's a hindrance to the offense and I would largely get him off the field.  Maybe bring him in on rushing plays, as I think he's a good blocker.

What a complete joke. The guy is 6-foot-4, 215 pounds and somehow manages to get boxed out of bounds by cornerbacks four inches and 25 pounds lighter than him. 

He offers NOTHING to this team. He’s a jackass. He gets benched for being one. He doesn’t separate. He doesn’t beat defenders in one-on-one opportunities.

I just never understood that pick. Nothing about it felt right. Ladd seemed like the “process” guy. I don’t even want to hear detractors say “but Shakir”, as if having another player who can actually run routes and get separation would be a bad problem to have. 
 

I’ve said it numerous times, Brandon Beane’s resume is essentially Josh Allen. That trade back was just as bad as standing pat and letting the Chiefs leapfrog him for McDuffie, and then settling for Elam instead. I’m not even sure how Bills fans can get excited for drafts anymore with his boom/bust ratio. Josh & Cook aside, there’s no boom with his players it’s either serviceable or bust.

For me, Keon is out of sight and out of mind for me and has been for awhile.  I don't even bother to think about him anymore because it's pointless.

 

Here's a guy who, coming out of college, there were advanced statistics showing that he was one of the worst WRs at getting separation.  Additionally, there were also advanced statistics showing that he was mediocre to bad at contested catches.

 

So, Keon can't separate AND he can't reliably make contested catches.  Against college competition.  What chance did this kid really have against pros?

 

Keon will be extinct soon.  He's like a monkey who both doesn't know how to crack nuts AND doesn't know how to find fruits, vegetables, and insects.  You can't survive in the NFL or the tropics that way.

It didn’t make any sense. Josh took the biggest leap and had the best rapport with smaller, speedy guys (John Brown) or quick space finders (Beasley). He did WORSE when we tried to give him Kelvin Benjamin.

3 receptions, 6 targets, 11 yards.  That’s our first-ish round pick in his second season with JA throwing to him.  Josh had a miserable game but I don’t see Keon doing much to help him.

It's sad how bad the Bills are at scouting WR talent. Of all the talented alpha WRs that go in the first and second rounds, the Bills end up with Keon Coleman. This guy is not it.

Keon is absolutely trending toward bust category and would rather have Worthy or McConkey, but that draft class of WRs is pretty disappointing overall so far.  Definitely not living up to the hype as one of the greatest WR draft classes of all time.

That would probably help,  but that takes one of Shakir or Kincaid off the field and they are better than he is.

Also, when you run 4 and 5 wide, there is plenty of room to have them all on the field at the same time...

 

Kincaid is also effective lined up tight to the line...

 

Plenty of snaps to be gotten in the slot for all 3 guys...

Ultimately, this is the problem with Brandon Beane.

He's not a great scout, and so he doesn't have any real conviction on players.  

 

From all his post-draft news conferences, you can tell that he pretty much just identifies a position of need, puts a bunch of players into a general tier, and then hopes he gets one of those guys.  Doesn't really matter who.  At the end of the day, his goal is to fill-out a roster.  

 

Before that draft, Kansas City boldly identified which WR they felt would best fit the team.  Then they aggressively traded up to make sure they got Xavier Worthy specifically.  There was nothing special about Keon Coleman to us.  Beane clearly would have been just as happy with 3-4 other guys at that spot.  He was drafting a position instead of a player, and crossing his fingers that player would be good.

 

The Chiefs did the same thing when they specifically targeted Patrick Mahomes and Trent McDuffie.  We traded down in 2017 because we had no convictions about the QB class (although that was before Beane), and then just sat around in 2022 waiting for one of the cornerbacks to fall to us.  It ended up being Kaiir Elam, who is clearly a huge bust now.
