It was a fake story by Wesley Steinberg who specializes parody NFL stories after Benjamin was cut. Everybody retweeted anyways without bothering to check so it is pretty much an established "fact" now.

Here is the AI summary of why Benjamin was actually cut:

Date: The release occurred on Wednesday, July 28, 2021.

Reason: The core of the issue was a disagreement over weight.

Incident: Benjamin had a visible discussion with Judge and Gettleman before walking off the field during the first training camp practice.

Weight Discrepancy: Benjamin was informed he needed to cut down to 251 pounds but reportedly arrived at camp weighing 268 pounds, despite passing the conditioning test.

Kelvin Benjamin, former wide receiver for the Carolina Panthers, was arrested on Tuesday after he was caught eating food off of other diner's plates at a Golden Corral restaurant in Charlotte, North Carolina.

Am I the only one who thinks this legend of the game crap needs to stop?

I wish they would let the honorees change up what they say to the crowd, but other than that I’m a fan.  No different than, for example, the Vikings getting an ex-player or other Minnesota legend to blow the “SKOL” horn at the start of every game.

Already disliked the guy as he appeared to be laziest player I ever watched. That moment he became my least favorite bill all time

I agree here from a dude with the measurables needed to the abject laziness and self absorption he may have done less with the talent he had than anyone I can remember playing for us.... Maybe McGahee... who I didnt like either...

Is this real?  The only thing I can find on google is a reddit story that claims this yet there is no link to the New York Times article that they supposedly Instead there are boken links to the Washington Post and USA articles.  I am going to guess it is made up.

In any case, the Gentleman story was entirely made up since it was broken by Wesley Steinberg which clearly a parody account.

I'm sure they can say whatever they want. But if you want to get a Bills crowd hyped up, what are going to say?

Kelvin Benjamin, former wide receiver for the Carolina Panthers, was arrested on Tuesday after he was caught eating food off of other diner's plates at a Golden Corral restaurant in Charlotte, North Carolina.

Benjamin, who is 6'5" and weighs 305 pounds, was reportedly sweating profusely when he entered the restaurant and was immediately denied service by the hostess.

"We were all full and there was a wait, so I told him he would have to come back another time," the hostess, who wished to remain anonymous, said.

"He got really mad and started yelling at me. I told him to leave and he did, but then he came back in and started taking food off of other people's plates."

Several diners attempted to stop Benjamin, but he was apparently too strong for them.

"He just kept eating and saying, 'I'm starving, I'm starving,'" one witness said.

"It was like he didn't even care that he was getting arrested."

Benjamin was eventually subdued by police and was taken into custody. He has been charged with trespassing and theft of services.

It is unclear why Benjamin was so hungry, but his sweatiness may have been a factor.

"He was just drenched, like he had run a marathon," the witness said.

"I don't know if he was sick or what, but he was really sweaty."

Benjamin has a history of problems with food. In 2016, he was criticized for being overweight and out of shape.

And in 2017, he was caught on camera eating ribs on the sidelines of a Panthers game.

This is not the first time a professional athlete has been arrested for stealing food. In 2015, former NBA player Charlie Villanueva was arrested for stealing a slice of pizza from a New York City restaurant.

Eating food off of other people's plates is considered a serious offense in the United States, and Benjamin could face up to 10 years in prison if convicted.

This is just the rest of what is on Reddit. Is there a link to the original story?

AI says he has not been arrested as a adult.  I am going to guess this story is also fake.

That was on Reddit.  I’ve read NY Post Newspapers with articles about Kelvin stealing food.  They were having a field day lambasting Fat and Lazy WR.

”Too many trips to cafeteria” was a common complaint

Just because it is on Reddit doesn't mean it is true.   If this was a true story you would find it from multiple outlets -- not one Reddit story and a YouTube video.

Based on that last sentence in the story "Eating food off of other people's plates is considered a serious offense in the United States, and Benjamin could face up to 10 years in prison if convicted."  I am pretty confident it is fake.
