A fun postscript to the miserable Bills weekend.

We come up to go to one game a year.  Multiple times when my son has flown back over the years an ex Bill has been on his flight and he always ends up engaging with them.  Today Taiwan Jones was on his flight.  My son actually has his autograph on a hat from TC a while back.  My son gets to talking to him and Taiwan shows him the scar from when he got hit when his helmet came off 😛

(this pic is from shortly after it happened)

Really concerning that Benford keeps ending up on the bad side of these grades.

Say what you want about PFF, but it matches some breakdowns of his play.

Bernard is what he is.  He’s not a top tier linebacker but has a knack for making big plays.  I can live with this from him.

Benford has to be better for the money we’ve given him.

Something interesting I've heard non stop is that if Benford didn't get hurt last year in the AFCC game, we would have won.  Did anybody watch the few plays he was in before the injury?  The Chiefs were challenging him and winning almost every play.

Benford is not the guy you put on the number 1 receiver, he's a system corner like Tre White and Josh Norman.

Very sloppy. Unprepared, and we got punked. NTM Vrabel's profanity laced rant on Instagram totally disrespecting the City of Buffalo, the franchise, and players. Put it up on the board and let it fuel your preparation.

I still can't agree with a blanket assessment that Maye outplayed Allen.  The number of times Maye had a clean pocket versus Allen is far greater than you may realize, and I rewatched the game early this morning.  The Pats got what I would call consistent pressure on Allen last night. The fact that Allen only got sacked once is a product of his abilities on the field.  I'd go as far as to say it looked like Allen was playing against a varsity defense while Maye was playing against the JV defense.  I am disheartened by our D, and it's rather vanilla schemes that seem far too easy to exploit, but maybe our talent on that side of the field is just average.

Did Allen get a bit jumpy?  Yes, but he started ranging around after feeling quite a bit of pressure due to the defensive scheming by Vrabel's staff.  Notably, the Pats DL outplayed the Bills OL and shut down the run completely - often running complex blitzing schemes.  They put the game on Allen's shoulders, which is likely going to be a theme going forward if opponents can pull it off.  I'll put my opinion in simple terms - if Maye had faced the Pats defense last night he would have looked below average.

A lot of credit to Vrabel's staff - he outclassed McDermott and crew in this one.

“They put the game on Allen’s shoulders”

Tentatively saying this, but don’t we mock the Ravens when defenses lock down Henry and force Jackson to throw?

Don't include the guy hiding behind the shoe shine stand at the bus station

In any regard, it's tough to beat the Patriots and the Refs...whistle swallowing seems to be a thing against the Bills.

Damn shame about them Chiefs. Lost another game and all. 2 - 3.

Golly.

Time for all the excuses? How the refs did it all? It ain't the refs, it's that the Chiefs aren't as good as they used to be. And it wasn't the refs for the Bills either. They had an awful game.

Nah.

Benford's a sensational player.

But that's not the way he's playing right now. I hope he's recovering from some minor injury or something because he's showing serious regression.

Pretty flawed comparison when the Refs gifted the Chiefs with 14 points to keep it competitive.

No, no, you're missing the narrative.

What it is, the NFL hates the Bills and loves the Chiefs. So, what you're saying there doesn't fit the narrative and is therefore impossible.

Bad things happen. Including bad calls. To everyone.

The best teams just outplay the other team and don't even let it get close. This Chiefs team is not the same one we've seen.

What you’ve said is true, but I don’t think it really negates the idea that bias from the referees has a significant impact on football games.

Im too lazy to link it right now, but I saw a thesis paper earlier this year that showed how the Chiefs had statistically significant help from the referees during the regular season over Mahomes career.

Tonight should have been a blowout, and it was artificially kept close by the referees.

It’s wild to handwave it all away when the Bills consistently perform worse and have way more penalties called on them when Hochuli is the referee.

Not saying it’s the only reason they lost, the passing defense was atrocious, but to pretend that those calls Sunday night were spread between the teams evenly and with the same impact is just silly.

I washed this game off.  Everyone loses a few games.  Eagles, Chiefs, Lions, Ravens, Packers, Bills, etc..  No one is perfect.  The guys won’t rack up penalties and turn it over like that on the same night for a while.

The Bills deserved to lose, Hochuli or not. However, one ref call could have easily resulted in a different result.  If a penalty is called on the third down incompletion to Shakir, the Bills likely win that game.

Bills seems to have a voo doo hex on them in Week 5 over the last few years.

Lotta ball left and no one in the AFC has emerged as a real threat just yet.
