Ironically, a lot of people thought they gave up their three first round picks for Mac Jones.  Instead they took Trey Lance.

Why wouldn't Mac Jones be a decent backup QB? I wouldn't want him because he is a douche, but he is exactly the type of QB who could come in and operate an offense for a couple of games if your QB is injured.

He has won games in this league and started almost 50 games total. He is a good backup. He even went to the Pro Bowl once.

Zach Wilson is QB2 behind injury-prone Tua in Miami.

I think he's about equal to Mitch TBH

Absolutely. I think people are biased when if comes to backup QBs because they remember them as starters. Well yes, they aren't good starters. That's why they are backups.

Zach Wilson is a good backup as well. All the physical tools you could want. Starting experience. What's not to like?

Pro Bowl alternates should not count.  Snoop Huntley is a one time pro bowler.

I always thought the 49ers were a well run organization. WTF are they doing with Mac Jones as their backup?  😂

I think Mac is at least as good as Trubisky. I might prefer him tbh.

Ummmm….no.

Mitch has averaged 170 yards per start since 2022 and has 4 TD's and 5 INT's. He's started 7 games in that time.

Jones has 203 yards per start since 2022 and has 30 TD's and 31 INT's. He's started 32 games in that time.

I'm not sure which Mitch you think you're getting if he is ever called upon, but he's no longer the mostly serviceable younger guy in Chicago. He's older, he hasn't played much, and his athletic skills are declining. At least Jones is younger and still learning and likely just as athletic as the older Mitch at this point. These guys are back ups for a reason. But ya, neither is exactly separating themselves as far as ability.

I'd rather have Zach Wilson as our back-up than Trubisky. He's underrated. It's not his fault that he was drafted by the Jets.

If he was a good backup he'd be on an NFL roster.  Not a practice squad.

Was a good backup. But he only worked for the Ravens.

He went 3-6 with the Ravens with an 8-7 TD to INT ratio and a QB rating in the upper 70's.  That's not a good backup.

Mac jones is a borderline starter in the league. GM’s would likely have him in the top 5 of backups. The Bills would be happy to have him.

Yeah, Mac isnt a great player (too limited IMO) but he can run most offenses and be efficient at times. I bet he does well with San Fran

I'm not sure what the mystery is.  The 49ers are being Spock-like in their logic.  Their goal is to win a SB, but their chances of hoisting a trophy is roughly nil if Purdy goes down.  Advanced analytics tells them their best strategy at that point is to lose a bunch of games, earn a good draft position, and retool for next year.
